is there a bari, or, any other sax player, that has Geru's scale, tone, and inventiveness today? Please advise if you know... I would really love to hear it.
@tenorote George Young, Gary Meek, Joe Lovano, Sonny Rollins.... I mean c'mon... we have lot's of great sax players with us. You didn't restrict your question to baritone.
Of course, Gerry is wonderful and I admire him but to say he was better than Carney is to say nothing. " Живущий несравним."Each is in his own. Listen to Harry's solo in: Duke Ellington-Lotus Blossom(live version&trio)! Btw, Duke loved Harry greatly. And, please, don,t mix Music and Race. Just enjoy it.. Sorry...
A little trivia about this video. Does anyone know why Dawson is pulling up his pant leg at :35 ? I'll give you a hint...this was in the early 1970's. The 1st right answer I bet is a drummer that played in the 70's.
Porque en los 70 se usaban los pantalones MUY anchos y se trababan con el pedal del bombo. No es necesario ser baterista para saber esto, yo soy saxofonista.

I agree Waffles... Black people are just better at stuff. But this Jerry Mulligan and Pepper Adams, Nick brignola were still as good as Sahib Shihab and Harry Carney.. harry Carney is still my favorite though. It's black music though... What do white people expect?
Gerry Mulligan didn't like pianists. But his collaboration with Dave Brubeck seems effortless and without any stress. The rhythm section with Jack Six and Alan Dawson is impeccable. Thanks for posting this musical gem.
Maybe Mulligan and Brubeck clicked so well because Brubeck is actually a very percussive pianist who plays with a lot of drive, and perhaps that's what Mulligan missed in most pianists. That's my theory. Whatever the case, this is a great Brubeck lineup as well. I have the 1971 Newport album (jazz festival) and their version of Take Five on that album is astonishing.
You found another classic 70-'s Brubeck video! That's great stuff. This is on the audio CD "The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Gerry Mulligan at the Berlin Philharmonic" from 1970.
I am listening to the double CD set "Live At The Berlin Philharmonie" right now and the version on this double cd set is not the same as the one in this video.

What's the use of comparing absolutely different musicians? They are both wonderful in their own.

I guess the bassdrum beater got lost in his endless trousers...
Anyway I'm far too young to have played in the 70ies but this still happens from time to time :)

Sorry, I was wrong, this version is on that CD! However, it starts (or picks up) almost 11 minutes into the audio cd track of the same name!
