I think she did fine but only in America's standard. I'm not filipino but I know that the singers there can sing these type of songs with much more ease and better transition. So in their standards, I doubt it was a performance they will drool over.

Ashanti was beyond amazing! I loved her performance because she sounds so beautiful and put so much into honoring one of her musical inspirations in a great way.
Flat in several places and screaming to reach notes. A mess, really. I credit David Foster for soldiering on at the piano when he must have been wondering what he had gotten himself into. And the thing is that if she attempted a more easy song, one more suited to her range and skills, she would have sounded quite good I think. Why doesn't Foster forget trying to make another Whitney Houston and just write songs for Ashanti and her voice.

Much better than the off performance in Malaysia. Ashanti can actually sing better than most R&B artists out there. Much better than Rihanna, that's for sure.

@Promo4Ashanti Like I said, I dunno.. I was born in a world where child singers that age would belt hit Bb5 and B5 to A6 with ease. I know, crazy. full chest voice and all dat. Just nuts. They don't make it big coz the industry usually picks looks over skillz. All I can say is that Ashanti was truly born to saang. Would she have become a beast like Yolanda or Deb Cox? I dunno.. but I am lookin' forward to her music now that she's 30 and in her prime.

Better than KL but still not happening. In my opinion, if one does not have a melodious voice (a full body voice) one should not touch this song cause the high notes will sound like screams. This was not pleasant for my ears. It wasn't smooth. She is great for R&B - not ballads. What is next DF "All By Myself" ? smh

@Promo4Ashanti @mv0014 yes, Charice and Ashanti are great in their own ways. I have to give props to Ashanti for this recent performance of BGM Medley. Much better than the off performance in Malaysia. Ashanti can actually sing better than most R&B artists out there. Much better than Rihanna, that's for sure.

@Promo4Ashanti well, only within the R&B genre, in my opinion. I still think her turn to standard ballads (i.e. Whitney Houston, Celine Dion type songs) is way out of left field and is not her cup of tea. It just doesn't suit her vocals. It was a good attempt to see her bang out Whitney, but my applause was more in relief that she made it thru the song. I much rather hear Ashanti sing her R&B stylings, where she is most at home and at her best.

All Ashanti has to do is work on her higher register tone and she'll be good, her falsettos are great! i seen ashanti live in person 6 times! this is a recording mind you! talk when shes on tv or you went to an concert, she's a great artist all around! this to be honest i think she was a bit nervous with the one in KL, ashanti has a full voice she just does not have a full voice the tone as whitney! and thats what your comparing her to

@Promo4Ashanti sure, Ashanti can sing any song she wants, but I think it will always have to be suited to her voice (i.e. re-arranged for her tone, range, etc). She has her strengths and weaknesses, so better to stick to her strengths, right? Big power ballads will not do her justice. If she was to go toe-to-toe with a Yolanda Adams, Deborah Cox, Kelly Price, or Jennifer Hudson, she wouldn't fare well. Just stick to her bread-and-butter, which is R&B stylings...

@TheStreetcred im feel as though your belittling r&b, R&b singers can blow just as well as the people you are naming! yes of course ashanti can go toe- to- toe with them but is that what their art is about? competing and saying who's better or not? they are all great in there ways on a scale 1 to 10 ciara being 1 and janet being 5 and whitney being 10 ashanti is about a 7 or 8 she just needs to perfect her tone more and she would be great...not no whitney but she would be great for her sound

@Promo4Ashanti Nah, I am a Hip-hop/R&B fan. But I also know and respect the adult contemporary genre, wherein the kind of songs and the type of voice required is different from R&B. Ashanti is from R&B roots, am I right? That's her thang. Deborah Cox may go try venturing into hip/hip R&B, but she won't fare well--just as Ashanti may dip her feet in some big time power ballads, but it won't really suit her.

@TheStreetcred i dont think that opinion is quite accurate lol. if she can hold her own with powerful voices from stage plays(wicked and the wiz) then her voice can stand with the likes of the names you listed. this video is proof that she can handle whitney songs. david himself said it was amazing. the smile on his face said it. i dont understand why people tend to think she is a weak singer or has to struggle to sing these songs.

@igetthatgoodjugg I've heard Ashanti's rendition of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' -- they did a great job arranging it to suit her vocal style, so it worked. But was it 'standard'? No. That's all I'm sayin' -- Ashanti can sing whatever song she wants, but it has to suit her voice (re-arranged for her tone, her range, etc.).

@igetthatgoodjugg yea, she did fine in an ensemble. but to say Ashanti can sing like Lea Michele would be 'foolish', pardon the pun. It's just different styles, and Ashanti (and the music arrangers) did their best to assimilate.. even the Wizard of Oz was an "urbanized" version of the original--which suited Ashanti's style just fine.

@igetthatgoodjugg I agree with u dat Ashanti is "underrated" as a vocalist. Considering this was a David Foster concert and she survived a Whitney standard, I give her mad props.. as in, maad props. But to go toe-to-toe with Deb Cox or Yolanda, I would say Ashanti just needs to stay true to her sound and she'll be just fine.. She's got her unique sound and style.
