What a great moment in history.I was nine when this happened.I remember how shocked i was when Pope John1 passed away after serving for only over 30 days.I got up in the morning and my older brother turned on the Today Show and there his body was laying out in white.
One of my favorite moments in this video is at about 1:28 when, as soon as Cardinal Felici announces (in Latin) Karol Wojtyla's first name ("Carolum"), before he even announces the surname, you can hear Father O'Keefe blurt out in a very loud whisper to Peter Jennings, "Pole! Wojtyla! Polish!" What a moment. Thank you very much for posting this.
@Medleyitis To me it sounds like he says "Oh,Wojtyla!" kind of in suprise. Like, they decided to pick him. Because as he says he was aware they had him in mind but he might not have thought they would go that route. No one really did. But,you maybe right. It was a great moment, nevertheless. Thanks,bobcnn1
I was born right when the last pope died. So this was the only pope I had really known since Benedict. I loved John Paul II. He was so loving. I am proud to be Catholic. :)
@irvindale We don`t know, but... just imagine what these day meant for Polish people in our Country of atheistic communism and Soviet domination! I still miss him... ;(

Love how everyone was instantly taken by him. He was a star the second he stepped onto the balcony, with that big, friendly smile on his face.

The man who ruled the Catholic church during the years of the scandalous cover up of clerical sex abuse!

Who would have dreamed what this man would do? One man, and he ended communism in Europe. Saint indeed.

Did someone in the crowd call out "Wojtyla!" at 0:52, just before the cardinal began to speak?

It took me a while to realize that was a young Peter Jennings, probably my favorite newsman of all time.
