David Coverdale auditioned for Deep Purple after they put an ''Ad'' in a Music Paper ( coulda been Melody Maker ) asking for a singer to replace Ian Gillan. Purple wanted a cassette tape ( no downloads back then matey ) and a photograph. Coverdale sent them the cassette tape which of course showcased his phenominal voice. And he displayed his great sense of humour because the photo was of himself as a schoolboy in his school uniform. Can you imagine DP trying to match up the voice with the photo
