God this is even more awful now than it was in 1988. Atrocious acting, scripting and direction, historical fact treated gingerly to say the least, and a pompous voiceover trying to tell us that this was a mystery solved. And that's without mentioning how Wickes actually pinched dialogue from previous series he'd directed, the Godawful American mini-series requirement of a fairy tale love element and the most glamorous and fey East End Victorian prostitutes imaginable.
@Marillionboy you've got to be kidding me ... How is this bad acting ? This was the best version (even though it's a simple tv film). I'm a film-buff and I do think this was pretty good ! 7,5/10 ;)
@frafroggy I agree largely with what the above commentator says on historical fact and mystery solved because from a historical point of view it is atrocious. However I see nothing wrong with the acting and the musical score is stupendous. It is a pity that they could not have done something more historically accurate given the effort made in other areas although showing Jack the Ripper to be some working class east end maniac is a lot less glamourous than someone associated with royalty.
yes!!!!!!! this clip has the infamous scene near the end of the movie with yelling, drool, and wired dialogue and the end of this scene you can see Michael Cain smirk as if to say how the hell did i get into this stupid movie it's one of the best things ever!! the scene starts at 5:10 into the video clip!!!!!!!!
the jack the ripper case wasnt just about any one individual, not abberline or gull. it was about whitechapel. that clash of upper class and bottom class that only comes about through prostitution. It was about the dawn of a new century. It was about our own hesitation to question those more educated and powerful than us.It was about five innocent women who died in great pain with only a madman and his lackey for company.
@swastikausa i agree besides evidence was found that it wasn't hima lone anyway. he was employed.
and for this.... i am confused yet very curious about the whole situation. i find teh hole thing so fasinating, and i thank god every day i am not a prostitute! lol
how come there is no part 2!!! tsk3 it sucks!!!!

@swastikausa Only it did not happen as shown in this film. This is fiction. All of the victims died instantly too.
