I'm afraid this video is misleading at best. It doesn't actually demonstrate anything helpful, like how to latch a baby. Latch is the most critical aspect of breastfeeding, and is a learned rather than innate behaviour.
Breastfeeding is a learning experience and can take some time to master: but this video makes it sound a lot harder than it is.
This should not be your only educational source, you should get information from your doctor, hospital staff, videos and books.
My wife and I had the misfortune of having non-caring and overworked nurses. I am sure that several parents can relate to my experience, and the need to research information from other sources.
No, you never see a latch. You see before, and after, but never actually one happening. The camera is on the people, as it's described - you never see it happen.
1. They never show the baby actually LATCHING CORRECTLY. The baby isn't even rooting or acting hungry. It would be helpful if they would show a good latch, like on thebirthden dot com slash newman dot html.
One of the loveliest things about breastfeeding is that it's truly simple and easy. It *is* important to know how to get a good latch, and every woman should have the support of an IBCLC just in case. But once you get going, it's important to TRUST your body and your baby. This video makes it seem way more complicated and problematic than it actually is.
I am glad that you think that "it's truly simple and easy" to get a good latch. Some of us didn't had the good fortune to have good guidance at the hospital, and we has to research information in books, websites and DVDs.
I wish that all hospital provided "expert" advise to all parents, and not be as concern as to making money by not having the right staff for the job.
I absolutely agree with you. I didn't mean to imply that it's always easy at first (youtube kept making me shorten my comments so I left a lot out.) I had a lot of trouble with latch at first and had a lactation consultant come to my home. I totally agree that true SUPPORT for breastfeeding at the hospital is crucial.
2. Wet and dirty diapers matter much more than the frequency of nursing! I am shocked that this mom is told to wake the baby every 3 hours. Totally unnecessary. If there is a problem with weight gain or baby's output, it will take a while to sort it all out and a breastfeeding-friendly pediatrician may recommend encouraging more frequent nursing, but it's incorrect to suggest that waking a baby to nurse should be the standard approach.
The examples of babys attachment in this video are also quite poor and barely show any baby led attachment. The poor baby is having its head pushed on by this 'expert'. Where are the qualifications and credentials of the presenters?? Are they really nurses and doctors. What about a midwife or qualified lactation consultant (IBCLC)?
This video was done very gracefully. Kudos to the Mom in the video who volunteered herself for the footage. It's so helpful to see how a proper latch should look so you know what to look for.
I found this educational , I have to say ive come to admire women more and more, they do alot of great things for us as kids and we all just dont seem to realize how lucky we are.
