I adore these creatures and think they are so beautiful. I pray that we stop making orangutans orphans and start to let them live free in their own bit of forest and the places like Nyaru Menteng should be able to have all the support they need to make sure those who are orphaned can be rehabilitated or protected to keep them safe after they are injured.

I just pray enough land is put aside for them to be alright and have some freedom.

18 years ago I sat with a juvenile Orangutan in the forest of Malasian Borneo and it watched me as I made three marks in the sandy soil with a stick. I then offered it the stick which it took, made three marks in the soil and handed it back! I knew at that moment that this animal was very special indeed and needed help! If the population of the world had experienced that moment with me I feel that it would be safe today!

Borneo was clearly in big trouble then, with corrupt government who's enviromental minister owned the logging companies and the Japanese demand for hard woods. Now the threat is created by demand for palm oil. Sanctuaries have been set up for Orangutans but they are now overflowing.
