  • Pleeeeeease Mr Postman! I'm gonna take a look a their discography because these ladies are soulful and amazing! Like dee dee Warwick!

  • They gettin with those dance moves! Love the Marvelettes they my fav girl group like them better than the Supremes!

  • I saw them do this live at the Old Regal Theater in Chicago. These girls had it. They were sooo cool and Wanda had a voice on her. I preferred her, the Vandellas, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway...all the giant singers over the Supremes. The Supremes didn't sing to US, but the likes of the Marvelettes did. I miss those days when you could see quality for .80 cent and we had the nerve to complain about amount lol. It's certainly a different world now!

  • 5 ppl don't know what good music is. "Don't with Bill"!!!

  • THAT WANDA WAS A FIRECRACKER AND A DOLL AT THAT

  • Great to see this classic TV clip from when I was a kid...btw, Marvelettes is spelled with one 'L'

  • I remember this song when I was a little girl, and it stay with me, my parents use to listen to this song love it

  • This is for my niece, Tree!

  • minnie mouses lollll

  • don't mess bill

  • Talent on levels we will not see today...

  • A couple of girls up in Harlem saw me coming down the block to visit their aging grandmother and they started singing this to me.

  • GREAT! THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES AND THE FUN,TOM D. BRICK,NJ. {AT THE SHORE}.

  • No offense but does that huge banner talking about them paving the way for your favorite group have to scroll across in the beginning? If so can you make it smaller because it takes away from the performance.

  • @behdoc ABSOLUTELY!!! And they Mispelled "Marvelettes"!!!

  • @zodiolestes Which is nowhere near as amusing as the fact that you misspelled misspelled.

  • @Alikah1 Which goes to prove that we ALL have our STUPID days... Luv ya ANYHOO!

  • Bill was actually William " Smokey " Robinson

  • HOPE THEY MESSED WITH BILL AND IT DESTROYED YOU. YOU LEFT THIS EARTH UNHAPPILY. HOPE YOU AND BILL FOUND EACH OTHER RIP BILL & HOPE LOVE A SPECIAL FRIEND

  • Billy billy booster had a little rooster the rooster died and billy cried poor billy billy booster.

  • Mom's favorite song yeah she told a lady don't mess with her Bill.RIP MOM and Dad

    Missed and Loved always

  • Bill is 'Smokey' Bill Robinson, my dear.

  • All you people do is insult eachother and argue, so I suppose I should join in. Why are there 135 comments (at the time I was typing this) and not one of you fucking crackheads can mention what show this performance was taped from? Or what year it was aired?? Seems that should be more essential than if they were better/worse than the Supremes, your personal reflections on the song or if you have an uncle named Bill. Can someone please inform what show this is from, and what year it was shown.

  • @slutstation I'm NOT a Crackhead but this performance was taped in February 1966 from the T.V. Show HULLABALOO! I believe this record made it to #7 on the Pop Charts in January 1966- the MARVELETTES return comeback to the Top10 Pop Charts since "Playboy" in 1962...(Although "Too Many Fish In The Sea" could have made it? Had ANYONE at Motown would have been interested...)The Supremes were #1 Priority at the time...

  • my brother name was bill and t6his was the song of the decade from forest houses in the south bronx

  • I'm Bill. Don't mess with me.

  • I've been saying "Get the Marvelettes into THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME for years now because I was afraid that this might happen(I thought Wanda would be the 1st to bite the bullet though!) I wonder who those DICKhead Judges are over there?!? They Induct "Oddities" like Ma Rainey Jelly Roll Morton and Wanda Jackson BUT NOT THE MARVELETTES?! Somethins rotten and it AINT in Denmark and it AINT the Cheese neither!!!!

  • @zodiolestes I have been saying this for years now. They were the first girl group of their kind as far as having talent, being sexy (I think Katherine was just so, mmmm), and being able to move on stage. They were pioneers and their respect is way past due. At one time The Supremes wanted to be them. They wanted to move, have hit songs, and be sexy just like The Marvelettes. And they put Motown on the map. I don't know who the judges are but they certainly need a slap in the face.

  • @terrybigteekemp I know. They just inducted that Butt-Suckin' "Poser"- Crystals-Wanna-be-Darlene-Love?She & her group "The Blossoms" ripped off the Crystals stardom by recording "He's A Rebel" & "He's Sure The Boy I Love" in 1962 under THAT HOMICIDAL MANIAC PHIL SPECTORS TUTLEDGE! The Marvelettes PAID THEIR DUES and now one of their lead singers Gladys Horton is no longer around to receive LONG-OVERDUE RECOGNITION for her work and Dedication to The Marvelettes. There should be a ProtestPetition

  • Remember, these girls were putting out hits long before The Supremes. They were, at one time, the measuring stick that all girl groups were measured by. Gladys (RIP) is a bad mama jama, but Katherine...OH MY GOD!!!

  • Reminds me of my mom singing about my fine daddy "Bill" back in the day. The girls knew, she did not play..lol

  • 3 marvelettes?

  • Wow.. WOw... WOW! These gals are so classy and so (as the young people woudl say today) HOT!. Any woman with a huge bow in her hair who can llok sexy is amazing! Although Gladys singing Too many Fish in the Sea is my favorite Marvelttes song... my favorate advice song (that too amny woman don't take).. and one of my favorite songs of all time this song is great too. It's so sad that Gladys is gone. This honky would have loved to mete her.. and any of the Marvelettes. Real Ladies!

  • the girl groups were all so young when they were hitting big. they had such great voices. i miss them.

  • RIP!

  • R.I.P. Gladys...

This was ONE of my All-Time Motown Favorites.

  • Ladies and gentlemen this is what we call the real deal. There are no girl bands presently out there who can compete with these ladies! Thank you Gladys for starting up the Marvelettes and giving us such classic songs!

  • Gladys the lead singer died today. The hip music scene kinda lost track of her on the award shows and such. But she shines right thru the scratchy black and white haze of early TV. She smoulders her; the black Peggy Lee. God bless her and keep her close-by in heaven.

  • R.I.P GLADYS

  • OLDIES FOREVER HOLMES

  • I love Wanda's voice. This was such a cool bop record. Jam on girls. Jam on. You and Martha were my favorite Motown girl groups. Go on girls, go. Peace!

  • TODAY IS KATHERINE'S BIRTHDAY, GUYS!!!! (01/16)

  • Choreography-wise, these girls got down.Without losing elegance, they weren't exactly dainty, but more like sinewy cats. Whereas for the Supremes, subtlety and "less is more" went with their style and gowns, The Marvelettes moved all over the place - like a female version of the Temptations. Ironic, of course, because the female counterpart to the Primes (early Temps) were the Primettes (early Supremes)

  • @bobbymoya Those girls were great !! I loved both the Supremes and the Vandellas; however I agree with you The Marvelettes were the " female Temps " .What talent, good looks, elegant and could sing two great lead singers.

Why did Motown push them to the back and waste all that talent ???

R.I.P. Gladys ,a writer above called her the "black Peggy Lee" you something that person was correct . Lets get them into the Rock n Roll Hall of fame where they belong !!!

  • dont mess with Bill and dont mess with Yags

  • They still sound amazing!!!Takes me back to dancing in the rec room in junior high!Keep on making us smile ladies!! Those hair bows are hysterical.

  • They still sound amazing!!!Takes me back to dancing in the rec room in junior high!Keep on making us smile ladies!!

  • Don't underestimate the power of Mary Wells. Baby Love woulda worked just fine with her smokey voice.

  • This was my mothers theme song.Guess what my fathes name was ?

  • Music pure true amazing music :)

  • love the maveletts, sad that gordy did'nt give a real interest to them

  • these girls were hot in their day looking at the video

  • oh wow i forgot this one oh ya sing it girls

  • we used to do the temptation walk to this lmao!!

  • his uncle nicknamed him smokey joe because as a kid he loved cowboys,he later dropped joe,and also to remind him he was black in spite of his skin color and green eyes

  • @daylamont Yeh Smokey Robo people are mostly brown and darkskin, his mother was ill when she carried him. sometimes that means a more recessive looking child. they told his mother to abort, him, since she was so sick. HOWEVER SMOKEY DONT LOOKED MIXED HE LOOKS BLACK. HE HAS TWO BLACK PARENTS, WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT. LIKE JOHNNY MATHIS, HAVE TWO BLACK PARENTS, THE WAVY HAIR DOES NOT CHANGE THAT FACT.

  • Oh boy...when I was I think 6 years old... I saw what looked like candy sitting on my grandmothers desk....turns out they were my aunts tranquilizers (don't know what that's all about) anyway....I ate wound up in the hospital for 4 days, and what did I come home to:

My sister and friends making a joke out of it by singing "Don't mess with PILLS".

  • @tonybklyn You need to Quit It! Best joke I've heard all week!

    Bil

  • @tonybklyn Thank you. I really needed a laugh and this was the best.

  • girls keep away! find a guy of your own! LLS

  • you are so right my friend

  • this was written by william smokey robinson.hence.bill short for william

  • @daylamont funny alot of people would say ur over stating the obvious but there so many foreignors here now that dont know shit from shinola.tried to cash acheck acouple weeks back it was written with the name bill but my id said william. she questioned me why my name was different. her boss came over n told her bill is short for william, to get back at her playfully i gave her a laundry lis of jim is for james bob for robert etc. id come back next time nweek n quiz her she remembered em all!!

  • @daylamont O.K. tell us why they called him Smokey.

    Bil

  • thanks for the dedication your the greatest!!!!

  • The Very Best !!!!

  • i caught that one k. ur more clever than me!!! luv it!!!!

  • Truly original. Love it.

  • don't mess with bill was NOT written with the supremes or martha and the vandellas in mind, as anyone who knows about vocal blends could tell you. the harmonic voicings of the supremes would've been too soft, and martha & the vandellas' too hard. the marvelettes were the perfect middle ground between those groups, and every song they ever did sounds tailor-made for them, at least to my musicians' ears of 50 years experience....

  • @art1959lee

Smokey Robinson was the ONLY guy who knew what to do with this group.

    And it was pure magic.

  • I had often wondered.......what if Martha and the Vandellas had originally covered this tune, or the Supremes for that matter? Motown did have a practice of recording songs that were made famous by other Motown artists, so it was just a thought-

  • @christheone8773

I believe the Supremes would have done a better job of this song, christheone8773. Martha's voice is not as mellow as Wanda's so their out.

  • @xunclexx I can agree with that - with the way that Martha and the Vandellas perform "Nowhere To Run" and "Dancing In the Street", they were probably known as Motown's "bad girl" group-

  • amazing song , too bad because of that era they had to use such a common and dry name like BILL

  • I love the bass and the drums on this song. Sounds so good!

  • Don't Mess With Bill was written by William "Smokey" Robinson.

  • These ladies had the moves!! It still amazes me that the Marvelettes had a way of making you feel their lyrics!!! Regardless of who is doing the lead/ Gladys or Wanda, they are Simply Marvelous!!!!

  • OMG!!!! These sistas is BAD!!!!

The Funk Brothers is layin it downT0o on the instruments! Have Mercy!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Outstanding choreography!

  • Personally I think they should have done it a key or two higher - but then maybe she wouldn't make the highs, which she has trouble with here - tough song, just a drop too tough for her I think - not a strong vocal.

  • who cares.....just enjoy the song.. it's been around a hell of a long time!

  • I agree.. I don't like to butt in on young people talking about music of my youth. Motown was the strongest of its era. but, motown groups covered their own tunes if you know motown history like I do. The strongest singers didn't always sing lead, but, if the song hit, they made money, but, because they had development, singers had time to improve. ie; Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder

  • lmfaoooo. i love bill too much to mess with him :D

  • don't mess with bill kaulitz or tom will beat you

  • Thumbs up if you were directed here by Tokio Hotel USA =)

  • @MissNaminette FUCK tokio hotel! It's the gayest thing ever! FUCK OFF!

  • DAMN STRAIGHT

  • yup, DON'T MESS WITH BILL! <3

  • I dont even know who bill is and as a 16 year old girl i dont wanna mess with bill.Yes marvelettes

  • @jordantenista Bill is Smokey Robinson

  • @jordantenista Bill was Smokey Robinson....

  • as much as everyone hates Diana Ross these dayz, she kicked down doors for her fellow african american performers. White audience werent listening to Aretha Franklin in 1961! And motown did not hold back marvelettes! Gladys Horton turned down the copacabana because they couldnt do it.

  • Wanda comes from a large beautiful family. About seven girls, Regina, Adoria, Beatrice, Pamela, Mona. And Several brothers, Paul, Reggie. Not to name all of them.. They could all sing. They could have been another Jackson Family. I still have fond memories of all of them.

  • I talked to Wanda about the matter of two lead singers when I did a cover story for Goldmine on the Marvelettes. She told me there was never jealousy over sharing leads or who did what lead on what records. She said it was a relief for both her and Gladys to get a break from leads in shows. She also said everyone said they sounded alike but neither of them saw that at all. And they appreciated each other's talents. Actually, all the girls could sing lead.

  • I have no idea why people would say that they sound alike. they sound NOTHING alike and that's a good thing.

  • Well, the reality is Goldmine put in the indentity of the lead vocalist on each single because the editors agreed for listeners not familiar with the group the difference was not clear. Wanda indeed did the list of leads for me! These ladies were class people. Katherine Schaffner has led an exemplary life of community service for one and she is an intelligent and elegant person as you could imagine (beautiful, too). Motown treated them carelessly, and it's inexcusable.

  • Perhaps one of the greatest of all girl groups, simply because they managed to have two great leads who didn't try and undermine each other. Gladys and Wanda were to amazing vocalist.

  • What are their names from right to left?

  • Why do all of you guys keep spelling the "Marvelettes" name wrong???

  • is there a version of this with please mr.postmans

    lead singer?

  • AND... you will notice that the lead singer in THIS video is not the same Marvellette who sings, "Please Mr. Postman" ... these girls all had talent and they happily shared the spotlight equally.

Sadly, such was not the case with The Supremes beause Florence had a KICK ASS voice!.

  • The Marvelettes WERE better than the Supremes. They had TWO great lead singers. And Diane was NOT fond of Gladys Horton.

But they were more soulful and R & B--not crossover.

R & B = limited market and less dollars for Gordy--which was ALL He cared about. The bigger the demographic the bigger the BUCK.

You take a bunch of poor teens and tweens without knowledge of entertainment law such as contracts, clauses, etc. who sang on the corner for the LOVE of it...

    Easy fodder for Gordy's B.S.

  • love this song.....i just dont understand how racist ppl back then didnt like black ppl....how can u hate something so beautiful...wanda is drop dead gorgeous in this video...2's...

  • They are talking a hurricane named Bill and I jokely said don't mess with Bill then I remember there was a song. So I looked for it here at good old youtube and sure enough found it. Showed it to hubby and he got a kick out of it, LOL!

  • It still baffles me that the Supremes somehow managed to overshadow this clearly superior group. Their catalog had such variety, growth... I believe both their material and their delivery was better, and overall, more well thought out.

  • Trust me...they could have messed with me any time!

  • I agree The Supremes were good but The Marvelettes were better

  • Well, I will say if you compare the Marvelettes albums of the late '60s, particularly "Sophisticated Soul" and "In Full Bloom" musically they are advanced over what the Supremes were doing (compared with, say, "Let The Sunshine In" which originally was titled "No Matter What Sign You Are," and "Cream of the Crop."). That's because Motown producers loved trying off-beat material with the Marvelettes and Wanda particularly could sing anything well.

  • diana's voice and choice of songs along with star quality made her out shine all the other girl groups inside and outside of motown. diana is still on top. sorry mary wilson , jean terrell was right when she said , YOU CAN'T SING!

  • this song shouldve been in Kill Bill. its got that quirky tarantino feel that would go great with that movie!

  • grainy vid but boy what a great sound !!!!

  • As far as Diana Ross and the Supremes go, Berry Gordy had the hots for Ms. Ross and she then became his fixation and STAR. (By the way when Diana was married one of her daughters was fathered by Gordy)

There is no denying that The Supremes were a great group, but listen to the background vocals on Please Mr. Postman... nothing Diana, Mary and Flo did ever topped that! Had they been given the "time" they would have outshined Berry's star.

  • Never. Berry's real fixation was money and Diana had dollar signs all over her. She was the star of Motown. She sang on more number one hits than any american white or black in 60's. You can't achieve that by simply sleeping with the boss.

  • Everyone at Motown had a fixation with cash.

Agreed, Diana had hits, she's no Streisand, though. He could have given ANY of those songs to his other female singers, he chose Diana for more than just cash reasons, her illegitimate daughter with him while she was still married to another man proved they both had more in mind than just another million in the bank. That said, none of these comments are going to change anyone else's life... so... it is what it is, and it was what it was.

  • Are you getting it. The Supremes had more number ones than anyone other than the Beatles in the 60's That is an amazing historical fact. Considering the social climate on this country, The Supremes and Diana deserve nothing but our respect.. I won't even comment on their daughter born after Diana left the Supremes because that's just kind of tacky. Those three black girls from the Brewster projects had a magic that is under apprciated or maybe just not understood.

  • And we all know WHY they did. :)

And just where are Mary and Diana now?

The Beatles continue to sell MILLIONS of records a year.

STOP in the name .. of all that is sane and remember... it was what it was... and it IS what it is.

  • Funny you said Stop in the name of...most recognized songs in the world. America my have you forgotten their legends, but diana can still sell out arenas all over europe and asia. That's where Miss Ross is. Have you listened to oldies station lately? An hour rarely goes by without at least one supreme song.

  • BTW check how many hits my video of the supremes has comapred to this one. I think that says it all.

  • that's not true - Diana was pregnant with Berry's baby before she got married. She confronted Berry 1 last time about getting married...he blew her off....so she dust her feet off & moved on. She married a guy who worshipped her ...even though he knew she was pregnant. After she had Rhonda...she had 3 more girls for her hubby ...married again & had 2 more (boys). She evidentaly loves kids & is a great mother.

  • Very nice post! A great song and the grainy video that makes it so real and memorable.

  • Muh better than raspy Ross!

  • Wanda Rogers was as adorable as her voice. A cutie.

If I'd have been around back then, I might have chased her and Mary Wilson!

  • It sounds evil....HERE:

    Take this Advice:

    1. put your finger on your nose

    2. hold your breath for 5 seconds

    3. say the name of your love

    4. that person will ask you out on the next Friday

    5. you will have the best day tomorrow

    6. if you don't copy and paste to 2 other videos you will have bad luck and die in

  • Look at the early choreography. Fantastic performance !

  • Smokey was indeed the best that Motown ever had. Diana, to me was always less natural than Florence or Mary... I preferred the Marvellettes and Martha and the Vandellas and Mary Wells. They were "genuine."

  • @JudeWest4868 Unfortunately, even tho Flo had the best voice, The Supremes were given very poor material to sing. The Marvelettes turned down "Where Did Our Love Go?. ONLY Dianas "Freakish" voice could lift their sound-alike-songs off the ground. The Marvelettes couldn't have done nothing with that song. And Martha Reeves or Mary Wells couldn't have pulled off "Baby Love"...

  • well supremes were it in the 60. Marvalettes were gud but supremes went so much further

  • but the supremes were never as good. velvellettes were better too!

  • lmmfao wait a second, whos the most famous and successful female girl group of all time, who does a portion of the R&B Soul singers look up 2? Diana Ross and THe supremes thats who. like nobody female group can really compare

  • not true. they got all the shine. martha and the vandellas clearly outshined them. if barry wasnt sexin diana ross the supremes would have been a back up group. and diana wasnt the best voice in the group.

  • MrPhilly... YOU TELL 'EM, Baby! :)

  • i agree also jude, barry was sexing diana. thats the ONLY reason why she got the spotlight.

i respect her but lets not forget WHAT gave her the advantage. and all this talk about diana being the best out of motown. FOR THE RECORD. smokey was the best thing outta motown. the supremes get over on name recognition, but as far as talent. diana wasnt the best (or sexiest) female on motown. thats a fact!

  • @MrPhillyrick1

and he was sexing martha revees, chris clark and many other too...do your research!

if diana had success is because people(white and black) liked her...period!

  • @prettybabymj its really sad that you have no life and have to spend your time reading alost two years worth of comments to respond to something i said 16 months ago.\ you obviously have too much time on your hands, get a life.

  • ALWAYS liked them better than the Supremes.

  • Me too! "And No where to Run" by Martha and the Vandellas was another GREAT Motown hit!

  • another from early Twisted Wheel 66 these girls were so earthy MAGIC

  • Hear what I say: Girls, keep away! Don't mess with Bill!

    Any questions?

  • I always love to catch this-thank you. I wish there had been more Marvelettes live appearances that had been filmed and saved--because, unlike Martha & The Vandellas who, no disrespect intended, I felt really had zero visual presence when performing on TV, The Marvs really were sexy and so cute, with great choreography. Yeah, in a way they did pave the Supremes' way by being presented not just as a "girl group," but as a very visual "entertainment act." Great post!

  • around the time of the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal (like 1996 or 97), the oldies station used to play this song featuring sound bites with Bill, Hilary, and Monica....thats what I remember most about this song

I guess thats what I get for being born 20 years after it was released, lol

  • great tune...so motown :)

  • yeah, smokey wrote a lot of songs for the supremes. and he wrote songs for Marvin Gaye and many other people as well.

  • I liked a boy named Bill when this song came out. All the girls liked him. He was soooo cute! In fact he was downright pretty! I wonder what he looks like now?

  • Great post!! This was written by "Smokey" Bill Robinson... I wonder if the lyrics are autobiographical.

  • They just don't make music like this anymore. What a shame.

  • I ain't about to mess with Bill. No no no no.

  • SWAGGA!!!!!!! o I remember my girls!!! and today 2008, they got

SWAGGA! im laugin slap happy!!! im glad i found this, so thanks to ivyfield! and i like that name also!!! im cheezin! grinnin!!!!! happy!!!

  • Great clip! I have seen the video but not the original audio to this one! I have always wondered how Gladys and Kat sounded singing this song instead of the Andantes! Superb!

  • I remember this song from High School Days. Oh Boy !!! Everyone was singing it/ or trying to.

  • Motown really missed out by not doing right by these talented women

  • I agree with you!

  • @tummielvr I liked the Supremes but the Marvelettes were my favorite back then.

  • This is awesome ... what a song!!

The Marvelettes had some very cool songs.

    Thanks for this.

  • Great post. This is actually my first time listening to this song all the way through lol. I'm usually so focused on The Supremes and Florence, I never give a listen to many other Motown groups hehe. Great group, Flo herself even toured with them a little

  • I KNOW YOURE GLAD YOU DID LISTEN!!

  • The Marvellettes and Please Mr. Postman was even a hit for The Beatles! BUT... no one sang it like these girls.

They weren't "manufactured" they were just great, gritty singers. LOVE THEM!
