  • Mercedes is building GREAT cars!!! :))

  • it's amazing how in the 70s you were unique if you bought a BMW or an Audi instead of a Mercedes or Cadillac (Jaguar in Britain's case) but now it's the other way around

  • good car

  • mercedes has always built the best diesels! they made the first diesel powered production passanger car (1936) and has practically always had the fastest ones (standard)

we had a w210 270cdi -00, 2,7L straight 5 turbodiesel 170hp just like this older model shown in the vid. great car but too expensive in taxes, dont get why diesels are more expensive than petrols, bad for the environment? ever heard of a biopetrol?? i certainly havent, i drive a w123 240D -83 :)

  • Dzien Dobry To ja MUMinka kolega on sobie nie życzy porównań oka z bmw!!!Pozdrawiam

  • love his afro hair do!!! he looks like a poodle

  • Probably the last of the good Mercs. I drove a new one, and I couldn't have cared less for it.

  • Diesels are waay better then petrols, i,ve always tought like that it has a nice enginesound it has good fuellmilage good torque. I just like diesels.

  • love mercedes

  • Many manufacturers have shipped alot of their production to the likes of India, Thailand and Brazil. I had a Brazilian built Honda motorcycle, and to be honest, it was the worst built motorcycle I had. For a Honda, the build quality was appauling.

  • @1100HondaCB Sure, Honda had been building (tax free) bikes in Manaus, Brazil for a long time, but the e-class was never built there. The Civic, Fit and City are made in Sao Paulo.

  • Good practical car. Well built and thoughtout. The later Brazilian built Mercedes are not quite so good.

  • @1100HondaCB Hi! If you could please clarify your statement... I am brazilian and the only consumer passenger cars built in Brazil were the first A-Class and the CLC, maybe the W203 for the USA market, but I never had definitive proof of that. Are you saying the W210 was also made there? I know it was produced in Pune, India.

  • @Krycek2008 yeah i had one of those "USA MARKET" Mercs, it was CRAP, ive always been a merc fan but it was terrible, i hate in bmw ads the say at the botttom , European models shown, we pay the same money , and the european models look better

  • @Krycek2008 1100HondaCB said "The later brazilan built...", note the word 'later', hope that clarifies.

  • @deiz92 I was saying that the E-Class was never made in Brazil, I will assume he meant "later Hondas" not Mercedes. That's why i asked him. Mercedes is no longer producing cars in Brazil just trucks and vans.

  • wagons make soooo much more sense than SUVs

its sad they aren't popular here in the US

  • 3:00 guns n roses :D

  • my 300 turbodiesel has now 312.000 km on it , still runs like new.

but he has a rust problem

  • @burkseburk Damn things rust like hell. Mercedes didn't want to replace a badly rusted door on my father's then 7 year old w210 estate. Now it needs a new boot lid and the left A pillar is rusting too.

  • Holy crap @ 4:30 - Petrol costs 60p!

  • @573W1E6R1FF1N god bless inflation!

  • "...most estate cars have bottoms like Kate Moss" lol

  • The W210 is the frist of the rubbish Merc's.

These had terrible electrics and the rusted badly.

  • Quality, just bought one of these (second hand obviously) only 85,000 on the clock, no rust or damage and paid £1,800, absolute bargain and yes you can get everything and everyone in the back, mine even has 7 seats! BTW just sold my BMW, better performance, yes but down on practicality & just guzzled petrol, just got too expensive to run.

  • even these old day reviews of cars still beat the likes of fifth gear for their entertainment value but also for being intuitive as well.

  • Not generally a bad car, but not traditional MB quality. This was a time when the BMW option had better quality. Its nice to see that Merc is now getting back on form with quality and now ranks above BMW and Audi in JD power

  • B.M.W's are for people with track suits, baseball caps and no taste.

Mercedes are for people with taste, class, and an appreciation of quality and tradition.

    Mercs lead,the rest follow.

  • Mercedes W210, 95-99 models big problem was rust, otherwise is it a great car.

  • @McMaster1500 Terrible electrics too

The W124 was the last of the good Merc's.

  • No it's not, lol. The back end isnt exactly beautiful but i think overall the car has decent proportions and styles.

  • That's a nice car!

I REALLY wish they sold that generation wagon with a diesel in the US!!!

The last diesel wagon we got from Stuttgart was the 1987 W124 wagon

  • Because! engine size and body size must have power to weight ratio of 1:1 meaning equal power over equal weight distribution. Otherwise if a car has heavier engine and a much heavier bosy it will require more effort to pull it. SO that BMW has the wrong engine

  • Plus the BMW analysis is wrong He should be saying that the BMW is incorrectly designed with no thought given to engine size and body design and size so he is talking bollocks

  • and why? beacuse he should be saying that fuel economy in mercedes only improves and gets better when you maintain them and don't run them into the ground

  • jeremy clarkson cannot present I am suprised 14 years ago he still presented this show beacuse this car is so iconic both petrol and diesl are economic anyway so it proves he has no engineering degree or qualification's he puppet for a tv show

  • @harry38150 I for one LOVE JC and Top Gear. I think hes great and funny. And I have a 97 C280 that has done 43mpg on the highway and averages 27mpg in the city. I know its completely different from this car. But I get an economical car with some nice performance with a 0-60mph in under 8 seconds top speed limited 130mph.

  • petrol prices have to be corrected 4 inflation to make any sense of them

everything has gone up, wages have gone up, the pound just aint what it used to be

  • Tell us more about yourself!

  • I didn' t know "sweet child of mine" was quite a good driving song.

I don't really like this E class but I do like the newer one.

  • Pause the Video at 4:30 and look at the fuel prices. Today they are almost double that! So in 1985 [12 years previous] were they around 30p per litre? and in 2019 will it be well over £2 a litre?

  • What's the song at 5:34?

  • day when clarkson got old!! XD diesel over patrol! RIIIIGHT

  • my cuzins 300d has a good 327,646 miles and it still starts on the first try amaingly good car

  • Is that car refined?

  • mercedes built cars like tanks. not so sure about now but then they did.

  • They DID build tanks,MrIWILLSUBSCRIBE :P

no wonder they made cars like tanks for a time too :))

  • no, im saying that idk if the quality is as good now. but yes their millitary influence assimilated into their car manufacturing.

  • Old Mercedes vehicles are tough! My 1997 E300 TD has survived numerous encounters like backing up into a tree, crashing into a garage door, having a 26-pound block of hail smash on the windshield, and another car (a Vauxhall Astra to be exact) hitting my left side at 58 miles an hour. My merc looks like a piece of crap because of these damages, but it's fast, has a clean interior, no problems, and can be used at the fullest!

  • If you drive like this you should´nt have a drivers licence

  • lol I'm not the one who caused the accidents. My wife drove it before I did

  • I got the car after her. She caused the accidients, couldn't sell it, so now I picked it up for 700 pounds. I drive it as my work car and for my weekend car, I have a 2004 Nissan 350z Roadster. Both are great cars.

  • Sounds pretty nice. Want a new a car i know some good

  • Nah I dont need a new car. My Nissan's lease expires in 2 weeks, and after that I'm getting a 2002 Nissan Skyline R32 from this dealership for a good price. Im excited :)

  • Oh you´re from San Diego they drove a tank through there

  • I am from San Diego. I moved to Britain with my father when I was 10 years old (in 1999). Now I live with my fiaonce (soon to be wife) near Wales.

  • Sweet Child O' Mine, what a fitting song ;)

  • 4MATICbenz, thanks for that, I am the proud owner of a 1983 w123 240d. The w124 was also a good car but the w210 was shite.

  • Lol, m8 take it from a 18 yr old German who lives In stuttgart, The W210 E-klasse Is as refined as the W140 S-Klasse, They were built during the same time period, The W124 300D or even the W123 Were great back then, however now obselete However i am a AMG Fan, Show me any wagon, compared with a 6.3L V12 or even the 5.5 V8 for that matter, the E-klasse was bad and faulty safety let go ect... The very new one now, Has just almost reached the values of the W210!,

  • Mercedes is the best

  • But time has told its true story and its clear to see how much better the BMW really was. It does not suffer serious rust to both its body and structure. Its aircon will work after 100,000 miles and it's wiring system is not made of cheese. This was one of the worst cars ever made.

  • I have this car in 2002 model year, and unfortunately some of what you said is true. Their is no rust on mine, the trim, materials, and body work have held up remarkably well. but the AC Compressor has failed TWICE, and many of the elctronic hardware in the car suck. Still an awesome estate/wagon and it most certainly is not one of the worst cars ever made. It's just not as good as the Benz's of the olden days

  • the W124 were better before mercedes started getting a bit lose ended. They were over-engineered masterpieces of car manufacture. 1 of the many great cars of this world and there are so mnay still going. I know of 1 that has done well over 500,000 miles and is still going like something from a showroom unbelievable

  • true, and the w123's were even better than that! Especially the diesels, those 3.0L Turbodiesels engines are said to have easily surpassed 1,000,000 miles under normal maintenance

  • i totally agree my father's w124 300d did 285,000 before he sold it and the w123 300d did about 460,000 or somewhere near that and everything worked apart from the air con that needed re-gasing but 1 great machine with a superb engine and mechanics. Why are we buying such shoddy built plastic crap nowadays when we can have cars that can drive and run so beautiful like the old merc's its stupid

  • We can thank the Japanese for this. They build cars that are equal in quality to the older benz's and for much cheaper b/c those auto companies treat their employees like slaves and have more money to spend on good products and components. This is very sad, but that still wont ever keep me from buying a Mercedes. They are still one of the most prestigious companies in my eyes

  • HenryDiscipline, I totally respect your opinion, and most Mercedes fans know it`s kinda true. What BMW owner`s don`t understand is that, we would rather have a rotten MB that doesn`t run, and take the bus, than spend time in a dull BMW. Maybe we are just stupid, go figure. Or maybe BMWs, even though technically superior, are aimed at, let`say... less "creative" people and unattractive to MB buyers. =)

  • @Krycek2008 WTF. How can u be a fan of something u cant even afford!

  • @mannythefirst Till this day I have owned 1996 C230K, 1999 C230K, 2005 C180K, 2006 SL55AMG and 1998 SLK230K. The last 2 are one my other videos. I am 26 y old. Thank you.

  • @Krycek2008 Oops i just got served.

  • And I can't afford a 2000 Euro car to go to college :(

  • @RockyGNR In most countries you have to pay to go to college... so I be glad you have a college to go to! :-)

  • @HenryDiscipline My Mercedes C280 97 has 106k miles on it and EVERYTHING in the car still works like brand new. Except the rear brake light, which from what Iv seen doesnt work on most early C classes. Has to do with the bulb not fitting correctly. Oh and the rear antenna no longer is motorized, no worries though theres nothing on the airwaves these days anyway. Other than that shes mechanically mint.

  • @HenryDiscipline hey mate bmws havent got as much as a personality as a merc my mums bf drives an e300 saloon auto deisel and mercs aremore lively

  • i hate diesel cars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • have a mercedes e300 turbo diesel avantgarde 99 with 176HP

  • no 1 gives a shit dude....

  • lol

  • Ten years old and still a great looking car. the newer ones, although very similar in size and shape, look much sharper

  • Comment removed

  • I AGREE WITH U !!

  • @4MATICbenz I didnt know jag made estate cars?

  • @320bit , yep Jag made (and i believe they still produce) the X-type Sportwagon, or estate. Thing doesnt even COMPARE to an E-class estate

  • i have a mercedes w210 e300 turbo diesel avantgarde 98 . engine is perfect 100% engine . de engine is 435.856 !! . de engine is perfect . de w210 e300 turbo diesel is the best diesel car

  • i have one, 177cv version, but reprogramed... a bullet

  • thx :)

  • what's the name of the song at 3:02?

  • Guns and roses - Sweet child of mine

  • sweet child of mine guns and roses :D

  • what's the song at 5:30?

  • The band is Spin Doctors, the song is eighter Two Prices or Go Ahead Now.

  • thanks a lot!

  • Go Ahead Now

  • What is the song at 2:13?

Please help, I love the sound of it!

  • Boo Radleys - Wake Up Boo!

  • I liked TopGear better in those days, when they also tested "real" cars and not only supercars all the time...

  • wierd, this was the only diesel engine available on this car in 1997, no smaller ones

  • actually there was a 290td also, and a 220D 4door saloon

  • Can't really imagine wanting to move a car that heavy around with a smaller engine... for that matter, can't really imagine shopping for a small engine anyway :-D

Great machines but I'd probably go for a 98 or a 99 with the turbo if I were buying a w210. As it is, I'm happy with my 86 300SDL... the older ones just seem to have more personality somehow. To me, anyway, it's a personal taste. There's just something about a huge s-class that appeals to me...and they become affordable at 20 yrs :-D

  • great utility car!

  • 4:30 look at the price of petrol and diesel back then

  • very sad

  • really sad...

  • what other diesel cars r cheaper than their equvilent patrol models ????

  • Good but w124 is better...

  • The W124 was a good car as well, but in witch way do you think it was better? It was smaller, older engines = had less power, older transmission - only 4 speed automatic, older undercarrige and recirculating ball-steering = not as good handling as the W210 and less comfortequitment. The only think I can think of is, that it rusts a bit slower.

  • Could not agree with you more. I think they're losing what made them so popular and beloved worldwide.

Testing supercars is like chocolate, you like it, but you don't want it as your everyday meal.

  • exactly!

  • diesel really advanced, JC just tested the Jaguar xj6 TD which gets 1000+ miles per tank.

  • this is wot clarkson should go back to being like and this is wot top gear should be like a real life sensible intellegent consumer motoring program not a boring super car fest

  • Great car - bought one 2 months ago. The diesel really lasts longer than petrol.

  • Have one, like it alot!

  • Look at 4:31, look how cheap fuel was back then!

  • And it's truly good it gets more and more expensive since we simply waste too much of it.

And it's fossile, there won't be any new in the soil just because we want to.

And biofuels can only satisfy a, say, 5% of World's demand.

  • I have one in my garage....is very fast and you can do a lot of thigs....drift...burnout and many other things

  • "What have I done?!? I'm not old enough for diesels!!!" ROFL!!!

  • Lol, classic Clarkson!
