    and is asking you to do some other stupid spotting acts,

    you must have the vigilance & guts to tell the mother fucking limpy kiddo to fuck off with the impossible loading & pretend as a season bb'er to give spotting instructions

    The best thing to do, as a spotter, is to slap the kiddo and beat the shit out of his stupid little brain.

  • What a fail. It's called the suicide grip for a reason. You are NEVER supposed to use that grip when performing a lift that involves moving the bar separate from your body. Only lifts similar to the back squat call for this grip.

  • @itzeyadig NAH! According to safety, you shouldn't be lifting anything heavier than 20Kg's, so does that mean you should do girly weights? :) Safety is necessary to a certain extinct but mostly it's just personal prefference, IMO

    Actually, there may be some evidence to support alleviating pressure on the wrists. Also, it changes the mechanics of the lift and may be better for lifters with different strengths.

  • @Draykid citation needed. If you want to "alleviate pressure on the wrists", how about having the wrist track your forearm and using freakin wrist wraps? Only idiots that bench with their wrist bend might think that suicide grip would help when, clearly, the fact of the matter was that they were no benching well from the start. I bet those guys (maybe you included?) also bend their wrists on squats....

    It took a while, but Mel Siff and some colleagues found that a thumbless grip alleviated wrist pains in the bench press.

    The only thing I use a thumbless grip on is overhead presses, which is done with a specific purpose and because there is almost zero chance of dropping a barbell.

    Dave Tate stated that a thumbless grip switches the focus to the triceps.

  • It was NOT the spotter's fault, it was my fault. He let go quickly because that's what I told him to do. He wasn't expecting me to take the bar off the rack so quickly. Also, yes, I was using a dangerous grip. I used the thumbs-under grip for many years with never so much as a "close call". Needless to mention, I have changed my grip to wrapping my thumbs.

  • Keeping your thumbs behind the bar is a legit way to lift, but he made his mistake by trying to get into his downward motion too quickly. Besides, it's not a good lift if you don't control the weight well through the entire motion.

The doofus trying to lift the weight (very stupid hand grip) if you slow down the video and play in slow motion if you download the vid shows the spotter didn't let go until this bozo was starting to move the bar forward and down. By then it's too late for any spotter to do anything expect help get the weight off him once it falls. If it was my gym, this fool would be banned for life.

  • Also, I never blame the spotter for all the dudes that think its the spotters fault. Its not the spotter who was benching the weight and if he tried to stop it from falling he could mess himself up.

  • An average human can withstand between 600-800 pound weight before his chest caves in. Of course it depends when the weight falls and from what height. To say this guy was damn lucky is a understatement. Dropping just a few inches higher and he would have propably crushed his wind pipe and that would be that.
