@Shamless99 Because you don't have to pick off to second, you can spin and not throw the ball, first is the only base you have to throw to when you pick (unless you step off first).
My summer league team pulled this play off when I was 15 or 16. We actually practiced it for a while and did this exact same thing and got the guy out.
Terrible baserunning...when you slide back you automatically look for the ball...and even if you did go, you pick up the coach who should be telling you to go back...busch
So for those who don't play baseball can someone explain this without the jargon. I understand the basic concept but at the end wouldn't the pitcher who didn't throw it throw it to the guys behind him cause the player has run to the next base?
@michaeltbear They have to tag him with the ball to get him out. If he reaches the next base without being tagged with the ball, he's safe. Therefore, they throw it where he is going so he can't get there without being tagged.
The protestation that it's not a balk is wrong. It is a balk. That inside move cannot be done in that way, whether you actually throw it or not. The only reason you didn't get called on it is because the umpires would have to explain why they called a balk on a non-throw to second, when that isn't even the issue. All they did was avoid an argument. Balk.
@rmizeelectric Not wrong. The first move the pitcher makes is cocking the left knee while raising his left elbow 0:04. Can't do that with the knee to raise the front foot as the first motion on the inside move, period. I've seen this move a thousand times over the years, and discussed it at length with umps at all levels. You cannot make the inside move to second like this kid did, no matter how much anyone claims you can. Whether it's called or not is immaterial. It's still a balk.
@TomKaren94 okay your right! the umps have just been feeling lazy for the last few years and don't call it so they don't have to explain themselves... hahahahaha
@rmizeelectric Would you want to get into this argument at that level when the other manager won't give you grief if you don't call it? There's only three explanations: The umps chronically do not know the rule; The umps chronically miss the call; The umps want to avoid the argument. So which is it? There is no fourth option, because it "not" being a balk is not correct.
@TomKaren94 Or, explanation 4: the "umpires" that you talked to have never seen/heard of a traditional spin-move pick-off (it's pretty basic). The rules are the rules, umps don't miss calls on purpose in fear of starting an argument... c'mon now, that's a ridiculous argument. A spin-move pick-off to second IS allowed (see video); and so is a FAKE spin-move pick-off to second (again, see video).
@Coyote1012 Yes, the inside move is allowed. However, as in all things related to pitching, you have to do it in exactly the right way. It has nothing to do with "fake" anything... it is the pitcher's initial movement after coming to a stop. On the inside move, you must disengage first. This pitcher did what almost all do... he broke his front knee to lift his left foot, beginning the inside turn. If you do that, you cannot make the inside move or it's a balk.
@TomKaren94 There are two different types of pick-off moves to second base. The inside move (turning your landing foot over your planted and stepping over [inside move]) and the spin move (disengaging the rubber by spinning with your planted foot [spin move]). And in the second move (spin move) you're allowed to fake.
@Coyote1012 I do have to correct myself on one thing... I've been writing 'inside move' here. This is the 'spin move'. Not sure why I did that. Nonetheless, on the move made in the video, you must disengage the rubber first. The first move here was bending the left knee to raise the forward foot. Can't do that after the stop unless you go home. Doesn't matter if you fake the throw to second or not. There's nothing more to be said.
@TomKaren94 Erroneous, because that ever-so-slight motion happened too quick in real-time for an umpire to assess clearly/accurately and since they didn't initially call a balk they would never reverse it [so I did a good job]. AND umpires DO/ALWAYS WILL give the pitchers a little bit of room/leniency for human error (since it's nearly impossible to do a QUICK spin-move without slightly moving the front leg). It's a dirty play; BUT it wouldn't ever be called a balk in a game. Sorry. Video proof.
i feel like that wouldn't work too often. As a baserunner I wouldn't advance until I judge where the ball is and he obviously didn't see any ball in the outfield.
Tricky play though i'd like to try that this season
Okay it's been a looooooooooooong time since I played baseball so I've forgot over the years. But since the runner on the bag got the last out of the inning does the guy who was batting get to go back up in the next at bat or does it go to the next guy?
@Shrubberee ok so the pitcher turned around and faked the pick off and he faked it by making the second and shortstop dive for the "ball" and look at the outfield and making the runner think it was a wild pickoff and the ball got loose but the pitcher had it all along and threw to third to end the game...my explanation wasnt specific but i just wanted to tell you the jist of what happened
my team did this once last summer and the ump said it was unsportsmanlike and that if we did it again we'd have to forfeit the game... completeley legal though
wow @txsfn47 youre wrong. it wasnt a balk because when a pitcher makes a pickoff move to second base he doesnt have to throw it, whether he stepped off or not
he stepped in, not out. if he had stepped his foot out towards center field then thats stepping OUT. but he stepped towards home. so he has to get rid of the ball. cant hold on to it. or at least thats what my rules are in college idk what grade or age this is
You only have to step off to go to first base...you don't have to step off in any other situation. That's a play we had in our back pocket when I was in Junior League (13 yrs old). Just like the fake to third, throw to first is not a balk (right hander doesn't step off the rubber there either), you can fake to second or third from the stretch. I saw this unsuccessfully run at a high school state tournament game. My favorite 1st and 3rd play was step off, fake to first, fire to 3rd...worked
If that's a balk, I'm the queen of England. Umpire behind the plate didn't see, the two field umps didn't see it...but because this is youtube, and we obviously are pros, it was a balk. Still a douchey thing to do to the baserunner, win with class, but looks legal to me.
Its pretty funny. In baseball you cant step off the mound like that. You have to turn to the right you cant turn to the left if your right handed its illegal. But hey little girls dont have to play by the rules right
Normally I get mad when people use cheap tactics to win but this wasn't so bad and seriously don't run unless your 3rd base coach tells you to, runners fault great play!
His back foot did not come off the rubber first. So this fake throw is a balk. There should not be an out. Go through it in slow-mo by clicking the pay-pause button a million times and you can see he never stepped off the rubber to start the move = balk.
@ILOVEUMPS He doesn't have to throw on a pickoff to second or third. Only a balk if it's to first and he doesn't step off. Look it up if you don't believe me.
I don't see how anyone can decipher whether he picked up his back foot first or not from this angle. Looks like he did them both at the same time, which no ones gonna call.
@carpetmartsucks so your concept of real man is that of someone with no inititative. Intelligence and deceiving is part of games and sports and of human race with some notable exceptions as yourself.
@Bernie8903 Intelligence yea, but I don't see how deception like that can be used for good in baseball. To me it looked like a bunch of chumps couldn't beat a good team with D and hitting so they resulted to some cowards play.
You're only required to throw the ball if the runner is on first and you've already started movement. You can always just step off the rubber, but if you've started your wind-up with a runner only on first, you must throw to first base or the plate. With multiple runners or a runner on second or third, you can do anything as long as you move your back foot first and don't stop and start after you've set yourself.
@Sam1878Henry You're kidding, right? The pitcher only pretends to overthrow the ball to second base. The shortstop and second basemen give good performances, too. The runner reacts to them and sprints for what he thinks is an easy base advance. Instead, the pitcher had the ball the whole time and lobs it to third for the tag-out.
thats awesome..Bill Buckner who used to be a 1st baseman for teh Boston red socks used to do trick plays all the time where the pitcher would check to first, then buckner would go teh mound and disscuss whatever with the pitcher and would fake givin teh ball to the pitcher..then head back to first and setup and wait till the man on first would step off teh bag and slap him with the ball in his glove he never gave to teh pitcher..classic!!
@bigmarcsize The runner stopped in the middle of the basepath after I threw to third. Looked up at me, made eye-contact and said, "You son of a bitch." I laughed. hahaha
@Coyote1012 THATS WHATS UP.. PEOPLE SAYING THAT PLAY IS BUSH LEAGUE. BUT THERE ARE TRICK PLAYS IN EVERY SPORT WHY NOT BASEBALL.. SHIT IF YOU ARE TUNED INTO THE GAME THEN YOU WOULDN'T GET TRICKED...
@coolkidcater u dont know who the hell i am, and my life beats the hell outa urs id put anythin on that. just cus i aint walkin around in some city with name brand clothes being a pompous asshole doesnt mean i dont have a life
Inappropriate isn't the right word to describe this abortion of a comment. You sir are an immature troll. Take your incestuous rape fantasies elsewhere please, it has no business on this page. Thank you for your time... goodbye.
@PlatinumRomance If you do a pickoff move to first your right foot can either jump in front of the rubber, and if you do that you HAVE to throw the ball.
But if your right foot goes behind the rubber, you do NOT have to throw the ball.
@RAWRDlNOSAURS Ok maybe we're thinking of other things. You can only fake throw to first if you first, fake throw to another (occupied) base or the runner has already committed to another base (stealing). Other than that, it is an illegal move. If i am pitching and there is a runner on first and only first base...i CANNOT fake throw to first! Damn bro.
@PowerLoveSoundMind1 Yeah but that's 2nd if i remember correctly someone did this to me to 1st and they called it a balk but that was only 1st i'm positive you can do it to 2nd and 3rd because for most pitchers its a full turn to get to 2nd and 3rd I'm not entirely sure though
Amazing play that required the pitcher, middle infielders, AND centerfielder give A+ acting jobs. The best part is the pitcher acting upset then causally throwing to third.
id say its the left fielders legs. for the play to work best, the center fielder would be backing up the play behind 2nd and acting like he was chasing it down. it looks like the "legs" come from the left field direction, to me at least, as well. no way the cf could have gotten there that quickly
Why is it not a balk

justinjonesyca 3 months ago
@Babyboizdrummer as long as you break when you are stepping off the plate, which he did when he fake threw it, so no it isnt a blak

Too bad that was a balk
Babyboizdrummer 3 months ago
@Babyboizdrummer No it wasn't.
safe1nchrist 3 months ago
@Babyboizdrummer No it wasn't. You're allowed to fake to second base.
YoooItsRex 3 months ago
@YoooItsRex It's a balk because he moved his right foot moved forward before he made his move to 2nd
Babyboizdrummer 2 months ago
@Babyboizdrummer not a balk, he moved his right foot because he was pivoting on his left foot
ffhawk1 2 months ago
@Babyboizdrummer no he didn't.. watch again.. Its if he deceives the runner by moving leg/body forward towards home

I like how this is the most exciting thing that could happen in a baseball game .

THATS NOT A BALK?
09babyjoe 3 months ago
@09babyjoe your right its not
Luvs2splo0g 3 months ago
@09babyjoe It's not a baulk. You can fake a throw to 2nd and 3rd base but not 1st. Fake a throw to 1st base then it is a baulk.
PlatinumRomance 3 months ago
@PlatinumRomance Well you can fake throw to first if you back foot goes behind the mound, but if it goes in front, you have to throw.
RAWRDlNOSAURS 3 months ago
@RAWRDlNOSAURS You mean off of the rubber? And no you can't. You cannot fake a throw at all to first base.
PlatinumRomance 3 months ago
@PlatinumRomance If you do a pickoff move to first your right foot can either jump in front of the rubber, and if you do that you HAVE to throw the ball.
But if your right foot goes behind the rubber, you do NOT have to throw the ball.
RAWRDlNOSAURS 3 months ago
@RAWRDlNOSAURS Ok maybe we're thinking of other things. You can only fake throw to first if you first, fake throw to another (occupied) base or the runner has already committed to another base (stealing). Other than that, it is an illegal move. If i am pitching and there is a runner on first and only first base...i CANNOT fake throw to first! Damn bro.
PlatinumRomance 3 months ago
@PlatinumRomance Yes you can.. ever heard of a "31" move.. well a lefty can do it too.. fake to first then go the 3rd..
PowerLoveSoundMind1 2 months ago
@PowerLoveSoundMind1 I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to fake a pick off to first...
falloutboy7778 2 months ago
@falloutboy7778 Pretty sure you can do whatever you want as soon as your back foot comes off the rubber.. Example.. this video.. and fake to 2nd...
PowerLoveSoundMind1 2 months ago
@PowerLoveSoundMind1 Yeah but that's 2nd if i remember correctly someone did this to me to 1st and they called it a balk but that was only 1st i'm positive you can do it to 2nd and 3rd because for most pitchers its a full turn to get to 2nd and 3rd I'm not entirely sure though
falloutboy7778 2 months ago
@PowerLoveSoundMind1 no a lefty can not fake to 1st.. your stupid..

lol my team used to use this play when i played in 12 n under, always worked perfectly ;D
vega1051 3 months ago
Amazing play that required the pitcher, middle infielders, AND centerfielder give A+ acting jobs. The best part is the pitcher acting upset then causally throwing to third.

the batter throwing his bat made this whole video

@jumpfree77 it's the outfielder selling the trick play.

LOL, but the batter should have been yelling at the runner. Anyways bravo to you sir
mj23allday247 3 months ago
the batter is like " stop stop stop...dumbass "
wickedmainah524 3 months ago 81
id say its the left fielders legs. for the play to work best, the center fielder would be backing up the play behind 2nd and acting like he was chasing it down. it looks like the "legs" come from the left field direction, to me at least, as well. no way the cf could have gotten there that quickly
