My Himalayan cat (see newest video of mine) is a lovable, playful cat. We got her from a family member not too long ago and haven't attempted to give her a bath. We gently spray water on her while brushing her to get out tangles. Any tips on getting out tangles easily?
ok, cool thanks for the tips. I wouldnt be nervous, it'd be more like agervation. coco tolerates the spray bath that I would give him or the foam shampoo bath, but ya..lol. my other cat, QT. she's a ..... LOL! I tryed giving her an actual bath and she freaked out on me. scratched the hell outta me and my dad. she's got scabs all over her back and neck, where she wont stop scratching. I give her a spray bath. the foam stuff makes her sick. she doesnt like baths period. she hisses at me.
@HumorISHOT25 I use just slightly warm water to try to make him comfortable. Try to stay relaxed and not get kitty excited by you being nervous. Scruffing the kitty can also be helpful if they start squirming. Good luck.
What a sweet, patient cat - right down to blowdrying, wow! My cat would never let me do that! I loved the little leg kick at the end - so cute! And, gorgeous cat!
Jangles reminds me of my kitty Thomas when I used to bathe him. He would just sit in the sink and wait patiently for me to finnish. He was such a sweatheart.
He would never let me near him with a blowdryer though. Lol. The noise really scared him.
My cat is around a year or something, is it too late to bath him? He is the first cat I have ever had so I'm not that good with them yet. I bathed him once and he was so scared, and then he started to cry louder then I have ever heard him cry. I also bathed him another time today and he cried really loud.
I don't think you're too late. Just be gentle, make sure to keep water off his head, speak softly to try and comfort him, and keep it short to start with. Also, you might want to wait before trying the blowdryer (and then introduce it very slowly). It should get better with time. Reading some comment here, your experience doesn't sound nearly as bad as some. Good luck.
@X10LUG lol,I know exactly what your talking about. Watched my friend give a fully grown cat his first bath.
Yeah. She got 24 stitches under her eyes. Me? I was laughing in guilty pleasure.
Why? Because she said that next time she gives that cat a bath, shes tossing him in the toilet, closing the lid,and flushing repeatedly. (It was a joke, don't even bother cat abuse people.)
I have had millions of cats and if he still looks small then no but if he looks bigger then he looked when you got him then yes it is ok for you to bath him
One of my kittens was so afraid of water he hardly even drank it. Once we gave him a bath for the first time, he didnt mind water. He scratched at first, but then he just sat there, probably a little annoyed, but stopped minding. Now he gets in the shower.
We started getting our Ragdoll used to water and being bathed when we got him at 12 weeks old. Take slow baby steps and be sure to keep the water out of their face. Good luck and congratulations.
Very true about bathing them when they're young...I made the mistake of not doing this with my first two kitties, but when I adopted two feral kittens I made a point of bathing them both once a week...nowadays, they both doth protest but nothing really serious.
Thanks for sharing this video...you are a wonderful owner. I had a Himalayan Sealpoint for 16 years who was very loving and gentle. I think this is a trait of that breed. I miss my cat so very much since his demise last week...thanks again for posting this -
Thanks for your kind comments. He is a sweet little guy. He was a rescue kitty though, so I really don't know about Himi pricing. Good luck with your new kitty. I do recommend either rescue or reputable breeders.
His hair is so thick...haha, it must take a long time to get him completely wet!
My Angora Persian goes insane. Then again, she's only had one bath since I've had her; she's about 4 months old. I'd like to get her used to water and to have her behave like Jangles.
What a beautiful example of what is possible when animals are treated with respect, kindness and compassion! Thanks Jangles and Dad for being the perfect example of how we can all be in the world with our beloved animal friends. I intend that such love and respect become the norm.
This is so cute and incredible; how calm kitty is getting his bath - and a very thorough bath indeed; thanks for sharing. I adore cats as much as I can tell you do.
ahhh...that video was sooo sweet. you are such a kind person! and your cat is great! so many other people on here are splashing their cats and screaming at them and throwing water in their faces! it is horrible to watch, but your video was really cool and pleasant. it looked like jangles really loved bathtime! :)
impressive! A calm cat! I just got 2 kittens.. age 2mths! Gave them bath the other day.. leaving me all scratches! I hope they'll be calm as this kitty the next time!
Congrats on your new kitties. Trim her nails the day before (not right before, because you don't want them starting out upset). That should help with the scratching.
Start them slow. Just a little time in the sink and nothing happens first. Then some water. Then some soap. Lots of treats.
WOW! Your so lucky to have a cat like that i just tried to give my cat a bath today i carried her , I carried her down the hall way towards the bathroom SHE STRTED SCRATCHING AND WIGLING AND RAN OUT! ITS BEEN LIKE 2 YEARS SINCE WE BATHED HER I DONT KNOW HOW SHE STILL REMEMBERS
Zay- Consistancy is the trick. It's best if they're started young and then regularly reminded that it's not a big deal. It sounds like we're too late for that here.
I really recommend the kitchen sink as opposed to the bathroom. Have everything all set up, have the cat in a good mood (best time is after they've eaten and done their business).
Zay- Is your cat used to being carried around? Practice that first. Then practice carrying her to the kitchen. Nothing happens. You're just carrying her into that room. Maybe give some treats. Eventually put her into a dry sink and feed her treats while she's there. (NO water.)
I also want to comment on the fact that my sweet "Mora" looks almost identical to Jangles which I found amazing as she is registered as a "Tortie" due to her coloring on her legs. We could have a matched pair - LOL! How old is Jangles?
We got Jangles from a rescue, so we really aren't sure how old he is. We think about 7 or 8. We don't have papers but we classify him as a seal point Himi with the beautiful markings on his brow. Is Mora a Seal Tortie Point? Does she just have the markings on the legs or does her face have cream speckles & freckles?
By the way, I just saw a beautiful tortie point kitten. I did a google search for 'seal point himalayan' and the first entry (Himalayan Colors at Cozy Kitten Cattery) has amazing kitties.
I am 71 years of age and Mora will be my last cat as I don't want to get another Himalayan and not be able to care for her/him for another 20 years. I'm enjoying every moment with "Mora" as her time to leave me will be here way too soon and my heart will be broken when she leaves me.
Mora has the seal point face and markings, but her legs have the tortie markings. Mora is registered and I have papers on her, but will never enter her into any shows - she is my "treasurer" only!!!!!
I also have a Himalayan female who is now 17 years old and she has the sweetest disposition of any cat I've ever seen. All she wants is to be loved, loved and more loved-LOL. BUT - as gentle as she is, she would never let me give her a bath!
Thanks for your note, LadyThelma. I'm happy you have such a sweet kitty. I love the breed.
With bathing, it's all a matter of what they get used to. Although Jangles was a rescue kitty, he was definately groomed in his previous "life" by someone else.
I started my Ragdoll kitten out with monthly baths as a kitten and he's just as calm and relaxed as Jangles. It's worth starting them young and bathing them on a regular basis even if they don't always need it. It gets them used to it for when they do.
Wow, amazing! We gave both of my cats a bath, and my boy, Harley, has been mad at Sassy, the girl, since he got his, we think it's because he's mad at er for not saving him from the bath. It takes FOREVER to dry their fur, though!!
That's funny. I've never heard anyone else say that before, but it's very true. Jangles smells like shampoo for a day or two after baths, but after that, he's back to smelling like sugar cookies!
What are you using to bathe them? I recommend a good shampoo made specifically for cats. Also, you need to dry them pretty well. Especially if you let them out (which I don't recommend), a wet cat outside makes for a muddy cat.
X10LUG....i just use my regular shampoo n conditioners!! iv used a kitten oil 4 them ages ago and after they stunk and they r real scared of hair dryers!
I use C-Derm cat shampoo by Vedros. They come out smelling wonderful! A good toweling off should be enough. If you do use a blow dryer, be sure it's on the lowest setting for both air and heat. They have special models that are quieter than most (I used to see them in Brookstone & Sharper Image). For my cats that are used to it, I like the new ionic ones since they dry faster. Good luck.
Excellent! About dot com for cats featured your video in their email newsletter as the best example of how to bathe a cat. I used to shower my first cat 2-3 times a year to help remove shedding hair. She never minded the pulsating action, and we were done in about 15 minutes. Now I have a 6 pack of catZ, and she's too old for such foolishness. Besides, she has a reputation to maintain, and I don't want to make her look foolish, being all wet . . .
Wow, how did you train him to just sit there? He's so good! I need rubber gloves and a long jacket to protect my arms to bathe my two, and even then, they don't speak to me for a week.
my brother had a cat named elvis and he was born outside and liked to live that way so he got away last monday and my puppy and his cat where best friends now she is totally bummed she can tell that elvis is not coming back. i am very glad that we never bather him he would have totally killed us and that was why i loved him so much (my dad misses them and he does not like the idea of pets) i guess that this has turned into a goodbye to elvis well long live his wild spirit.
She's an indoor kitty as well, shes terrified of outside. She only left the house once to get spayed that's it. I agree cat's really enjoy indoors. if they were suffering they wouldnt play or relax around the house like they do.
When he walked away doing the flick walk lol priceless.
I started bathing my cat Huda from the time she was an infant a few days old with butt baths. She's a lil orphan so no mama to clean her booty. She still tries to run but shes calm just like ur cat, she starts crying a lil but thats it. one thing tho Huda never lets me finish drying her, she usually escapes by the second towel. She hides and dries herself then starts running around bouncing off the walls as if shes happy to be clean.
Thanks. I agree completely. People say that cats are missing so much by being locked inside... yeah, they're missing cars, parasites, and all the dangers outside. That's why most shelters and all reputable breeders urge people to have inside-only cats. Enjoy your kitties! Swimming... that's got to be adorable!
I have 3 cats, and they are indoor too! I think it's much safer for a cat to be indoors, and they live much longer, and don't become infested w/ parasites, ticks or fleas as much.
You need to start them when they're young. Also, it really helps to stay calm. Most people make a big deal out of it and end up freaking out their poor kitty.

my brother had a cat named elvis and he was born outside and liked to live that way so he got away last monday and my puppy and his cat where best friends now she is totally bummed she can tell that elvis is not coming back. i am very glad that we never bather him he would have totally killed us and that was why i loved him so much (my dad misses them and he does not like the idea of pets) i guess that this has turned into a goodbye to elvis well long live his wild spirit.

Hey, nice ^^
I have 3 cats, and they are indoor too! I think it's much safer for a cat to be indoors, and they live much longer, and don't become infested w/ parasites, ticks or fleas as much.
My cats like baths too ^^
One of them pretends she's swimming sometimes!

You need to start them when they're young. Also, it really helps to stay calm. Most people make a big deal out of it and end up freaking out their poor kitty.
