IKR!!! I'm so glad someone else hears the guitar perfection that this song equals...The chiming give and take between the major chords of the piano is just pure pop perfection. Paul McCartney gets a hard on when he hears this record. Difford and Tilbrook of Squeeze are like "God that's good"--- It's a shame no one ever hears this superior version where the guitar is so audible.
@Rockferry2008 u must be totally uneducated in what music is about if you think robbie williams cover of this masterpiece is better? Have you tried listening to any of this guys other songs because not only can you tell he is a very talented musician but he is truly an artist that CAN write his own songs!
OMG, I was once upon a time a big World Party fan and never realised that this was one of their songs (Egyptology never made it into my collection for some reason of fate). It all makes sense now. Major shame on me!!!
All the information people have shared here is verifiable. There's no need to be abusive towards people just because they know what they're talking about.
@Gippslander All I know is that Karl was supposed to play in Philaelphia and I think I must have bought the very first ticket that was available and was so bummed when the show was cancelled with no reason. I was looking forward to that show so much.
Karl's A&R guy worked behind Karl's back to get the song to Robbie and enlisted Guy to have Karl's band do it with Robbie without Karl's knowledge. Robbie in interviews and at awards shows at times said he wrote the song.
Karl sings his song with honest inocents, and that is what makes this song work. This song will be performed by others in the future and maybe someone will do it better, but it hasn't happend yet.
Two words: Guy Chambers. Do your research people. Guy was in World Party and was the man behind Mr Williams, hence why all his best tracks have something party-esque in them.
When he signed the big deal the record company sacked GC and the next album as a dud as a result.
But there is a direct line from RW to KW.
However, as a fan since Private Revolution, the man should be applauded everywhere he walks
ronbarbados, I saw World Party in Australia a bunch of times last September...met Karl in the Perth airport, too. I saw them five times and really liked all the shows. Superb songs. Rare for a guy with this much talent to be backing up any band (Steely Dan in this case) but he's on the way back, I guess.
egyptology was karls baby and robbie tried to steal it with escapology ...wtf...im not saying that robbie didnt do a good job with the song...but when world party brought this song out..playing live wasnt as far tech as it was when robbie brought it out...go and listen to the album version of world party and you,ll see what version is better...karl wallinger has rocked the planet for 25 years lets see if robbie lasts that long then come back and tell me...
I remember when Ehyptology came out, I think it was in Rolling Stone that I read that Karl Wallinger out did Paul McCartney when Paul had his own CD coming out the same week. No one could beat this song.
hehehhe..its a wonder your about the same age as me lisa...al the good music came from our age and before...although some of the videos of today are not to bad with the scantilly clad girls...lol...rock on
robbie williams hasnt got a patch on karl..this guy has more talent in one hand than robbie williams will ever have..ffs the record company let robbie williams sing this without his permission and also robbie even had the gall to steal world parties idea for the album..do yourself a favour robbie and go get your own ideas and stop trying to ape world party
has roobbie williams got any of his own songs. not alot of imagination huh.I saw world party in concert as lead up to steely dan and they were really great.lovely harmonies

I have to give credit to him because he wrote it and he sings while playing the piano. and no offense, but i couldn't even finish listening to this! rob's much more better! he has got more voice, this man didn't sang in tone at times.. just my opinion.
"much more better!" If you're from somewhere in Eastern Europe, it's OK. Otherwise, World Party shit all over Robbie. HAving said that, Robbiw Williams is an awesome showman, I'll not deny but these guys are freakin' classy!
Robbie williams sings the worst songs ever mostly and is not a good singer at all. The only good thing is his performance and to choose this song from the brilliant Wallinger.
Yeah I really like talent that steals from the writer while he is at death's door. So classy. Robbie Williams is something that sticks to the bottom of your shoe.
Well at least the royalties from that RW song kept Karl going while he was out of action. But yeh, it 's really annoying when most people think RW wrote this classic.
Blame the record company they screwed Karl and sold the song behind his back. Robbie did an OK song but I'd been a World Party for years and didn't know they wrote it. At least he got his money for the song in the end.
i have to give him credit for writing this song, which is absolutely amazing, no wonder people all over the world like it, but as far as live performance goes, i think i prefer robbie's version, he has a more powerful voice... or at least so it seems...
Argh, indeed. Highly underated former Waterboy. Love this and Put A Message In The Box amongst others... Good to see him recovered after long lay off.
Wow! - Great performance!

The guitar solo and lead up to this solo is a masterpiece- I remember seeing this on Sessions. That guitarist rocks just let loose in a big way!
Boy what I would do to be in that audience.
Now only if I could get a glimpse of a live feed covering the song "All Come True' from the 80's.

This is the best version of this song, better than the original recording and than Robbie's cover, of course.

Robbie Williams doesn't play piano at the same time as singing and he didn't write it either. And he does it with a big backup band too.
