This is the template on which many of the 70's soul music was based on. Every thing is there - even the music is exact. Listen to the drummer's baseline. TAT-tit-tit-tit-TAT-tit-tit-tit-TAT-tit-tit-tit-TAT-tit-tit-tit-TAT-tit-tit-tit.......... Check out how he is putting the lyric words to that beat. Notice that STRINGS are put into the backing music, too.
Well, my father was of Mennonite/Pennsylvania Dutch heritage from Lancaster, PA and I have been in love with this song since the first time I heard it (2007). Reminds me of the Rascals' Groovin. A stone groove.
Didn't hear this when it was a hit in 1968. What a super song! Those Memphis Horns are top notch. Stax/Volt rivaled Motown in the '60's for putting out great R&B/Soul music. Thanks for posting. This is how music should be recorded.
Just heard this sung by Daryl Hall on "Daryl's Place - Live" and he absolutely said this was his "favorite" song. Thanks for introducing it, Daryl. I don't know how I missed it, since I was definitely around back in the day. Just love it - a new (old) favorite!!
@recovering16 Would have to agree with Daryll. My favorite all-time love song. Its simple and straight to the point .the way soul music used to be. Clever and well-written. the Great Eddie Floyd. Highly underrated star of the Sixties.
Reminds me of my 58 ford fairlane "used of course" and the 8 track of Eddie Floyd playing under the dash . Sometime it would go off and i would gently hit it and i was back. I argued with the guy at black circle records in saint louis for a replacement, but? i just kept hitting it. ha ha ha
I love this song! The first time I heard it, my Mom was dancing, smiling - wearing a HUGE diamond ring given to her by someone she loved! ( FYI-My parents were divorced)
Loved this song so much; I was so young. This definitely brings soulful, sweet, tender memories just flowing right back through my mind and heart. 1968 I think was the year - a great year, a great song. Thanks so much for this wonderful post.
My kind of music its one the best, so many memories thanks for the soul we had back then.

Old school songs were short and sweet but delivered a message Eddie Floyd was talented like many of the other R&B singers of that era a great song

I swear that the 1960s were the best years of music for me. I could relate to the words and meanings.
This song exemplifies the meaning of SOUL music. My souls' music.
