Hi Miilie! It's Mark (your relative) from Vermont. Your soup looks yummy--got any farfel to go with it? When Bernie's father would come over for dinner every Sunday, ma would make chicken soup with the chicken legs AND FEET in the soup. My Zadie Sam would get a bowl of the feet--"feesillah"--and chew on them very contentedly. Kind of like scraping the good stuff off artichoke leaves. Lots of love, and regards from all of us to Steven and Carol.
My mom is Jewish. Do you know what it's called when you make matzah like French Toast? My mom makes it sometimes, and I'm pretty sure it's a common Jewish dish.
What's odd is that my dad's Matzo ball and chicken soup is a bit better than my mom's, and he's Christian.
It's "fried matzah." Break up matzah in quarter size pieces, soak in luke warm water. Squeeze out water. For every two pieces of matzah beat in one egg, add salt and pepper. Heat butter in fry pan, add mixture and fry until crisp. Enjoy!!
Millie! I absolutely love u! I just got done reading a book and the woman in the book is teaching her boyfriend YIDDISH and u were all I kept thinking about!! haha You're a great sport!
My mamma would buy a live chicken and take it to be shechted. Then she would schlepp it home, soak it in vasser and pluck out the pin feathers. It took forever.
When are you going to make some gefilte fish? OY..Did that ever shtunk up the house.

A matzaball is a knaidl. Two are knaidlach. Parsnip is pasternack. The yoke of an egg is the gell, the yellow.

You betcha, I don't grind my own chrain. My mother cried as she made her own chrain, the hardest part for me is opening the jar!
