The reason direct democracy works in Switzerland is that the cantons are small and independent. If we split the US into thousands of independent counties/parishes that all vote on local issues then it would work. Get rid of the Nation state,and replace it with thousands of independent jurisdictions, and Gerald's idea would be perfect.
