True, but then again, it depends on how you define "making it." These guys have so much cred in the rock world it's ridiculous, they're all really accomplished musicians, and they have a really large and devoted fan base. I don't think they were ever after commercial success.

And I just discovered Built to Spill, I guess I never checked them out before. I can definitely see how they influenced Modest Mouse. And I love both bands.

You're way off. Built to Spill released their first major album in 1997, whereas Modest Mouse released theirs in 200...Built to Spill was just wayy before it's time and got lost in the grunge era...but this is one of the most badass bands ever. If you get the chance to see them live, do it. Second best live performance I've ever seen.
