A tongue depressor or popsicle stick works wonders when applying the foil tape to smooth it down along the sides and over the edges...

Why don't you use a foiler? How about a fid to burnish?

I agree about the fid-after smoothing the edges down, you really need to burnish it to make sure it adheres properly.
