Open Solaris is controlled by Sun Microsystems. Solaris OS is under license from SCO (Novell). Open Solaris is trying to be like BSD.
If only these Trademarks and Copyrights would go away, maybe, there would be something out there that's better than Windows or Mac OS X.
Liberate Unix!
Free BSD and Linux are liberated form of Unix. It's the best we can do for now. The SOBs who created the Computer Hype are the same people who are holding up the traffic.
@zowlyfon NOT true. Linux is not based off of Unix. Linux is a stand alone OS. It was developed by a man in Finland during the time of Unix so he used similar commands and low level features like Unix. Please research before telling people information.
@alexandrius40 70% of servers in most sectors if you discount gaming servers. All functional backbone DNS servers, most enterprise instances, and almost all large scale scientific applications use UNIX to do the real computation.
BSD is derived from AT&T SysV source tapes dating back to 1976 when William Joy was at UC Berkeley California. It is more UNIX than Sun Solaris or Linux is even. Solaris is UNIX certified, as is Mac OS X 10.5. Linux is barely able to standardize upon the freely available open specifications such as POSIX and LSB has failed. Linux is based on the model of UNIX, but has borrowed many ideas from BSD and code as well due to BSD having a more free license in terms of integration.
linux isnt unix people!

It is still not Unix, it is just Unix-like.
Unix is trademarked by The Open Group..
neonpulse 3 years ago
does it even matter? as long as it works and is rock solid.
bam88 3 years ago
Yes it matters to the Open Group because they like to call the non SUS/POSIX certified(but fully compatible) Unix-like.
In my humble opinion the Open Group are a bunch of assholes abusing the UNIX trademark.

i heard that u can install unix and windows xp+vista at once, is it true?
and do u recommend it instead of the XP Professional ?
flamexXxstrings 3 years ago
It is possible... although not practical unless you are using something that really cannot be ported (used) on another OS...
If you have an older machine (1+ years old) I would still reccomend XP. Especially with SP3 out it is as stable as it's ever going to get.
If you have a new PC then go with Vista...
tasmandevil0811 3 years ago
i really hate vista, it has so many things wrong in it, ill probably wait 'til they fix all the bugs
