  • I'm going to my first western lesson on the 15th! I'm so excited!

  • Also, western pleasure is not lazy. You have to still get the horse into the bridle, keep him in a frame, and move well. A lope shouldnt make the horse look lame. They may rock their head up and down a little with the movement, but its not lameness. They also have extended jog.

  • It's not about keeping your heels down, contrary to belief. Its about keeping the weight down through your legs into the stirrups. You should feel relaxed and like your legs are carrying all of your weight in them. This will keep you deeper in the seat and more stable.

  • im riding Thursday at Hop Island!

  • @imsomethingwicked im not getting upset im just saying. I would love to learn english eventually though. :)

  • @imsomethingwicked for me the only option i have is western :p

  • ok i ride western and i love it im on the heavy side and its more easy and not all the gaits are slow i have a twh and he does western and he has fast gaits and i think you did vary well for it being your frist time i love western and i think its more about having fun and being relaxed and english you get to have fun and be grace ful the same with western i think its a good thing if you like both

  • @imsomethingwicked those comments are kinda offending to western riders i mean you

can feel that way about western riding i feel the same way about english but you dont need to be rude about it!!!!!

  • @laughterbuddies0 I agree I tried riding westren for the first time monday and its so much easier for me, much calmer

  • @imsomethingwicked and yes you are being snooty. If you didn't mean to offend anyone then don't leave mean comments

  • @imsomethingwicked If you don't like western okay, you don't have to make fun of it and make people who do ride western feel badly. Leave you snide, snooty comments on some english video

  • @etpenusee: Yes, you're right.

  • I ride western (not by choice) but in western isn't a canter called a lope? At least the way I learned it is.

  • stay western no english'

  • ... sure there are major differences, but riding is riding, but it's really your choice on what you like/do. personally i like western more for beginners because the saddle feels safer than an english [at least to me anyway]. i can think of hundreds of times where a horn has come in handy where i probably would've fallen off had i been in an english saddle [once being recently on the trails when a dog spooked my horse as we were cantering up a steep hill] anywho, my 'rant' is done. happy riding!

  • that horse's trot is amazing! I wish that I could ride a horse like that, all the horses I have ever ridden have had regular to super big trots[one of the horses i currently ride. his canter is so much better than another horse i ride but his trot is deadly] and not being mean toward other commenters, but western isn't just slow gaits and laziness, you ever seen barrel races?...

  • @imsomethingwicked Yea, now I'm back to doing English. I felt the same way.

  • I've been riding for 5 years english and then a year nothing, now I'm riding western for a few weeks as well and I like it so much more as English! :D

  • the advice on keeping your heels down is the probably the most important safety one. I see people commenting on helmets all the time (nothing wrong with them) but miss the heels. if you fall your protected for one fall with a helmet but if your foot slips into the stirup your dragged till the horse stops. god only knows how much damage from that. how is the riding going?

  • how do you go from english to western?! haha I ride english and whenever i get on a western horse i always ask them to go to fast cause i think they are going to stop :) its not always as easy as it looks(atleast for me it isnt lol)

  • @YawningDiamond it depends on the horse.

  • try and keep your hands low and loose and stay away from the saddle horn... but really good time for your first time riding. try and sit loosed and relaxed in the saddle, he looks like he has a rocking canter so just sit deep in the saddle your attepting to post. but stays down and back remains loose.

  • gotta get that head leveled but out of all great job

  • your a good rider hahah. i was the same way i rode english for about 3-4 years and then i switched to western (: and i want to do western pleasure also but i barrel race...

  • Wow, this looks amazing. I do canter myself, but english. Western pleasure just looks so mch more relaxed and calm and OH MHY GHOD I CANT WAIT TILL WEDNSDAY! Im gonna have my first western pleasure lesson. I cant wait to just sit that canter as if im on a rocking- couch!

  • that's funny. I'm riding on Wednesday as well... Lol.

  • when the lady is showing you how to canter more western like, i couldnt help but laugh when she was doing the hips thing, even though i know that is how your supposed to do it. like scooping ice cream

  • @gunnerboy1000 : I know, right? At first I was just like, "Are you kidding me?" But now I'm used to it.

Note to self: Post new Western Riding lesson video in early February, after midterms...

  • That was really good for your first time riding western. When your cantering it helps to keep your heels down really far. My horse has a rocking horse canter sometimes and when my heels are down really far its a lot easier to stay ballenced. Good job though! :-D

  • @HorseyQueen120 Thank you. Even when I did English, keeping my heels down was hard for me. I'm thinking about doing some English from time to time, just so that I don't lose all of my memories of it.

  • @narutohorsegirl Maybe you could try lengthening your stirrups a bit? I used to struggle a lot to keep heels down and i thought longer stirrups would make it worse, but it helped heaps. I used to feel less secure with them longer but if you gradually lengthen them just a hole at a time it makes your seat and legs much more secure!

  • @HorseyQueen120 cantering is english loping is the western term. I'd love it if they would just make the terms all the same. I alway's have to ask my wife to translate.

  • I love the dog.

  • lol, I do too! She's a Bernese Mountain Dog named Molly.

  • i have been riding english for 4 or 5 years but never cantered western. my horse perfers western so me and my friend are going to canter up in the feilds. im going to be western and shes going to be english. i havent cantered my horse in a REALLY long time. i hope i dont die lol. cuz my horse is super lazy. BUT she always has to be first. and my friends horse is a retired race horse. so lol. and hopefully it will come to my benefit that my horse is lazy =P and we have to cross a creek. yay =/

  • Do westurn riders jump?

  • @xdreampony sometimes but imagine coming forward and hitting the horn... its not alll that comforatable. but no we normaly dont i only did cause we where trying to get away from a pissed off bull.......

  • You look good, but...

You need to keep your shoulders back heels down and foward towards the horses head, and keep you hand more forward, you look great otherwise, just trust me, I have won lots of ribbons from western pleasure! ^^

  • i love western riding sooooooooooo much i ride at papago stables i am thinking about trying english after i am done learing how to do i really fast canter on a western saddle

  • some "creative critisime" lol is in the video do you mean contesting or gymkanna?not rodeo?and why re you riding english now?and not western

  • Or maybe she ment rodeo... cause there is such a thing you know

  • @Roostersgirlryan Yep, I know. But no, she didn't.

  • I was reading one of your comments and I also relized about 6 months ago that jumping wasn't my sport either I wanted to start western lessons. i did ride western at some point but i was to young to remember and i cant believe that i didnt go on in western riding, so im trying to decide if i want to continue english or go on with western. At the moment im not riding b/c im trying to find a barn around my area theat teaches western. So im just simply asking if you like english or western better?

  • awesome job! im switching to western soon after riding for 6 years of both english and western=)

  • Congratualations and good luck.

  • good job and this is your first time riding western? 1 tip is keep your hand down a little more so its just barely resting on the saddle pad:) but thats really all there is to say!

  • Thank you. Yes that was my first time riding Westrn. I have gotten so much better since. I need to post a more current video

  • Whats this farm called...oh i know it....its right by tinker nature center....ahhhh. I almost started lessoning there i should know this!!

  • omg, you know it? Awesome!! I love it here. It is called Hickory Creek. I swear I ride much better now. I have a lesson tomorrow that I will record and upload. Be on the lookout for it late tomorrow or early the next day. Thanks for commenting.

  • thats it!! haha i ride at a barn called hickory spring so i can never think of hickory creek...lol.

    Ok i will =]]

Didnt you used to ride at lehmans..

  • yes, i used to ride at lehmans. Where is hickory springs?

  • you didnt like it?

To tell you the truth i dont love it either haha, but its so close to my house we have just stayed lol.

Its a private welsh pony show barn in honeyoe falls, it isnt open for lessons, i exersize and show ponies for the owners.

  • What made you want to change from english to western?

Which one is harder? Looks like you're doing a good job! I don't really know very much about western, though. I've been riding English for almost 3 years now.
