Mondale absolutely hated the space program, and in the worse time to criticize it, in the Mid-80's when the shuttle was at its prime. Reagan loved the space program and gave one of the best speeches ever given by a president when Challenger happened.

Reagan is the one who gave the order to override the recommendations of the engineers who said the space shuttle Challenger should not be launched the morning of January 28, 1986 because the sealing o-rings would not work in the cold weather.

Yeah, it sounds like familiar scaremongering. The Soviet Union would have collapsed with or without Reagan. It was his luck that they in Gorbachev had a leader who didn't decide to take the rest of the world down with the USSR. To this day the foreign policy of the US is to contain Russia and place troops close to it's border via the NATO expansion. But what happens if the Russians one day don't like to be pushed around anymore? Reagan was playing Russian roulette with the world.
