@B0ULLIE I give stupid answers to stupid questions, so sorry if that offends you. @vwestlifeI actually looked at ACDCNut55's comment and found the answer to my question... A question which was NOT being answered elsewhere, but that "Use Google" thing annoys me and I'll make no apologies for my previous statement because it's true.
People are a usable and valuable resource, and upon finding no luck using a search engine I used people, and asking for help is by no means a stupid question but I suppose it's all relative. Btw, Stupid question+Stupid answer=No one getting anywher
@vwestlife In this review, you said the cartridge wasn't the best. this Christmas, I decided to replace my old 70's console, so I bought this turntable. I noticed that it wasn't packaged with the same cartridge. After reading the specifications, it turns out that it was actually an AT95E, which seems to have pretty favorable reviews. I guess that AT listened to what the people had to say.
@ACDCNut55 Thanks for letting me know. It turns out, Audio-Technica has a note on their web site saying "Please note: As of September 2011, the AT-LP120-USB includes the AT95E cartridge, replacing the ATP-2XN cartridge."
@vwestlife And while playing my original 1965 stereo mix of Rubber Soul, which is known for it's extreme separation, I noticed that no sounds were on the wrong channels. The vocals on the right, Instruments on the left, just like I remember. And the bass seems decent to me as well.
I have a Gemini DJ turntable which except for a digital pitch adjustment is basically the same with the same tone arm. I bought an Ortofon DJ cartridge with it which works fine but tracks at a min of 3 grams like yours. I tried a HQ Grado cart which tracks at 1.5 - 2 grams tops but the Gemini
tone arm wasn't compliant. It kept skipping. The DJ tone arms on these units aren't made for light tracking with higher quality cartridges. Have you tried a better cart & what were the results?
I've got this one for playing 78s. It's a wonderful machine. Output is a bit high though, which I must try to attenuate at some point. My version doesn't have switch for the pre-amp or USB out :-(
I ordered a Ortofon 2m Red for mine, I'm still waiting for it. I love this turntable, it's my first quality one, -I threw out my sony300usb because it was playing at 29 speed instead of 33. Why don't you like using a dust cover? My record would be covered in cat hair in an hour that way. What is the best affordable receiver in your opinion? Mine is a inexpensive Onkyo, ~I can't afford an upgrade yet, but I was wondering what would bring out the sound in my Ortofon 2M Red needle the best.
Nice detailed video. I run a archive studio and though I do not own, one, I commend A/T for bring a good quality mult-purpose turntable to the market. If you are looking for a lighter tracking cartridge with more of a HiFi appeal, you may want to consider the Grado Prestige series. Those heavier tracking "DJ" cartridges (like the supplied one) have a thicker cantilever which is necessary for back cueing, but limits their bandwidth a bit. Nice Video and Enjoy The Turntable!
@8Jome A-T sells it as a "DJ" turntable, so it should be suitable for that. Just make sure you are using a phono cartridge and stylus that is specifically built for "scratching".
@OozoO09 The A-T is about $300 cheaper than the Technics, and you get what you pay for. It is not as solidly built as the Technics, but I specifically wanted the 78 RPM speed, which the Technics doesn't have.
@OozoO09 The Technics SL-1200 series has been around since the 1970s, while the A-T has only been in production for a few years now, so it's too early to say.
@OozoO09 Not exactly. The Audio-Technica is a visual clone to the Technics, But the Technics is better quality. The A-T is made of a plastic shell, while the Technics is nice metal. Compared to the A-T, the Technics is better in the area of Wow and flutter, etc. The Audio-Technica version is by no means bad, but it's cheaper quality, and you do get what you pay for.. Com
@vwestlife 78 RPM is possible with an SL-1200, but it has to be sent to KABUSA. I'd definitely prefer the Technics to the Audio-Technica, shame the SL-1200 is no longer in production :(
When you try the Stanton head shell you have to align the the cartridge for a 's' tone arm. I see you still had the cartridge angled as for a 'straight arm'. Just a small point, but I assume you would have known that. Regards, hifigeek
@hifigeek009 No, I had the Stanton cartridge on straight. For some reason Stanton made its mounting screws at an angle, so that's why it looks like it's turned to one side, even when it is mounted perfectly straight.
oh my gosh its so pretty, Im gonna buy my self one for Xmas Im an audio phile and I still have my klh model 24 stereo from like 1968 its time for me to get some thing new.oh my gosh gotta have it gotta have it!!!!
@vwestlife: If i use a phono box instead of the internal pre amp, would i be able to obtain a "better/louder" sound? Not that the sound is not good with the pre amp, but i noticed that i need to crank it up a bit more as it is not as loud as a CD.
@PhilRockabill The output loudness depends on the output voltage of the phono cartridge you use. "DJ" cartridges have a higher output voltage, and thus provide a louder output level. But vinyl is more dynamic than CDs, so even with a DJ cartridge, you may notice that the level is not as loud as today's excessively compressed and clipped CDs.
Guys, this is a very nice turntable for the price. I bought it after watching this video as i was hesitating between the LP120 and the Stanton. I'm glad i bought this one.
It is really easy to use and the good thing about it is that it can connect to ANY home receiver since it's got his own pre amp. Just make sure you upgrade the cartridge for a better one (ie: 1.5 gr tracking instead of 3 like the original one). Hope you all enjoy.
I've just bought this baby &it'll be my first turntable in nearly ten years.. I have alot of collectable / 180g vinyl &I really don't want to be using a felt mat. Any recommendations? What do you think to using an acrylic mat? Cheers!
You said it has a pre-amp. So literally, I should be able to connect it to a typical RCA input in the back of most home units to play records without the need of a DJ mixer, or additional amp. Correct?
I bought the LP120 last week and connected it via USB to my laptop running Windows Vista. I converted about 25 LPs to MP3, but was dismayed to find on the last one (Led Zeppelin II) that it wouldn't pick up Page's guitar solo on 'Whole Lotta Love.' That song has very a distinct differentiation of sound between the left and right channels. Now I'm wondering what else may be missing from the other albums.
I checked it with a stereo receiver and the guitar solo comes in loud and clear. Help!
@rlgotting check the advanced properties of the recording device in your computer's audio settings. This happened to me with another piece of equipment, and it turned out that the USB audio device gets set to 1-channel, for some strange reason. So basically you end up with a mono recording of only the left or right channel. Set it to 2 channel, 16 bit, 41000 Hz, and you should be all set.
HELP PLEASE! I bought this turntable & a Shure M97xe cartridge, set it up w/ the new cartridge and it worked. Then i switched back to the stock cartridge for a while.Upon switching back to the M97xe it played flawless records horribly scratchily and skipped often.I tried setting the weight of the tone arm from optimal weight to max weight several times. Finally in frustration I turned the weight up about 2g and that solved the problem. what can i do to get it to work at normal tracking weight
I just bought one of these for 200 bucks on amazon, a steal if say so myself. I bought a really cheap one a while back and instantly RMA'd it. this thing sounds great even over youtube, hope it sounds even better in my house! thanks for the great review
I watched the video, then went to Amazon and purchased this excellent turntable. When it arrived I again watched this video and then one from the manufacture on set up. I really recommend the you review both as the manufactures video give all the detail you will need to set up the tone arm. After maybe 45minutes at most to set the unit up I played a favorite record and WOW Best sound ever heard. 204.00 total damage is like so cool so glad I did the. USB is just another advantage.
@MickyFig It is a regular pitch control, so the pitch will change as you slow down or speed up the record. It uses RCA outputs and has a built-in preamp.
Last remark: Recording from the PL120 will not work if you have some video recording software installed and use a video converter such as a ‘vidbox’. You will have to temporarily disconnect/unplug the video converter. I have had great success using honestech Audio Recorder 2.0. Simple. Easy. Affordable.
Near the variable speed slider, keep a 2 X 3 inch piece of white paper laying there to help visually check the needle for cleanliness. I also keep a small, cheap paint brush or a small soft, make-up brush there to regularly wipe the needle.
Get an inexpensive level. It’s important to keep the table level. Check level front to back and then side to side on the turntable itself.
I record frequently with the AT PL120. For record cleaning, use a soft, velvet-like record cleaner. Dampen it using 91% Isopropyl alcohol (so it won’t gum the grooves). 1 pint lasts forever. Gently wipe rotating surface as it turns. Wait for the alcohol to dry before playing. For dirty records, put the record on a cloth towel and wipe it with the cleaner. Go only with the grooves. Don’t be afraid to focus on the grudgy area…just don’t ruin it. Let record dry or it will gum up needle.
@vwestlife I posted this comment just before I saw the bit where you explained and showed it. However now that I have your attention and seem to really rather dedicated to your audio equipment and I have the need to clean some really rather dirty vinyl's how do you do it?
@fattymattyweasel Really the only cleaning of my records that I do is wiping the dust off with my sleeve! But if you need something better than that, there are plenty of videos on YouTube with people demonstrating their own favorite methods of cleaning vinyl.
@vwestlife Yeah the vinyl's I have are the all of the Beatles and alot of john lennon that have been water damaged but thankfully are not warped but they do have mould on them.
@vwestlife Rather coincidently i have just bought one of these and there is a change and it no longer comes with a cartridge. Just thought you should add that in the description.
@fattymattyweasel Are you sure you don't mean the AT-LP240? I know that one does not come with a cartridge. Audio-Technica still lists the AT-LP120 as coming with a "Headshell/cartridge (ATP-2)" on their web site.
Cartridge recs: Shure MX97XE, Stanton 681 -EEE, Ortofon 2M Red, Ortofon 2M Blue. I have the 2M Blue. I had the original 681-EEES model, which was excellent.
The Shure and the Ortofon 2M Red are both highly recommended by many buget conscious audiophiles. The 2M Blue has slightly better bass, definition and separation.
For those who have asked, The name of the track played is called "South Of The Border" by Arthur Murray. The name of the album is called "The Arthur Murray Dance Album" on the Reader's Digest label which is now out of print and almost impossible to find. I know because I tried locating a copy on LP , 8 Track , Cassette and even CD , but to no avail.
Does this turntable have RCA cable outputs and ground wire connections as well? I'm planning to buy 2 of these on eBay in the next couple of months. I already have a DJ mixer and amplifier as well as my Technics 1200s, but looking to downgrade.
Thank you for posting this helpful video on this turntable. I'm in the market to buy one and I think I'm going with this one. Also, thank you for the information on the stylus. I remember the styluses my Dad always bought for his Pioneer turntable growing up and back then he'd drop anywhere from $50 to $150 on one - always had to have the "diamond head" stylus. So, your information really helped.
Can't wait to get mine in the mail. Great find on the Arthur Murray tracks as well.
@write99999 I ended up keeping the Audio-Technica cartridge that comes with it. You can get a 78 RPM stylus for $25 on eBay. Just look up "ATPN2 78rpm" (without the quotes).
For those of you who either don't need or don't want the USB option, there is the AT-PL120 (the USB model is the AT-LP120). I have the AT-PL120 (no USB) and I really like it. Sure, it's a knock-off of the Technics SL-1200, but at least AT is smart enough to know what to copy!!!
Great video and turntable; plus an interesting choice of demo record ( not something we usually expect ). I also love turntables; they me be less convenient than CD players but there's something about them.................regards.
Notice on your Stanton cartridge, it's alignment is wrong, it's alignment was set for a straight tone arm as the screws are set at a angle, but on a S-ARM screws be parallel to each other, you will need a protractor to set the alignment, sure sound better once you set it, hope this helps.
@RetroPCDOS I did align the cartridge properly. If you look again you'll see that the cartridge itself is straight while the screws are at an angle. That's just how they designed it, because the Stanton turntable used a straight tonearm instead of an S-shaped one. It looks wrong, but that is the correct alignment for this turntable.
@SpadesHeart I don't know why so many people think this, but a turntable does not hook up directly to speakers! It is an audio component designed to work as part of a stereo system, including a separate amplifier or receiver.
@vwestlife its the outputs, people see em and think they can hook them in right away. I have a really old stereo mixer and tried to hook it into that to see if it had any response (its one of the ones with the meters) but I couldn't even get something there. Do I need an amp just to get it to register at all anywhere?
@SpadesHeart This turntable will with work either the aux/line level or phono level inputs of a DJ mixer, depending if you have its built-in preamp turned on or off, respectively.
@vwestlife then I don't really know what the problem is... I've tried everything I can think of just to get a signal. I'm starting to think the mixer just can't play things this new, even if its an old technology.. The player itself works fine. It's strange, it really doesn't have a built in speaker but produces the music at a low volume... I don't know much about turntables obviously haha
@vwestlife alright so I'm going to conclude the mixer is the issue then. I can probably sell it on ebay for 20 bucks to someone that can make use of it.
Your awesome video is what actually inspired me to purchase this turntable(being a vinyl-audiophile for many decades, myself). It is a pleasure to use. I did own the Technics 1200(M3D) at one time(sold it for financial reasons years ago)...When I saw what the new Technics were going for(and now Panasonic has pulled the plug on the 1200), I was shocked. The prices of the remaining stock have reached stratospheric heights! This one is absolutely a great budget-minded alternative with VERY GOOD sound!
@mitrooper If you bought it new, then the cartridge _is_ included. Look through the packaging material again -- I believe it's tucked into one of the styrofoam blocks. Hopefully you didn't throw it out!!
can someone help me??? when i play my record, for some reasonit skips a lot in the begining and end of the record, but not in the middle portions. Im trying to fix the problem and have only one idea but im not sure if the record is suppose todo this: when i play a record, the needle is not the only part touch the record. The plastic base of the needle also touches the record. I was wondering if it is suppose to do that or not?
@mridontknow63 Are you using the AT-LP120 or some other turntable? The stylus (needle tip) itself is absolutely the only thing that should be touching the record. Make sure your tracking force is set correctly and that your stylus is installed properly.
Can anyone objectively compare this turntable to the Sony PSLX350H for me? I was planning to buy this but on Amazon they have the 2 tables, offered with the same replacement cartridge (Shure M97xE, which was recommended by a pro reviewer), but the Sony is FAR less than the AT or than its suggested retail. If the Sony would essentially be the same as this (once they both have the same replacement cartridge) i would be inclined to buy the Sony (though i like the look of this better) PLEASE HELP!
@57250tr I owned this Sony model for awhile and got rid of it!---It may look hefty and expensive appearance-wise(it, too, mimics the Technics 1210 look)---but performance-wise, up against the Audio Technica, it pales in comparison with regards to the sound and mechanical quality.I also was not crazy about it being belt-driven( I could hear speed fluctuations/wow&flutter,especially when playing music with piano solos).Sony has not made a decent turntable in ages(since the 70's and early 80's).
@vinylspinner3345 Thanks a lot for your input. I managed to find one review on the internet that agreed with everything you said. I have a lesser-model Sony turntable and i suspected that this one would not be much nicer. I have since ordered the Audio Technica, I plan to set it up tomorrow.
@57250tr No prob. You're welcome. Like I said, the AT LP-120 is no Technics, BUT you will get some great sound and bang for your buck...The number one reason I bought it, is because it plays 78 rpm vintage discs(of which I have a few)---I'm STILL kicking myself for selling my Technics 1200 years ago, though(but needed the money back then)...I should have kept it (sigh)---prices have skyrocketed(used or new old stock) since production has ceased on those, lol.
@vinylspinner3345 Ahh that's a shame you had to sell it. One more question, as i'm relatively new to this. I read somewhere that it's better for both the record and the stylus if you lay the stylus down where you want it (at the beginning of the record or wherever) an THEN start spinning the record, what's your take on this? It seemed odd to me so I thought I'd ask.
@57250tr The placing of the needle on the vinyl and then activating play (to me) sounds more like a dj thing for cueing up a song. I never do that. I prefer having the record already rotating as the cueing mechanism on the AT LP-120 is VERY gentle on records and eases the cartridge and stylus slowly down into the groove. Even on my Technics I never did put the 'needle' on first(never know what can happen---i.e.; you or someone,by accident, bump into the 'table and ruin your needle)...
I notice that Audio Technica employs full manual operation for the tone arm on this model and the model above it, with full automatic operation on the 2 models below it. Is there a reason that the more advanced models are manual? I'm looking to buy this turntable because it comes highly recommended but i wanted something with automatic operation. If it's more common for higher grade players to use manual than i'll remove that factor from my considerations, please let me know
@vwestlife I'm looking for a turntable of this quality and this model was highly recommended in a newspaper article i read. I'm not a DJ, just interested in a higher quality home stereo system. I'm assuming that this would serve my purposes well despite being for DJs, am I correct?
@vwestlife also, i mentioned that i originally wanted something with an automatic tone arm. what are your thoughts on this, do you have a preference and are there advantages/disadvantages to either one besides the obvious? sorry for all the questions but i want to be sure before making any purchases.
the audio technica at lp 120 is similar to a technics sl 1200 mark 2, not a clone. however it is a clone of, now pay attention, a citronic pd 2 turntable.
vwestlife, I have a set of Audio Technicas and I love them, but I just upgraded to the Technics 1200mk pair; Im going to keep my AT's for backup but I have one question, will the AT"s support a Shure mm47 cartridge, just wanna know before I decide to buy them and replace the needles I already have on here. Thanks in advance for the response. By the way, your posts on this product are very informative!
@BIGSABMUSIC As long as the main body (chassis) is the same, it is a clone. Many of the cheaper ones leave off some of the extra features like the pop-up stylus target light, but you can still see the outline of where that part was supposed to go. They probably just tell the factory in China which features to include, whether to paint it silver or black, and what brand name to put on it.
does panasonic or technics work with audio technica?....or atleast someone who use to work with technics help build this turntable...cause it looks exactly like a technics 1200!
@BIGSABMUSIC No, this is just a Chinese-made imitation of the Technics SL-1200. There are many different brands and variations of these 1200 clones. Audio Technica is just one of the more famous ones, and the only one that I've seen with 78 RPM speed.
@BIGSABMUSIC I've seen others by American Audio, Sherwood, and even Sony (the PS-LX350H). However, many of these clones are only belt-drive, not direct-drive.
you need to upgrade your computer. it does not matter if it works you need to upgrade at some point... thats just disgusting. dont be like PERFECT LOOK and have a 20 year old computer or other business's that dont buy new computers . I dont know you but now i think less of you.
@titanicdbog First of all, who asked you? And secondly, the computer behind the turntable is not my main one anymore; I have a much newer desktop PC and ThinkPad. But even if it was, so what? Computers are like cars: as long as it still runs well and serves all your needs, then there is no logical reason to buy a new one.
@vwestlife Dont you sass me young man. LOL :P thats a nice turntable I ordered the same one off amazon yesterday for $200 cant wait. I have a crappy SONY USB turntable I got early 2010 it SUCKS! and the USB does not even work.
@titanicdbog , dude your a tard, just go away and comment on some more alien videos with the rest of the tards of our world, his computer is fine and you know nothing.
Hey I'm having a little trouble locating a new needle/cartridge for this turntable.
Can anyone lend me a hand?

@vwestlife: If i use a phono box instead of the internal pre amp, would i be able to obtain a "better/louder" sound? Not that the sound is not good with the pre amp, but i noticed that i need to crank it up a bit more as it is not as loud as a CD.
PhilRockabill 2 months ago
@PhilRockabill The output loudness depends on the output voltage of the phono cartridge you use. "DJ" cartridges have a higher output voltage, and thus provide a louder output level. But vinyl is more dynamic than CDs, so even with a DJ cartridge, you may notice that the level is not as loud as today's excessively compressed and clipped CDs.
vwestlife 2 months ago
@vwestlife Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. So i'll keep using the internal pre amp as it satisfied my needs...for now! :)

Hi people!
I've just bought this baby &it'll be my first turntable in nearly ten years.. I have alot of collectable / 180g vinyl &I really don't want to be using a felt mat. Any recommendations? What do you think to using an acrylic mat? Cheers!
artofmetamorphosis 3 months ago

Help!
rlgotting 3 months ago
@rlgotting Did you try asking Audio-Technica support? I don't use the USB function of mine at all, so I can't help you there.
vwestlife 3 months ago
@vwestlife No I didn't call support. I was able to get it to work well on my desktop that runs Windows XP.
rlgotting 3 months ago

@57250tr That sounds like a problem with the Shure cartridge, not with the turntable. Try asking Shure for help.

I really recommend the you review both as the manufactures video give all the detail you will need to set up the tone arm. After maybe 45minutes at most to set the unit up I played a favorite record and WOW Best sound ever heard. 204.00 total damage is like so cool so glad I did the. USB is just another advantage.

I have a couple of questions about this turntable as I have my purchase narrowed down to either this one or a Stanton T-92.
Does the pitch control(s) allow you to slow down, or speed up the playing speed without affecting the actual pitch? The Stanton will allow for this.
Also, is there rca outputs on this turntable to hook up to a stereo receiver?
Thanks for the great review!
MickyFig 5 months ago
@MickyFig It is a regular pitch control, so the pitch will change as you slow down or speed up the record. It uses RCA outputs and has a built-in preamp.
vwestlife 5 months ago
Last remark: Recording from the PL120 will not work if you have some video recording software installed and use a video converter such as a ‘vidbox’. You will have to temporarily disconnect/unplug the video converter. I have had great success using honestech Audio Recorder 2.0. Simple. Easy. Affordable.
xskyraiderx 6 months ago
Near the variable speed slider, keep a 2 X 3 inch piece of white paper laying there to help visually check the needle for cleanliness. I also keep a small, cheap paint brush or a small soft, make-up brush there to regularly wipe the needle.
Get an inexpensive level. It’s important to keep the table level. Check level front to back and then side to side on the turntable itself.
xskyraiderx 6 months ago
I record frequently with the AT PL120. For record cleaning, use a soft, velvet-like record cleaner. Dampen it using 91% Isopropyl alcohol (so it won’t gum the grooves). 1 pint lasts forever. Gently wipe rotating surface as it turns. Wait for the alcohol to dry before playing. For dirty records, put the record on a cloth towel and wipe it with the cleaner. Go only with the grooves. Don’t be afraid to focus on the grudgy area…just don’t ruin it. Let record dry or it will gum up needle.

Splitskirts 9 months ago
Notice on your Stanton cartridge, it's alignment is wrong, it's alignment was set for a straight tone arm as the screws are set at a angle, but on a S-ARM screws be parallel to each other, you will need a protractor to set the alignment, sure sound better once you set it, hope this helps.
RetroPCDOS 9 months ago
@RetroPCDOS I did align the cartridge properly. If you look again you'll see that the cartridge itself is straight while the screws are at an angle. That's just how they designed it, because the Stanton turntable used a straight tonearm instead of an S-shaped one. It looks wrong, but that is the correct alignment for this turntable.
vwestlife 9 months ago
I've bought a USB turntable, rather cheap but none the less, I was just wondering how to hook it up to speakers... i'm finding it rather difficult
SpadesHeart 9 months ago
@SpadesHeart I don't know why so many people think this, but a turntable does not hook up directly to speakers! It is an audio component designed to work as part of a stereo system, including a separate amplifier or receiver.
vwestlife 9 months ago
@vwestlife its the outputs, people see em and think they can hook them in right away. I have a really old stereo mixer and tried to hook it into that to see if it had any response (its one of the ones with the meters) but I couldn't even get something there. Do I need an amp just to get it to register at all anywhere?
SpadesHeart 9 months ago
@SpadesHeart This turntable will with work either the aux/line level or phono level inputs of a DJ mixer, depending if you have its built-in preamp turned on or off, respectively.
vwestlife 9 months ago
@vwestlife then I don't really know what the problem is... I've tried everything I can think of just to get a signal. I'm starting to think the mixer just can't play things this new, even if its an old technology.. The player itself works fine. It's strange, it really doesn't have a built in speaker but produces the music at a low volume... I don't know much about turntables obviously haha
SpadesHeart 9 months ago
@SpadesHeart The needle (stylus) vibrating in the groove of the record is what makes the faint sound.
vwestlife 9 months ago
@vwestlife alright so I'm going to conclude the mixer is the issue then. I can probably sell it on ebay for 20 bucks to someone that can make use of it.

Your awesome video is what actually inspired me to purchase this turntable(being a vinyl-audiophile for many decades, myself). It is a pleasure to use. mridontknow63 9 months ago

57250tr 10 months ago
@57250tr I owned this Sony model for awhile and got rid of it!---It may look hefty and expensive appearance-wise(it, too, mimics the Technics 1210 look)---but performance-wise, up against the Audio Technica, it pales in comparison with regards to the sound and mechanical quality.I also was not crazy about it being belt-driven( I could hear speed fluctuations/wow&flutter,especially when playing music with piano solos).Sony has not made a decent turntable in ages(since the 70's and early 80's).
vinylspinner3345 9 months ago
@vinylspinner3345 Thanks a lot for your input. I managed to find one review on the internet that agreed with everything you said. I have a lesser-model Sony turntable and i suspected that this one would not be much nicer. I have since ordered the Audio Technica, I plan to set it up tomorrow.
57250tr 9 months ago
@57250tr No prob. You're welcome. Like I said, the AT LP-120 is no Technics, BUT you will get some great sound and bang for your buck...The number one reason I bought it, is because it plays 78 rpm vintage discs(of which I have a few)---I'm STILL kicking myself for selling my Technics 1200 years ago, though(but needed the money back then)...I should have kept it (sigh)---prices have skyrocketed(used or new old stock) since production has ceased on those, lol.
vinylspinner3345 9 months ago
@vinylspinner3345 Ahh that's a shame you had to sell it. One more question, as i'm relatively new to this. I read somewhere that it's better for both the record and the stylus if you lay the stylus down where you want it (at the beginning of the record or wherever) an THEN start spinning the record, what's your take on this? It seemed odd to me so I thought I'd ask.
57250tr 9 months ago
@57250tr The placing of the needle on the vinyl and then activating play (to me) sounds more like a dj thing for cueing up a song. I never do that. I prefer having the record already rotating as the cueing mechanism on the AT LP-120 is VERY gentle on records and eases the cartridge and stylus slowly down into the groove. Even on my Technics I never did put the 'needle' on first(never know what can happen---i.e.; you or someone,by accident, bump into the 'table and ruin your needle)...
vinylspinner3345 9 months ago
@vinylspinner3345 That makes sense, thanks for all your help

I notice that Audio Technica employs full manual operation for the tone arm on this model and the model above it, with full automatic operation on the 2 models below it. Is there a reason that the more advanced models are manual? I'm looking to buy this turntable because it comes highly recommended but i wanted something with automatic operation. If it's more common for higher grade players to use manual than i'll remove that factor from my considerations, please let me know

BIGSABMUSIC 10 months ago
@BIGSABMUSIC As long as the main body (chassis) is the same, it is a clone. Many of the cheaper ones leave off some of the extra features like the pop-up stylus target light, but you can still see the outline of where that part was supposed to go. They probably just tell the factory in China which features to include, whether to paint it silver or black, and what brand name to put on it.

@BIGSABMUSIC No, this is just a Chinese-made imitation of the Technics SL-1200. There are many different brands and variations of these 1200 clones. Audio Technica is just one of the more famous ones, and the only one that I've seen with 78 RPM speed.
