  • why don't you idiots who profess to teach do so on a 4 string which is what the majority of beginners start with!

  • Hence the fret bars create squares and parallel's not used correctly, but memory does and people ignore it,for the teacher didn't mention it...Slavery

  • Ah basically a square within squares...Hence pillars and rows...Use your own methd it will sound better.Difference between u and others is yours.

  • whats with the weird emphasis on the "little" in mary had a little lamb?

  • Tone Tone Semi-tone Tone Tone Tone Semi-tone

    The basis of any scale

Minor scales are two notes below

  • I dont want to sound stupid but when you play a scale in a song, do you have to play the scale in order? I mean you hear like Ska songs and they're all over the place

  • There are fifty-million videos and books teaching scales, but there isn't a single video or book teaching you how to actually use the bloody things to make music.

  • I hate when people smack every time they talk

  • to be honest are u dum piano players and sax players don't have to think about the notes to play a scale coming from my experience

  • Really helpful, fingering wasn't a problem, thanks!

  • What is that bass line after mary had a little lamb!

  • @EggsAndBacon44

Violent Femmes- Blister in the sun :)

  • @DallonAnderson Thanks A lot!

  • I don't know what a whole step is. Or a half step.

  • @Nonoyawns its the step you go up on the fret board, wow, ima 12 year old kid who just ordered a bass and has no idea what theyre doing,(getting lessons soon), and i knew that

  • why teach beginner bass on a 5 string?

  • @gibsonbear I'd sack him. Not a good teacher at all.

  • all that hating cause i dislike a freaking instrument, get yourselves some lifes man :D Comments doesnt always have to be positive, have some space to everyone ;) .. Sad little bass players, play a song on bass and no one you show it to will know wtf it is xD

  • u don look like bass player,

u don sound like bass player,

u don look comfortable playin that beauty,

man, u shure thats even your bass?!

  • There is no "correct" way to play it a major scale. There are three basic scale shapes that are more efficient than others, yet you failed to mention the other two.

  • what song is that on 0:23?

  • @zelcibot It's unfortunate that the majority of people don't respect the bass players. the bass is the backbone of much music., You don't notice it when it's there most of the time, but you sure as hell would notice if it were gone. Listen to actual good music and the bass is much more prominant and hard to miss. Listen to progressive rock, listen to funk. The bass will often times make your asshole much too loose.

"Yours is no disgrace" by Yes is a wonderful example.

    Fag

  • @zelcibot You clearly haven't heard of rchp muse. Without flea or Chris wolstenholme it wouldn't even sound like a proper band

  • You clearly haven't heard of rchp muse. Without flea or Chris wolstenholme

  • ive been to 11 conserts with a pretty new band my friend formed. Everyone got admired for their way of playing except the bass player because he is the fag standing in the background with his loose wrist trying to look cool playing on a instrument that NOBODY notice. Ive done some asking at my school, and NOBODY notices the darn bass player cause he is the nobody in a band. Dont try and deny it cause its the truth in a ordinary band (that isnt famous world wide)

  • @Zelcibot You have no idea what you are talking about. I am in a band, I play bass - the music sounds completely different without it. If it wasn't there, you would notice.

  • @Zelcibot i don't know if you're trolling or just plain retarded...

  • @Zelcibot That was the most idiotic comment I have ever read on youtube.

  • The famous bass players are known because they are in some huge bands that gets alot of attention and then EVERYONE in the band gets attention. When you hear a band after a consert giving nice comments about each others playing, you always hear something like "kick ass drums, you sure know how to smack them!" or "Nice guitar, its some pretty cool riffs you know!". And then there is the bass. Nice "Dung Dung - Simple Simple" sound you make, a down syndrome could do the same. Like come on

  • @Zelcibot You can't even spell concert.

  • thanks i learn a lot

  • WHATS THE SONG CALLED AFTER MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB?

  • @ImTheAmazingEva VIOLENT FEMMES-Blister in the Sun

  • think about this; Besides red hot chili peppers,The singer, guitarist and drummer are the famous bastards that gets respect :D The bass is just a gay "duuung duuung" instument :D Like, you cant play a song on bass that people would know :P FAKE AND GAY, 3 wonderful words for the bass :D

  • @Zelcibot If you say so... Try to listen to any song you like WITHOUT the bass. It is an important instrument, no matter what you say. If you don't like... well, just shut up and don't disrespect the bass players. You're being such a child and such a troll...

  • @Zelcibot You're logic is about as acceptable as saying Travis Barker is a good drummer.

''Like, you cant play a song on bass that people would know.''

Tool - Schism, Disposition, Rosetta Stoned, Sober. Anything by them.

    Primus - Practically anything.

    Dream Theater - Practically, anything.

    I can go on.

On a side note; Three wonderful words for the bass; melodic, rhythmical, necessary.

    Troll Successful.

  • @Viibrate aint trolling, just saying its a "dung dung" instrument nobody really cares about :P

  • @Zelcibot ..Which is trolling!

    Stop being smug. D:

  • @Zelcibot why dont you go play with your pud in a corner homo!! BASS IS FUCKING BAD ASS!! dont try to tell us duuuung, duuuung!! listen to some STEVE HARRIS playing his bass on any IRON MAIDEN song. dont try to tell us bass is boring!! your ass hurts everyday from being penetrated from behind-- dont come here and say BASS sucks,, YOU SUCK!! you march for gay rights each and everyday!! eat FUCK dickwad

  • @rocketsnest442 you almost sound as mad as when you busted me banging your mom :D Look im just saying that in a band (a singer, drummer, guitar and bass for example) the bass is nearly almost the instrument nobody gives a rats ass about since the sound it makes isnt as noticable as the others :P And yeah a few people are famous for it, but thats what? 8 people worldwide? Its a gay instrument that helps the drums because that what it can do and no comments can make me think otherwise :P

  • @Zelcibot

It keeps the beat, enriches the tone by delving into the lower hertz, and provides fills ever 4 measures or so to keep the song more interesting. Its not the center of attention in most cases, but the songs would sound a lot more empty without it. Why else would bands keep bassists if they were pointless? I'd like you to name one band without a bassist. Obviously every single band in existence understands something you don't. Be a little logical and mature here.

  • @BassGuitarGuy128 The white stripes doesnt have a bass player. Pwnd. Anything else you wanna tell me doc?

  • @Zelcibot

But the thing is most others do

  • @Zelcibot What are you talking about?

  • @Zelcibot hey buddy u need first to listen to some metallica or some old green day and then tell me wen i play the bass i can only play dung dung dung ok thanks

  • well, maybe not for everyone else here, but this was very helpful to me. :)

  • why is this video covered with words? its a sucky lesson anyway

  • @Zelcibot

    bullshit

  • @Zelcibot tell that to les claypool or mark king

  • @Zelcibot Man, such an arrogant person you are! I'm a guitarist, but I love to play the bass too and I respect the bassists! It's a very difficult instrument and it deserves respect, more than everything else!

  • @FriedChickenofDeath6 keep telling yourself that bro, its a lausy instrument nomatter what you say :D

  • @Zelcibot James Jamerson would like to have a word with you.

  • Are the modes of scales important to learn ??????

  • @realjuvelive YESS

  • @AlexKalicinski Well would you mind telling me how ?

  • @realjuvelive They are vital to improvising.

A mode will help you distinguish the right not from wrong.

  • ok ill tab it for yall. third fret of A, open D, 2nd fret D, 3rd fret D, 5th fret D, 2nd fret G, 4th fret G, 5th fret G. that it. oh and the arpeggio is 3rd fret A, 2nd fret D, 5th fret D, 5th fret G

  • all i could hear was the last note and i figured it out by ear from there. gotta be an expert bassist. :D lol

  • bassmania.webs.com

  • can u give us the fingering.

  • @hodgesgd gave yur mom the fingering. lol

  • @aperfectgift123 I just got this message fuck you gay boy a perfectgift123 sounds pretty gay to me. How you like them apples.

  • @hodgesgd gave yur mom the fingering.

  • HA! BASS-ically! thats funny shit right there.

  • Its only makes sense if your an expert bass player already :)

  • expert village is for TWAT POCKETS

  • UGH why don't you give us the strings and fret numbers.

  • Kewl!

  • First of all, what the Hell is the correlation between the subtitles and what he's saying?!

  • dumbass, turn ur amp on, i cant even hear ur playing

  • To all the newbies, first learn your basic exercises, notes. Then this will be easy.

  • I am to stupid to get music teori. Im just going to bang away at the open e string and make sum punk.

  • WTF?? What happens if I have a cute little 4-string bass, and I'm not awesome enough to be like Expert Village to own one with another string, does that make me teh failz and unable to learn? D: D: /rant off

  • @RyanTheEpic hey never played on the b string or the bass, he started on the e, the second heaviest string.

  • I dident understand

  • WOOO CHEERS !

  • is it just me who thinks it strange the scales only involve the top 3 strings? what happened to the bottom one? :P

  • @DirtyMosha *facepalm* dude, there are also scales for the last string... hell, you could play a whole scale in one string...

  • @kholdphlames oh right :/ kinda new to bass, and everywhere i read about scales seems to involve only the first 3 strings, should prolly read more into it :)

  • What song is that? the one he plays at 20 seconds?

  • This guy is playing a 5 string bass. Yeah, that's a perfect instrument to teach beginners on.

  • @Swodaem just forget the top string even exists then.

as a bass player you gotta use your imagination ;)

  • Fuck, Fuck, Fuck, and Fuck expertvillage...Always sucks!

  • @Dakamum your totally right.

  • For those that are trying to get a decent perspective yet have found themselves watching novicevillage....... This is just 1 of the patterns. You need to know all the patterns and how they link along with sliding versions that climb the neck.

  • makes no sense at all u need to be more clear about fingerings i had to pause each time u did the finger of the scales and it took me hours to even remember 1 correctly then i was smart enough to put it down on paper o.o....but yea ima give u a 3 lol

  • play this figer!! F**** off!!

    expert village, AKA (duh village)

  • I've never seen an 'Expert Village' video that has been at all helpful.

Must people watching this will have a four string bass!

  • Gahhhh, why not 4 string?! haha

  • epic bass.bet chicks love it :D

  • i dont knw why is this video making it too complicated, or is it only me who finds it complicated ?

  • @phenomial It´s probably you.. What did you find complicated? the half step whole step thing? all that is is half step = one fret, whole step = 2 frets. Either direction from whatever fret you were.

  • no he is

  • @phenomial I took what I learned from piano lessons and it boils down to this for major scale: A whole step is moving two frets up while a half step moves one fret up. Whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half. Seems confusing at first, I know =/ hopefully I helped a bit.

  • @phenomial nope i had a hard time too.

  • @phenomial its not really complicated ,ITs pretty easy if you ask me, If you have played the classical guitar, this is pretty easy

  • Dude I can't hear crap

  • I wasnt aware that poo made noise :O

  • what is the little song after mary had a little lamb

  • sounds like blistered in the sun by the violent femmes :D

  • blister in the sun

  • how can i play The Bass Guitar

  • Great video!

I am practicing every one of the scales now, and I am enjoying every moment!

  • took me a minute to realize it was a 5 string bass. i feel like a rookie

  • interesting

  • Im going to start playing bass under someone could tell me what is best 4 string or 5 string?

  • 4 string is easier to start on, and cheaper in case you decide you don't like it after a while

  • If you're starting out then a 4 string would be best

  • Learn on a 4 String.

5 Strings are what I call "specific" instruments. Basically meaning unless you're playing music that specifically requires that lower note then a 5 string simply isnt needed and when learning all the 5th string would do is get in the way because you wont be using it.

  • 4 you don't want too much to deal with if you dont even know how to play

  • such a cheesy ending

  • hey guys i just found these awsome bass lessons i didnt know anything about bass guitar before and now i can play any scale anywhere, let me know if you interested and ill give you the link

  • im interested i love bass guitar but i cant afford lessons right now

  • I've been playing guitar for a while and I bought a bass 2 weeks ago, since I've started playing the bass I've noticed my fingers getting sloppy when I switch to a guitar, so my question is:

will playing bass affect my guitar playing in the long run, do I have to choose between both?

  • youll get used to the switch

  • opposite here

because i had to put more strength in while playing the bass my fingers are more precise on the guitar

  • usually when they do the close up of the demo, i 'get it" but for some i didnt on this video. maybe if instructors would paint their nails black or something, help us audio/visual learners...

  • Its just this progression. Fingers 2 4 on the first string of the scale. 1 2 4 On the second and 1 3 4 on the last string.

  • rofl its funny how everyone baggs on expertvillage vids n stuff but they still keep the vids xD rolf

  • he's got some sloppy fretting in his closeup...

  • my thoughts exactly

  • how do you palm mute on bass when playing with your fingers? if anybody knows then please explain to me or if you know a video that shows me how send me a link

  • he is the most expert dude on expert village, everyone else sucks

  • its the same thing for a four string just play the E string just like him. I mean, Jeez just ignore the B string and its the same shit. Unless you dont know how to tune a bass. . .

  • this is a good video for beginners, but wouldn't it make more sense for him to play a four string to avoid confusion?

  • ya i know man its annoying when people do tutorials with the Bb string and it always takes forever for me to try to transfer it to my 4 string

  • omg i hate dat too

  • ya i know man i hate having to tune all my strings down instead of just being told what it is for your standard 4 strings

  • i didnt understand a shit

  • Dette er veldig enkelt egentlig, før skjønte jeg ikke noe heller, men ikke tenk for vanskelig. Kan gi deg noen tips her. "Major" betyr "Dur" og "Minor" betyr "Moll".

"A Whole Step" er visst f.eks du går fra 1 bånd til 3 bånd.

"A half Step" er visst f.eks du går fra 1 bånd til 2 bånd.

    "Root Note" betyr Grunnote.

Kan gi deg et siste tips - når han spiller første skalaen så starter han på "C". dvs. Andre streng (A strengen) på 3 bånd (c noten)

Bare si ifra om du trenger mer hjelp

  • Tusen takk!

Jeg kan ikke alle de notene osv. jeg kan bare lese tabs :-)

  • yay finally an Expert Village guy happens to be actual bass player! Good video and btw nice bass, what brand is it?

  • Elrick, made by a Rob Elrick in chicago. There great, you can usually find them at any bass specialty store.

  • Michael Torres.... wtf b4 u teach people how to play learn to play properly urself lmao. When u were showing us how to play a major (u were fretting the notes) sometimes i saw u fretting the notes rite on the fret or near the fret (just a bit) the point is that ur finmger was not in the middle of the frets. If a noob would have saw this video he would have tried to copy wat u did and would have wrong technique.

  • Your finger shouldn't be in the middle--that's bad technique, bro.

  • ???? Yes it should be in between the frets.

  • Comment removed

  • No, it should be just behind the fret, that way you won't get as much buzz

  • actually it should be right behind the fret.not on the fret.

  • Well everyone is different but normally when you play with the finger in the middle of the fret you get buzz. The point is to create a solid connection between the string and the fret, and the best way to do that is to play right near the fret.

  • ok you dont know what i mean then

  • That's actually a correct way to do it u ass, because when u fret in the middle the only thing that u get is extra action (which u dont want) and excess strength put into pushing the string down (ur finger still doesnt feel it fixed) ...and eventually also messing up your fingerboard. The point of fretting is make connection between fret and string and right next to the fret is the most effective way

  • i only rely on subtitles for information by his words of what he say everything out of his mouth not what on bass guitar sounds so I'm deaf and look who is stupid now?

  • whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step

  • minor scale is sweeter

  • Do you ever practice minor scale with raised 5th? The faster resolve makes for some swift sounding chords, particularly in metal.

  • Very smartly done. I will build my church upon this rock.

  • upon this cock

  • lol EDDIE VEDDER..blister in the sun

  • I play bass by feeling the vibrations, just simple sit my butt on the speaker box let my balls shake LoL there your answer, Feeling is believing.

  • Blooody nice bass m8!!

  • yes subtitles thank you man I am deaf and been playing bass sometimes

  • How do you play bass if you're deaf?!

  • not

  • Perfectly! Just ask a deaf bassist!

  • cool cool. touche

  • how would subtitles work? you can't describe a sound in words. stupid.

  • ok so theres subtitles so def people can learn bass?

  • blister in the sun

  • what is the name of the second song he played?

  • bom video. bom professor. jah guia mozum

  • the bass is too low

  • That's not even a major scale :-/

  • the first thing he played was actually a d major then he played g major like he said

  • it is -.- first scale he shows is a major scale, dunno what scales they have been teaching to you...

  • I correct myself.

I went to full screen to watch it again, and yeah that's a major scale.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • np :) i know that its easy to confuse between a major scale and miksolydic scale.

  • what is a whole step and helf step?

  • I'll take this from a pianist perspective first: Let's choose a note... say G. It's a white note on the piano correct? A half-step up/down from G means move one note up/down, which is G flat and G sharp. A whole step would be moving two notes up/down, in that case we'd get F and A.

On a bass: a half-step is one fret up/down the string. A whole step would be two frets up/down... and I think there's something else to it, but I'm still a beginner on bass.

  • a whole step is a whole note to the next note up or down

a half step is a note one half step up or down, as in to a sharp or flat note

  • can u send me the notes fo animal i hav becomed from three days grace if u know it plz or anybody else reading this plz plz plz!!

  • holy shit.. all you people are morons. a major scale is just all notes in a key with the pattern tone tone semitone, tone tone tone semitone.

a sax scale is the fucking same. a violin has the same notes, a bloody xylophone ueses the same scale base. If you dont know that, dont look for how to play bass on youtube.

  • Can I be as awesome as you?
