I'm learning Calculus for fun, I'm only taking Geometry right now. Main reason actually is because I'm taking Physics and there's a concept of integrals that we solve very basically, I want to actually know what it is.
I used to love physics, algebra and even a bit of trig. then ran into a long run of bad teachers and tutors who made me dispise it. Saw this video while studying for a calc test and the spark is alive again, math IS practical, and when explained correctly it becomes very clear and easy. Thank you, this really helped me
@enlargemedia variable with a dot on top of it, is the newton notation. like, say, distance is x, x* for velocity, x** for acceleration. Lebniz is using dy/dx as far as I know.
im paying roughly 500-600$ to be taught this in college, and my prof blows and cant teach to save his soul. Not that class average of 50% means anything,,, I just learned more watching this video than I did being 1 month into my calc class. Wish I found this sooner.
wow.....that was way easier to understand than the way i learned. Its nice to finally know HOW you get the definition of the derivative by deriving it.
hi the function f(x)=e^(sqrt(x)) is defined when the x is equal to 0. the y=1. however the when i find the derivative of this function, i get: (e^(sqrt(x))/(2(sqrt(x)). at zero, the derivative is undefined. i am unable to answer the question of why it is not defined. im in calculus 2 in college and i was reviewing some derivative when i encountered this situation. any answeres as to why the derivative is undefined at the same point where the function is?
And yes, my prof sucked. He was a genius and nobody, not even the people who were good at math, could understand his lectures. Thus I rather learned with your help and my my own brain.
You helped me to a C on my university exam with two weeks of learning. Thank you very much for that. Untill then I ALWAYS, since my childhood, been a student who was happy to not get an F in an math exam.
Alas,,,,,if i had approach to these videos when i was in college, i would have scored much much better in calculus..........i wish some time can drag back and i may re-do my Bachelors with these videos.......i must top ..........no one taught derivative definition like this atleast to me
He is amazing. I would love to see his feelings on the economic recovery cycle using the sum of data from all recessions since the crash. I bet he would nail it.
@JonathonRedley Some schools allow their students to take it earlier than that, if the students are qualified for it. I have a friend who's taking AP Calculus as a sophomore and will be taking college math courses outside of school once he finishes the year.
Thank you for posting these! It is difficult to see what the professor is writing on the board in a crowded class so this is a huge help to me! I have found these on line lectures as valuable as tutoring.
He just explained, clearly, in 6.23 min what took our math teacher two whole lessons at least. And our math teacher was a good teacher. I am long out of school and I never would have thought that I would need any of this again. But here I am doing 3D and I wanna write a little plugin and suddenly I need to know all this stuff again... so pay attention guys and gals... sooner or later you will need it! :)
Thank you so much for your wonderful mathematics lessons. I wish I had a teacher like you when I was at school :) I was always interested in mathematics but there was no one at school to inspire me. Instead of studying maths and physics I studied medicine. Schools need teachers like you. You are indeed an inspiring teacher, Sir ! All the best!
@raynez h cannot equal 0, you will have to look into the proof for that. But in short, the definition of the derivative is that limit, as shown in the video. The limit as h approaches to 0 is, graphically, two points x and x+h coming closer and closer together (distance between them approaching to 0), and thus farming a line that connects these two points will actually give us a tangent to one point (since the distance between these two points is infinitely small, approaching 0)
@raynez to continue, if you were to make h=0, there would no longer be two points, x+h and x, but rather you would have two of the same points, x and x, which will not provide you with a tangent line ~ the point of the derivative is to give you the slope of a point on a curve, and that is the beauty to this, by assuming 2 points that are infinitely close together, u can form a tangent line which you can find the slope of ~ rmb, drawing a tangent on a graph paper to fin the slope is not accurate
you can tell he has been doing this for a long time because he draws straight lines on a black board. this is only attainable through experience haha.
I learned Calculus at my University for my Bachelor degree in Chemistry, but I have never seen a more clear and precise professor like this man. Congratulations, professor. You are the best and most dedicated Calculus professor in the whole world. Keep going, you are contributing a valuable resource for all the Calculus students around the globe. Perfect!
@GeneralOJB You're right about differential being slope and integration being area, but a graph can describe them both. If he was talking about the area under the curve, that'd be integration. But he's talking about the slope of the tangent to the curve, and that's the differential.
My head almost exploded...anyways, does this formula have anything to do with those Wall Street derivatives that nearly took down US banks in the 90's and the recent fall of the housing market? I still don't really understand what a derivative is btw ...lol.
@EricEngland Clever question; I'd never noticed the similarity in the terms. In both cases one value derives from another, but the formulas are not related. In math, the value of the derivative comes from the slope of the function. In finance, the value of the derivative comes from some other investment.
the visual interpretion helped me understand a limit for what it really is, rather than just solving them blindly. Thank you so much for that! Final in 2 days.
regardless of the skill of the teacher i think that after 5 years of doing problems and looking through a book you would have learned it, i think that you either didnt learn from something as simple as this or you never tried before when you had a chance
This guy is the most amazing Maths teacher I've seen in my life. Never have I once understood what the hell Differentiate was all about despite countless explaination from different teacher until just watching this video. Awesome.
Thank you so much for putting this up. I really need help with calc for my engineering course and my instructor is from russia... there are alot of wariables and walues and nuclear wessles. I don't understand what he says. But I'm happy I found this.
@TlogicoP Weird isn't it? Maybe not too many people watch it because Justin Bieber doesn't make a pop-rap cameo about his no *limit* love for derivatives, but there are actually things one can learn on the internet. Gotta love it.
the limit part was easy to understand, the graph was great. but... cant seem to understand what that have to do with velocity and the other word example.
That slope is the rate of change (speed in this example) at that very point on the curve.
When you have non linear s/t graph...you cannot determinate exact speed in some point of the time since the speed changes constantly (acceleration). You must have two points on the curve to determinate the slope(speed) at some point in time, but that is impossible since there are infinitive number of points coming towards that point in time. Limit describes that (h->0). And that very limit is the slope.
...sounds confusing....but that is the whole point of derivatives. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, derivatives were "created" because of that speed problem.
If I move from point A to point B during some time, what was my speed at time X? Not average speed, but the exact speed at that particular time.
Confusing at first, but once you get it the rest of calculus will be "easy".

I like this video and I don't know how you got the impression that I didn't. My previous comment was directed at Janskleig who acted like a jackass. Why would I be here if I didn't like his lectures People can't read these days.

Sir, I just wanted to say, that your teaching methods are amazing, and that you've helped me a lot! I'd like to buy one of your books, and I'd appreciate it if you'd tell me what is the title of the book.
Thanks a lot, and please keep posting videos!
