If the server asked if he wanted a refill then it does cost for a refill otherwise the server would just do it. When was the last time a server walked over to you and asked if you wanted a refill of water? They just come by with a pitcher and do it.

That's why I always, always, ask. Usually if it's around $2 a glass, refills are included. I'll buy a drink then. If they tell me, no, it's not included, then I don't buy a drink.

Usually restaurants and other food businesses should have signs or something that inform a customer about refills and whether or not they are free.Otherwise,it might be a good idea for the customer to take the initiative and ask before getting one.

I hope you say yes because that's an illegal fee, but so many business do it. So in a case like that, what is a customer to do? @blue200922 The reason you should get mad is because filling a 32oz glass of Coke only costs about $0.15-0.30. And the worst part is that most restaurants don't use 32oz glasses for sodas! So unless this guy was getting like 10 refills, NO restaurant should ever charge for soda refills. However, in this case, it's not about the money. He was upset because the waiter kept refilling the drink, but didn't tell him there was a charge.

I dont have a problem with eating establishments charging for refills, but I do believe that they should make the customer clearly aware that refills are extra. Most restaurants that I have been to have a free refill policy, and if I feel that a restaurant has done me wrong or the food was crap, then I just dont go back its that simple. Besides the cost to make a soda from the syrup and carbonated water is quite small, so its silly when they are charging $2.50 or more for even one soda. Oh well

If the server asked if he wanted a refill then it does cost for a refill otherwise the server would just do it. When was the last time a server walked over to you and asked if you wanted a refill of water? They just come by with a pitcher and do it.

@MissAliiciia Very few restaurants that I've been to even write anything about refills. I'm in Canada. Unless it's a menu geared for children, I won't see it written. That's why I always, always, ask. Usually if it's around $2 a glass, refills are included. I'll buy a drink then. If they tell me, no, it's not included, then I don't buy a drink.
More often then not, I just drink water and wait until I get home for soda.

To the man's defence, the server should have been more careful with his words. If refills are free, then he should ask if the man wants a refill. If not, he should ask if the man wants "another drink."
Either way, an extra dollar or two for another drink doesn't warrant this kind of reaction...lol

Usually restaurants and other food businesses should have signs or something that inform a customer about refills and whether or not they are free.Otherwise,it might be a good idea for the customer to take the initiative and ask before getting one.

@KingMKLA Their costs for running the business might be higher, but their costs for sodas still remain the same...dirt cheap! There's no valid reason why any restaurant should charge for a soda refill. If they're using the "trying to recoup costs" excuse, then they'll be out of business for other reasons very shortly. These restaurants would probably save more money if they stopped serving free water.

I'm just saying that any customer who feels they are being ripped off (with no explanation by management to prove otherwise) has the right to voice that opinion. I worked in retail for 7 years and I've had a lot of screaming customers in my face. I'm not saying they are in the right, but every so often, a customer had a valid case. Of course the approach could be different, but everyone reacts differently.

@7477238 How can you call him a liar? Maybe he got confused and he's been going to a restaurant in that location for 30 years. Maybe that particular business has only been operating in that building for 8 years. That's not the point.
As for me, just because I agree with the customer in this case, doesn't mean I act the same way. I wouldn't have tripped out over it. I understand that some places charge for refills and some don't. I would simply not take the refill if I didn't want to pay.

@7477238 Also, I think this customer was pissed because it sounds like he didn't even ask for the refill. Or at the very least, he did ask for one, but the waiter didn't advise him that there would be a charge for it. If either of these two cases were what happened, then he was well within his right to complain (and be pissed). This is especially true if that restaurant just recently implemented the price change.

I hope you say yes because that's an illegal fee, but so many business do it. So in a case like that, what is a customer to do? Either deal with it, start shopping somewhere else or complain to a manager and possibly yell like crazy. Who really cares? Either option is just a good as the next.

@blue200922 The reason you should get mad is because filling a 32oz glass of Coke only costs about $0.15-0.30. And the worst part is that most restaurants don't use 32oz glasses for sodas! So unless this guy was getting like 10 refills, NO restaurant should ever charge for soda refills. However, in this case, it's not about the money. He was upset because the waiter kept refilling the drink, but didn't tell him there was a charge.

I dont have a problem with eating establishments charging for refills, but I do believe that they should make the customer clearly aware that refills are extra. Most restaurants that I have been to have a free refill policy, and if I feel that a restaurant has done me wrong or the food was crap, then I just dont go back its that simple. Besides the cost to make a soda from the syrup and carbonated water is quite small, so its silly when they are charging $2.50 or more for even one soda. Oh well

Just don't tip if this happens. If the waiter asks if you want a refill on your drink and doesn't phrase it in a way to indicate you're placing a new order, you should deduct it from their tip.
Here's an example of how to phrase it "would you like to order another cola?"
