I have this review and I have to say its the most watched of all the reviews I have. I cried with laughter watching it the first time. I have to add that he did know a lot about F1 as well and the tragic moments he covered with great grace and respect. After all, there were a lot in 1982. F1 needed fun in this season, otherwise it would've been a very sad review.
1982 is a year very crazy in f1;2 dieds(villeneuve and palletti);strike action of pilots in south africa;of teams in san marino, victories of pilots mediums(patrese in monaco, tambay in germany,de angelis in austria)the champion is winner only one race(rosberg),runner up racing half season(pironi) and fittipaldi ford crash
@hugodrax71 I interesting - always thought he ran out of fuel. Where do you have the evidence for his electrical problem? I'd like to know that in detail.
@TheColinChapman it was an electrical problem, the team put in a battery which wasn't fully charged...it was written about in the press at the time but if you want confirmation read Autosport's recent 50th anniversary Ferrari special (I'm pretty sure it's Autosport's celebration) and/or Christopher Hilton's superb book 1982: The Inside Story of the Sensational Grand Prix Season.
holy f#ck!!! this narator is so full of it!!!!!! he probably is more happier narrating an oval race!!! but has no knowlidge of f1 driving...for gods sake, in america they don;t even dare to race in wet conditions!!!
@basmikiemike: Clive James demonstrates his extensive knowledge of Formula One in other parts of the 1982 review, and is certainly better equipped to do the commentary than some other people called forward to do FIA reviews.
they had so much ground effect under the cars, front wings weren't needed
it was discovered that the front wings disturbed the air going into the venturi tunnels, and therefore made more damage than good, hence they were removed
1982 was the last year for ground effect. From 1983 onwards it was banned. Therefore they put the wings back on in the front.
Well, I once read that when Patrese took Pironi back to the pits, he didn't know that he'd won the race because he had thought, the Williams which passed him after his spin would have been Rosberg. But it wasn't Rosberg who had retired a long time before, but Daly. So they had to tell him at the podium ceremony that he had actually won the race.
"Was this part of a new Renault tactic to build up such a thick cushion that there would be time to redesign the car after it disintegrated? On the balconies, learned opinion was divided."
That is one Cursed race, and i love the commentator at 4:46 'having fallen victim to that obscure mechanical malaise, known to the italian designers as 'abscence of fuel'. Great
Patrese took Pironi with him on his sidebox also because he didn't know that he had won at that point. The message received him at the finish, that he had won the race. He thought Rosberg had won, but Rosberg retired ten laps before.
The commentator is actually an Australian writer - Clive James and presumably this is part of a documentary. He did many documentaries (mostly travel) in this inimitable style - well worth watching them if you get a chance.
Incredible race. Tree laps left, Prost drives out. Patrese take lead and drives too out. Pironi takes the lead but his fuel is end, de Cesaris takes the lead but he loose his oil too. Patrese could start his engine and drives win! In current Formula One last laps like them are impossible :C
total chaos :D
