"My apathy is tragedy, I'm content to stay inside. This emptiness is killing me, I can run, but I can't hide...." I always loved their simple, yet very well-written lyrics. Paired with that VOICE, and a kick-ass band, that makes for some really well-crafted, beautiful songs. LOOOOOOVE this band! They were the soundtrack to my childhood. Thank god my parents liked good music!
I didn't really get into this band until the late 90's - they are not only extremely talented and hard working, but they are a great group of people. Mr. Babjek signed autographs and showed us the hands free beer bottle chug after the show. I see them whenever they play nearby. Their music moves me. Keep rockin forever Smithereens!
I agree I song should have been better known, plus I think the video could have featured Belinda a bit more. But spilled milk huh, it's great that I found it, plus just bought it on iTunes Great Song.
Here's another one I've never heard before. So glad for YouTube......helps us to discover all the great and beautiful music that maybe we were too busy to pay attenton to or never heard. Gorgeous song.....
In my life the beatles the solo bit?Is that a tribute to the beatles or something? first time i've ever heard this song so that is probably intentional i dont know
Great song. and the harpsicord part is more an homage to the beatles than a rip-off. The Smithereens idolize the Beatles and did a couple cover albums of their songs.
This is one of my favorite songs and never heard a "love" or "torch" song done so well or so accurately. There are great bands that never seem to become the big popular bands and I guess the Smithereens were one of them. But kudoes to them for the music they made and "11" was one of the best albums I ever heard. At least the people that did get to hear them got to appreciate them
Such an incredible gem. Wow, I LOVE this song. I love most of their songs, but this is exquisite. Belinda Carlisle's voice fits so well with this song.
when this album came out, i believed this song to be the "perfect" single: great lyrics and melody; all the right hooks in all the right places; then wrapped itself up perfectly in just under three minutes. too bad nobody promoted it at the time...
"11" was a great album from a great band. It's incredible how many crappy bands make it big, and bands like the Smithereens are vitually ignored. God love them for going strong for so many years. Thanks for the music, guys.
My favorite album is, was, and always will be "Green Thoughts," which I think is actually out of print now. (SIGH.) But yes, "11" is outstanding and I remember listening to it (on cassette! LOL) for the first time in the fall of 1989 and just being blown away by it. The first three tracks: "A Girl Like You," "Blues Before And After," and "Blue Period" were just a perfect trio.
Can anybody get Pat to sign up for Weight Watchers? Seriously, I want to see them live, and I'm afraid he might end up like Kirby Puckett. They may have been able to replace Mike Mesaros with "The Thrilla", but no one on earth could step in for Pat.
Love this song. Pat's voice is so beautiful...have seen the Smithereens many times and he/they are still so GREAT! Hope they make it out to the West Coast soon. "They say the West is nice this time of year."
This song really puts you in the '90's with other cool stuff like the X-files, Millenium and chics that wear black sultry clothing. Balinda is totally hot and sexy in this. Everything about this song is enjoyable.
This is an awesome song! It's suppose to set put you in a meloncholy mood. I believe it achieves this. The duet in the song with Belinda works very well. I read all of the comments and we have a few Simon Cowls in here that just don't really know good music. This isn't American Idol!
Beautiful! I also didn't know it was Belinda on backing vocals! Awesome song! Screw these assholes who wouldn't know a good song if bit their arse! The Smithereens should've been a household name, with all the good music they gave us, and this is one of their best!
If you could just fill this in, it will help me get a barometer on exactly which direction your tastebuds have wildly flown. Then we can start tossing bombs at one another. All in good fun, of course.
the pits compared to Belinda's music that I do like...of course, I realize this isn't so much her song as it is the Smithereens. Still, this song bores me to tears and her vocals are so barely audible.
I actually did not know that is was Belinda Carlisle who did the female vocals on this song, because it doesn't sound like her; which is something we should all be grateful for.
Um... The harpsichord part is from a piece of Classical music. The Beatles lifted it as well. Similar to how the entire melody for "Lover's Concerto" is Bach's "Minuet in G major".
Did you know it came about through a TV show? Rock Steady. They used to get 2 different type of singers together, and get them to do a duet. They thought BC was fancy and wouldn't get on with the Smithereens, especially turning up in a white stretch limo when he rolled up in a truck. They didn't know she was already a fan of theirs, and it came off fantastically, so they released it, but sadly without any proper promotion, so it didn't chart. You can buy the single tho.
have always, will always love the smithereens. Thank You so much for your music.

That whatever you call that instrument sounds like the piece in the Beatles In my Life?
Correct me if I have the wrong song title, it was off their Rubber Soul release.
