They probably called out the words of the song line by line because most of the people in the church couldn't read. Lots of Mountain Folk were too busy working to go to school.

As a little girl down South, my parents took me to several country churches whose light source was members' lanterns hung on nails in the rough-lumber walls. The Songleader would call out a song, line by line. The people would sing it close after him. Education was a luxury not available to all, so not all could read. our church gives out one line and then we sing! but we have alot of song books. it's old regular baptist .

I started listening to Ralph Stanley when I was about 13, I finally got to see Ralph II about 3 years ago. They are one the best bluegrass bands.
