My favorite personal failure was when Edgar used the debilitator and made Doom Dragon weak to Holy. Edgar jumped and cast Holy and did 12000 damage to the dragon. Then it used Fallen One and killed me when Edgar's ATB Bar filled up.
Hey HC, I'm playing the psx version but I having trouble getting the dragon horn. Retainer doesn't die from poison. Do you think they fixed that on this version? Do all the tactics you use at the Colosseum wok in the psx version.
It's a bit harder to get that Masamune in the Advance version, though, because that monster has wicked high evade so I needed the Sniper Eye. After a few failed attempts, I decided TWO can play at this evade game, and in lieu of the Genji Glove, I gave him some Beads and a Green Beret. Sabin's attacks did less damage, but he hardly took any hits.
Actually, I used that same strategy of raising my evade to get the Dragon Horn, too. So, if you're playing the Advance version, consider that.
wow this part was insane. it took me 90 minutes to get that goddamn dragon horn, & i'm playing it on ps3 so no save states. i can't imagine how many takes you recorded to get all this stuff. did you record the commentary live on every take as well, or did you wait till you won and act it out it afterwards? lol
Anyway I almost gave up on this part, but i'm still totally keeping up with the walkthrough up to now. :P
The way I play ff6 nobody but Terra and Celes (sometimes Strago) ever get espers. It's mostly just a little challenge I enjoy doing but one of the added benefits is unless I'm using one of the aforementioned characters, nobody ever casts sleep or osmose or something stupid over and over in the coliseum thus losing my Ragnarok or other valuable item much to my chagrin. Sabin and his Spiraler (soul spiral to you advance players) have invoked my rage a time or two but for the most part...
If you're playing the Playstation or SNES version, gear up to max out your physical/magical block, furthermore, if you have Gogo, make sure to use him/her/it, as "fight" and "mimic" will be his only commands, ensuring you don't waste turns on useless spells. Farmed 8 Marvel Shoes with a level 25 Gogo that blocked everything beside "Fallen One", which is unblockable, and can't even kill you. Like a boss!
Oh! I know why Retainer did not counterattack. Sabin's suplex did not kill him...but it was the damage that he took from being poisoned. Seeing that might be a good strategy to avoid Eye for an eye in future battles too.
And all this is thanks to the fact that you posted this and then I watched this video! ;)
Personally, I kept the Regal Crown since, to my knowledge, it's the only one you can find in the entire game, and you can find Genji Equipment later in the WoR. But it's cool to see some different strategies for this game. We should have a FF6 duel one day, HC!
@GameBot31 The Charm Bangle can be found in a chest at the abandoned imperial camp after Gestahl unlocks it for you if you get the best results of his dinner banquet. You can also get a Dragon Horn in the Phoenix Cave by the Red Dragon.
I'm having a horrible time trying to kill that giant dude Borras in the GBA version. Sabin keeps whiffing, even though he's the same level as in the LP. Maybe it's because of the evasion fix. I also somehow didn't get the Charm Bangle :( Guess I have to come back later.
Any win against the Retainer at this point in the game is an epic win! After 25-30 tries, i defeated it with Sabin who evaded a first "trade off" by himself, then cast vanish, finish the enemy and avoid the last "Trade off" attack with vanish.
More epic you ask? Sabin was condammed and the enemy died at 0 sec! Too bad i couldn't record this....
When you Win in the colosseum, do you lose the item you bet and retain the item won? Because every time i win I seen to have an item missing <.<. Any ideas?
Siegefried will appear in the coliseum equp right and well quick battle. don't and you will die. He is poweful. There are some really nasty enemys in the coliseum.
The Coliseum is 1v1. can someone tell me is raggarok worth betting. it can cast flare but i think the sword u can win can cast Peal but Flare is non-elemental so no monster can Absorb it but some monster can Absorb pearl.
The ending of this video is plain sweet. Quadra-Jump plus a Holy spell equals massive winning. You said the Dragoon Horn allows for four jumps, and then proved it at the end. Perfectly done, and I bet the game would be kicking itself if it knew that's what you wanted to have happen sometime onscreen while recording.
No, the Coliseum doesn't add the encounter to the Veldt.
Usually, I would agree with you about the Genji Gloves, but this is FF6. The majority of characters can deal maximum damage from the back row without the Fight command.
Retainer is freakin' evil in the arena! Not only that, I screwed up and gave Sabin magic so it's like he can cast magic all day and I can't get a hit on Retainer!
The worst experience that I had in the colosseum was when I selected Sabin to clean house and he opened the battle with his spiraler blitz. For those not in the know spiraler kills Sabin and heals all the other party members. So I died as soon as the atb filled.

To clarify, Retainer doesn't counter if the poison damage happens right after an attack (or possibly, only right after a blitz). I finally managed to reproduce your results but with AuraBolt, but I'm pretty sure he does counterattack when the poison kills him not right after an attack.
Also, it wasn't the poisoning for you, HCB. I just did that and he countered with Tradeoff, even though at that point Sabin wasn't attacking, only the poison. Right after that, the Retainer died, so it must have been a counter-attack.
What I just experienced is so horrible, yet funny, that I just have to share it with everyone.
I kept losing against the Retainer... I simply didn't do enough damage with my physical hits. Only 500, 600 tops. First I thought HCB made a mistake and said the wrong equipment setup but no setup let me do more than 800 damage on a single hit... Then it dawned on me: SABIN WAS IN THE FREAKIN' BACK ROW ALL ALONG!
Do you plan on doing a playthough of the Dragon's Den or Soul Shrine? Many of the people that did videos of these places so far are so dull. With your playing style and added commentary, it would blow out any Dragon's Den videos to date! Good videos and keep up the good work!

IIRC that's due to the fact that there were strict guidelines for translations (due to no rating system back then) and thus any and all religioud references were changed.
HOLY GOD! I just had the closest fight in this damn coliseum against Borras. Sabin had 91 HP left, no hope of victory, then out of nowhere he uses a desperation attack and destroys him.
It's one of the few places I will use everything I got to insure victory, even if it means a cheap victory. Other than that, I prefer challenge in my playthroughs.
Quick question for anyone, really. I only got 22 guys at the dinner with the Emperor and missed out on the Charm Bangle. Only way I can get one prior to Phoenix Cave according to some sites is betting my Ribbon for Gold hairpin, the hairpin for the horn.
My question is, I can either have: Ribbon and Marvel shoes and proceed with the game, or Dragon Horn and Marvel shoes?
my 3 best characters to use in the colosseum are locke, edgar and shadow because locke has the valiant knife combination with the atlas armlet and offering relics, edgar because he can jump for a while in the colosseum and shadow because he can ignore instant death attacks.

BTW you CAN trade in the Gold Hairpin for the Dragon Horn or to get the Gold Hairpin betting in the Ribbon. I decided that since for some reason I don't have the Ward Bangle (Charm) I would go that route. It's... a bit easier during fighting too.
In the Advance version...wait, I already went through this in the World of Balance, didn't I?
Well anyways, if you get the Excalipoor from the Jidoor auction house and bet it, you get the Merit Award which lets any character equip any piece of equipment, and you also fight Gilgamesh to get the Gilgamesh esper.
Also, Clash on the Big Bridge is in the game data for FFVI Advance, but they didn't use it for the Gilgamesh battle. :/
at what point should somebody give up on getting the Dragon Horn here? I've been running my emulator on fast forward for an hour, loading save states over and over and failing every time... damn, you're a lucky SOB.
now I understand why you were so happy. I sounded the same way... had to go back to South Figaro and get a Bard's Hat to boost Sabin's Magic Evade... allowed him to dodge Tradeoff twice in the battle and WIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNN!!
You do have to be really lucky. I'm playing the Advance version and it's taken me an UNGODLY number of soft resets after losing till Sabin got lucky enough to dodge the Retainer/Yojimbo's instant death attack.
The coliseum is fun because it's a nice break from the rest of the game, and you can get some really good stuff. The part I didn't like is that if you don't have an FAQ, it takes FOREVER to figure out what items give you good stuff. You just end up getting blown away by Chupon 2/3 of the time, and you have to save before every battle in case you get into a hard fight.
I wish they told you beforehand what you'd get, and let you cancel the fight at that point (at the char. selection screen).

Wish i had you when i first played through this game, your dset ups would have made this a lot easier than i made it out to be with random strategies and hoping for lucky shots haha.
you have the master scrolls? to hit multiple times plus having some protection so there is no need to use genji gloves aaaaaaaand, edgar is awesome... but i think i like mog a little better...
does the pearl lance have a chance of casting holy on who ever is hit buy it? i'm guessing that's what happend at the end of edgar's fight wit the doom dragon.
oh, about the Marvel Shoes, if you feel like saving your Elixirs (not that you need to), but you can do: Imp Halberd -> Cat Hood -> Merit Award -> Rename Card -> Marvel Shoes.
(since Imp Halberd is such a random drop, it's easy to just go nuts with it, especially if you're training), I know that you personally are not training, but to everyone else, that's a way to get it without using your precious elixirs
If I remember correctly, if you get sneezed out of a colosseum battle, you get your original wager back. But otherwise, win or lose, your original bet is gone.

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the Genji Gloves in the World of Ruin, beyond using them for the Colosseum. High defense and elemental protection from shields are the way to go.
one trick that i learned that works for me, cast imp, and equip genji glove, 2 imp halbreds, titanium helmet, and whatever is the chest peice i dont remember, you get max attack and defense basically,
Gilgamesh is only available in the GBA version, he's one of four bonus espers that can be won. You bet a new item you can win at the auction (Excalipoor, requires a LOT of gil), and you can bet it then to fight Gilgamesh. I believe you'll have use of all your party and you can control the battle, it's not like a colisseum battle.
lol it was funny to see you so excited after every win. Nice to see you still having fun with this game even though you say you've played it so many times.
No i think you can make them with the ragnarok though. from the samurai looking dudes in that one place..... also i think you can steal them with locke on the floating continent. but i think you can get 3 with normal progression through the game and really you dont need many. Also I dont know if hes gonna go for the sword or the esper, I always go for the sword though, because the best sword in the game to me beats being able to get an infinite supply of relics I all ready have anyway.
You can steal a ragnarok I believe but its from one of the final bosses, and you can't go back after that point so I never heard of stealing it elsewhere, it is probably advance version only.

A highly reliable way of fighting the Doom Drgn here is to use Relm equipped with a Regen relic.
She often uses Sketch which will either Freeze the Dragon or knock it down to 1HP, obviously either of these are great.

Yes. The item you bet is your entry fee and cannot be recovered.

Nice, Dragon Horn + Spear is akin to Genji Glove + Masamune or other high combo weapon in FFXII.
How is Genji Shield more useful than the Gloves in this game, one that I thought offense outweighed defense?
Doom Dragon is vulnerable to Poison damage? You would think Doom = Death = immune to poison.
Debilitator reminds me of an animation from CT somehow.

I hate the arena. Anything that practically forces you to abuse guides and saved game reloads is definitely not okay in my book.
A quadruple-jump attack followed by a random Pearl spell is pretty freakin' lucky, if you ask me.

You can bet a Snow Muffler, Moogle Charm, or Relic Ring in the Colosseum to win a Charm Bangle. But you may not have them yet.

my 3 best characters to use in the colosseum are locke, edgar and shadow because locke has the valiant knife combination with the atlas armlet and offering relics, edgar because he can jump for a while in the colosseum and shadow because he can ignore instant death attacks.

BTW you CAN trade in the Gold Hairpin for the Dragon Horn or to get the Gold Hairpin betting in the Ribbon. I decided that since for some reason I don't have the Ward Bangle (Charm) I would go that route. It's... a bit easier during fighting too.

In the Advance version...wait, I already went through this in the World of Balance, didn't I?
Well anyways, if you get the Excalipoor from the Jidoor auction house and bet it, you get the Merit Award which lets any character equip any piece of equipment, and you also fight Gilgamesh to get the Gilgamesh esper.
Also, Clash on the Big Bridge is in the game data for FFVI Advance, but they didn't use it for the Gilgamesh battle. :/

You do have to be really lucky. I'm playing the Advance version and it's taken me an UNGODLY number of soft resets after losing till Sabin got lucky enough to dodge the Retainer/Yojimbo's instant death attack.

The coliseum is fun because it's a nice break from the rest of the game, and you can get some really good stuff. The part I didn't like is that if you don't have an FAQ, it takes FOREVER to figure out what items give you good stuff. You just end up getting blown away by Chupon 2/3 of the time, and you have to save before every battle in case you get into a hard fight.
I wish they told you beforehand what you'd get, and let you cancel the fight at that point (at the char. selection screen).

oh, about the Marvel Shoes, if you feel like saving your Elixirs (not that you need to), but you can do: Imp Halberd -> Cat Hood -> Merit Award -> Rename Card -> Marvel Shoes.
(since Imp Halberd is such a random drop, it's easy to just go nuts with it, especially if you're training), I know that you personally are not training, but to everyone else, that's a way to get it without using your precious elixirs

If I remember correctly, if you get sneezed out of a colosseum battle, you get your original wager back. But otherwise, win or lose, your original bet is gone.

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the Genji Gloves in the World of Ruin, beyond using them for the Colosseum. High defense and elemental protection from shields are the way to go.

I usually bet the Czarina Gown for the Minerva for Celes at this point too. You'll see why later in the LP...it's very useful.

one trick that i learned that works for me, cast imp, and equip genji glove, 2 imp halbreds, titanium helmet, and whatever is the chest peice i dont remember, you get max attack and defense basically,

That's only in Advance version. He isn't present in original SNES version.

Gilgamesh is only available in the GBA version, he's one of four bonus espers that can be won. You bet a new item you can win at the auction (Excalipoor, requires a LOT of gil), and you can bet it then to fight Gilgamesh. I believe you'll have use of all your party and you can control the battle, it's not like a colisseum battle.

No i think you can make them with the ragnarok though. from the samurai looking dudes in that one place..... also i think you can steal them with locke on the floating continent. but i think you can get 3 with normal progression through the game and really you dont need many. Also I dont know if hes gonna go for the sword or the esper, I always go for the sword though, because the best sword in the game to me beats being able to get an infinite supply of relics I all ready have anyway.

You can steal a ragnarok I believe but its from one of the final bosses, and you can't go back after that point so I never heard of stealing it elsewhere, it is probably advance version only.
