I do not have a problem with ratings on the front of the box, sure I think it is a bit strange that some think a bit of swearing is enough to give a game a teen rating but sure, have a recommended age, parents can still buy the games for their kids. However changing the content of the game is just stupid, if a game have blood and guts then leave it as is and if you have to print a warning on the cover do that but leave the game itself alone.
I do dream for a day where the AO18+ rating would one day be accepted, therefore we could be able to play the Japanese Hentai games :D
Also please don't knock them, there are many awesome stories within allot of those Japanese Visual Novels, and if you don't like the detailed love scenes then you could click and keep on clicking though the text to get past it until you go back to the story.

I disagree, we should have ratings on games - but shouldn't censor them so much. I'm really not bothered if there is blood or not in games, it doesn't change the actual gameplay and isn't always necessary. Take No More Heroes for example, it was perfectly fine with the black pixelated dust and didn't really need a ridiculous amount of blood when you killed people - in fact in the uncensored versions I found the spurting blood slowed down the gameplay and action.

I think censorship & ratings in video games are a good thing. There are just some things kids should not be playing. But what does piss me off, is when they sensor "M" rated games, for example, Ninja Gaiden II for XBOX360 was an extremely brutal game, with tons of blood, but when they redid the game for PS3 (Ninja Gaiden Sigma II) They removed the blood, and whenever you would dismember a enemy's body part, blood light would come out instead of blood, STUPID! it's M+, No need to censor it!

Well it was obvious for Namco to change Rick's mask from white to red-ish / purple for the home version to avoid any conflicts with the Friday the 13th property of Paramount pictures. As far as censorship goes I can understand the rating system because not everyone plays video games enough to know what's contained in them. And if you have kids you'll wanna know what your kid is getting themselves into. You as a parent must view the content before approving it to you child.
But I disagree with gaming companies having to drastically cosmetically alter a video game it was made popular for ( ie: Mortal Kombat ) in the first place. Nintendo at time wanted to keep their "family fun" image since there wasn't an official rating system implemented at the time. So many ran out to buy the Genesis version of MK for the violence alone.

I still find it unbelievable, but in europe games which are clearly for adults, like GTA4, are still advertised during prime time TV hours, when the whole family are watching. I hate the censorship as well too. When I played Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus, I noticed that I didn't see no blood effect in it and when I did that one character's move, the blood was black. I was really kinda mad.

Personally, I find the selling out of DC Vs Mortal Kombat more offensive. It's not like there was anything stopping the developers from giving us fatalities, they just wanted more money, and they knew they would get it from a T rated game.
I don't think enough people understand that (at least it's like this for a guy like me) video games are a getaway from real life. I don't play castlevania and decide to hunt vampires... i play these games because i love the fantasy element where i can exit the real world and enter a world where i can become a vampire hunter. Censorship just dulls the experience. even if it's as little as covering up blood, it's just a lame joke. ONe of my first games was MK2 for Genesis. And i turned out fine.

And that last part comes from the greater stigma (at least in the US) for sexually explicit content over graphic violence. And they figure the lower the rating, the higher the sales. German games are always censored, and so mod makers for German games do nothing but crank out blood patches so they can see what everyone else sees/the developers intended
To be fair... games like Splatterhouse were released on home console BEFORE any sort of ratings system, and as you pointed out the mask thing was copyright fears, not sheltering youngsters from mature content.
Also I hear the reason Manhunt was "censored" was so they could have a "Mature" rather than "Adults Only" rating... because some stores refused to carry AO games, presuming they were basically porn.

I think censorship & ratings in video games are a good thing. There are just some things kids should not be playing. But what does piss me off, is when they sensor "M" rated games, for example, Ninja Gaiden II for XBOX360 was an extremely brutal game, with tons of blood, but when they redid the game for PS3 (Ninja Gaiden Sigma II) They removed the blood, and whenever you would dismember a enemy's body part, blood light would come out instead of blood, STUPID! it's M+, No need to censor it!

Sometimes censorship in video games is just completely uncalled for. You know anyway that kids today are playing stuff that they shouldnt be playing on the 360 and PS3.
Parents shouldnt blame the people for making the games....They should be blaming themselves for bad parenting, thinking that a video game couldnt do much harm if its either M or T.

Well it was obvious for Namco to change Rick's mask from white to red-ish / purple for the home version to avoid any conflicts with the Friday the 13th property of Paramount pictures. As far as censorship goes I can understand the rating system because not everyone plays video games enough to know what's contained in them. And if you have kids you'll wanna know what your kid is getting themselves into. You as a parent must view the content before approving it to you child.

But I disagree with gaming companies having to drastically cosmetically alter a video game it was made popular for ( ie: Mortal Kombat ) in the first place. Nintendo at time wanted to keep their "family fun" image since there wasn't an official rating system implemented at the time. So many ran out to buy the Genesis version of MK for the violence alone.
What does 15 years difference since the official ESRB rating system been in effect? Tremendous, regardless.

I don't agree with censorship either. The bottom line is as a parent, you have to decide what your kid(s) can and can't watch or play-it's NOT the job of game companies or governments. If people don't want to raise kids, they shouldn't have them.
And yet parents groups STILL complain that the ESRB is not doing enough to inform them! Please! How much more descriptive do parents want them to get then "Comic Mischief"?!

I actualy played Doom when I was 4 years old, yeah all blood....
And I played Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow WArior and Blood when I was 10.... yeah, all swears, blood and sexual references.
So... I don't see any points of censorship. It justs sucks.
Thank god I played uncensored games as child on the PC (MS-DOS)

Metal Slug(arc) has blood, the dip switch is just default to none, most NeoGeo owners probably never bothered to change it = p.

Haha, this is the funniest video I've seen of yours, thus far. And what does censorship and barring a person actually compel them towards? It makes them 10x more interested, propelling them to use covert means to learn/experience something anyway! I'm sure everyone has been told something was bad/taboo and it made them want to do it all the more; the same applies here. Parents just make kids sneakier when they get righteous and think they're "protecting" them from the big, bad world.

I still find it unbelievable, but in europe games which are clearly for adults, like GTA4, are still advertised during prime time TV hours, when the whole family are watching. The parents are partly to blame but these tv companies should be ashamed of themselves too. I was watching a football match with my stepbrother a while back. He's 9. An advert for Prototype came on at half time and and the end of it he looked at me and said "that looks brilliant. Can we get it?". Unbelievable.

Censorship in games is retarded. Why should all gamers be punished because some parents think that they should push their morality on everyone else. Just don't buy your kid the game. I also hate the boner commercials along with tampon and douche bag commercials. I also agree it is stupid that cable bleeps out swearing. I hate the censorship as well too. When I played Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus, I noticed that I didn't see no blood effect in it and when I did that one character's move, the blood was black. I was really kinda mad.

Personally, I find the selling out of DC Vs Mortal Kombat more offensive. It's not like there was anything stopping the developers from giving us fatalities, they just wanted more money, and they knew they would get it from a T rated game.

I don't think enough people understand that (at least it's like this for a guy like me) video games are a getaway from real life. I don't play castlevania and decide to hunt vampires... i play these games because i love the fantasy element where i can exit the real world and enter a world where i can become a vampire hunter. Censorship just dulls the experience. even if it's as little as covering up blood, it's just a lame joke. ONe of my first games was MK2 for Genesis. And i turned out fine.

Hmmm..okay. So changing the color of Rick's mask in Splatterhouse isn't censorship. I'll agree with the Manhunt stuff. The Metal Slug games have always been like that. It's not censorship if it's ALWAYS been that way. Not like it used to be bloody and now it's not. Also I dunno about that piece of shit version of MK for the SNES you have. Granted I never bothered with the fatalities or anything because most fighting games bore me, but I owned the game and it never glitched that badly.

I think those rating things are ok. They don't really bother anyone (except u) and are somewhat helpful for parents. However changing games content for younger players is re****ed. Especially if there's no chance to play the original. It's ruining of art!! :'(

And that last part comes from the greater stigma (at least in the US) for sexually explicit content over graphic violence. And they figure the lower the rating, the higher the sales. German games are always censored, and so mod makers for German games do nothing but crank out blood patches so they can see what everyone else sees/the developers intended

To be fair... games like Splatterhouse were released on home console BEFORE any sort of ratings system, and as you pointed out the mask thing was copyright fears, not sheltering youngsters from mature content.
Also I hear the reason Manhunt was "censored" was so they could have a "Mature" rather than "Adults Only" rating... because some stores refused to carry AO games, presuming they were basically porn.

I remember using Game Genie codes to turn the sweat in SNES MK to red :P The thing I didnt understand is there was a cheat code for Genesis version for all the original fatalities which couldnt hold a flame to SNES in terms of graphics or crisp sound effects. Thank God PS2 came out with a arcade translation with Deception.

I do like the ratings on games etc. but lets face it no one really pays attention and then the parents blame it on the games when they should know what there kids are playing or if they buy it for them for example GTA for a 9year old etc..and complaing its to violent..well it is rated M/18 lol. I agree with the hole changing stuff and taking stuff away like you said for MK on SNES. And no blood on No More Heroes UK version stuff like annoyes me!
