The structure of league as a sport invites massive hits with the shoulder because the ball carrier is running into fresh air ie he can run as fast as possible without worrying about the next stage of the tackle ie getting in a position to release the ball as in union..It's not as though league players are tougher than union but the sport encourages speed and verocity of contact

I m more of a union fan, but nrl players are the toughest cunts in world sport period. and it shits all over nfl. guys make over 100 running metres every week without fat pricks taking out tacklers and making running lanes, they make about 40 tackles per game as opposed to nfl players who are lucky to get 8, and they make hits just as big without the pads and helmets. and they arent really that much smaller than nfl players.

coming from a union background (with a HUGE amount of respect for league and particuarly NRL) - all of these hits looked illegal to me. shoulder charges where no attempt is made to wrap up the ball carrier. also several looked very high. can anyone confirm the legality of these hits?

In NRL you can shoulder charge like that, in JRL (junior rugby league) you have to wrap around with your arms which is probably where you got that idea.

@570jaypee Rugby union is not 'pussy.... the hits are sometimes as hard, but the law in union you have to wrap you arms in a tackle, in league you dont, thats why the hits are more brutal! alot of union players used to play league. union involves more strength but you have to be inredilbly fit to play league. i thing both types are rough but are both great to play!
