  • This is the best version of this song and you NEVER hear it on the radio! L O V E Lou Rawls, a fabulous voice.

  • I don't know if Lou did this first, but this was the first version of this song I ever heard circa 1982. I've always identified it with him. Over the rest of the decade it became a standard, one of those songs that any artist worth their weight in whatever genre had to do their own version of...sort of like "Sunny" in the 60s. It was old hat to me by the time Bette Midler did it.

  • I think that Lou compliments the song with his version...nevermind the video, the love scenes and who's in them.....to harp on these images is foolish and does nothing to benefit anyone...so simply listen and enjoy that wonderful voice. we miss you Lou!!

  • One of my absolute favorites of all time!!! Thanks for the post, Thanks Lou Rawls!

  • Lou was a personal friend of mine, but as I watched this video, though it's Lou's voice,' I noticed TWO photos, 1. white guy in hot tub with black female, then 2. a white guy with a black female in bed. So perhaps this video was not about Lou Rawls at all... perhaps. Perhaps it is about influencing something else... perhaps. Certainly they forgot the 1. black guy in the hot tub with the white female, and 2. the black guy in bed with the white female. Perhaps. Didn't think we'd see that?

  • @TxLottoPlayersAssn

First of all I would like to say hello!

Secondly ,when I was making the video I've search for romantic pictures of couples.I was not looking colours of skin or anything else..It was only about romance...It was only about love! Now,with all my respect,if you think that it is about something else, then perhaps... it was something that had to do not with the video but perhaps with your thinkings at the time you watched that.... perhaps.

  • @eleonorazervou

Best version ever!!! Sorry Bette.Midler. His voice was just amazing!!!

  • @TxLottoPlayersAssn

Sometimes we point the finger to forest for others to see that.... If then they watch only one tree ... perhaps it is not our mistake! Maybe they need to see the bigger picture!

  • I've always thought sweet Lou did this song better than anyone.

  • How do I get a copy of this song?

  • @jrgladson I really don't know...... But I think if you can search on the internet , you going to find it somewhere ..

  • @jrgladson best buy, wal mart target

  • @jrgladson I found a cd on e-bay. It had this song on it. Try e-bay. You my get lucky. Good luck.

  • I WAS THE WIND BENEATH SOMEONE WINGS AND HE DECIDED TO FLY WITH SOMEONE ELSE!.. :D

I WAS THE ONE WHO TAUGHT HIM HOW TO FLY AGAIN.

ALL I WANTED WAS FOR HIM TO FLY HIGH ONCE AGAIN...AND BEING DUMPED WAS HOW HE THANKED ME!...SILLY RABBI! :D I HATE STUPIED PPL!

  • @maryhadalittlelamb25 I am really sorry about that!!!!

  • @maryhadalittlelamb25 Blows away the Bette Midler version. What a voice!

  • @maryhadalittlelamb25 Sorry he did that to you... Many women dump guys when they run out of money, or whatever... I always wonder how/why men dumped woman. It happens to us all. Best of all things with the next one... yes, silly rabbit. LOL (Official Lou Rawls Fan Club on Facebook)

  • Even his speaking voice is wonderful!

  • No one has been able to sing this song to match lou rawls....it is the best ever, the mans voice is sexy smooth and simply cant be outdone...............................bette midler sucks ass

  • I could not agree more - this is THE version of this song, Lou was such a phantastic singer.....as I see, most of you guys see it the same way, there is no need to add more, but to say THANK YOU LOU FOR HAVING BEEN THERE FOR US!!!

  • @marcominto Agree 100% because Lou was Lou and there was only one Lou Rawls. He was also very kindhearted and tried to be real all the time. We talked often. His overall demeanor is unique to his own family too.. one of a kind. (Official Lou Rawls Fan Club on Facebook)

  • Thank you so much for posting. I heard this song before Bette Midler made her wonderful rendition, but I always enjoyed Lou's version.

  • my favorite version too

  • We don't hear this version enough. Thanks for posting.

  • Have always DREAMED, if GOD BLESSES me w/ a Special Woman that I would play her this song as a Tribute to Her for being my biggest Cheerleader. Lou really captured the emotion unlike anyone possibly could.

  • I had this song (Bette's version) sung at my wedding.

  • This is my favourite version. Lou was cool and a shame he is gone.

  • No se puede cantar mejor este tema.

Sin duda la mejor interpretación que se ha hecho y seguramente que pueda hacerse del mismo.

    10.

  • Lou Rawls was the MAN! No version comes close to this emotional, Original rendition which came out around 1978. The only singer w/ a voice in the same category for strength and romance was Barry White. Thanks Lou you were the Best!

  • Bette's version is more meaningful Bette is the best!! this is too much about the musicians, the lyrics aren't as moving with this arrangement.

  • The song was recorded first by Roger Whittaker in 1982...Even before Gary Morris...I have posted a video of his version...I think he does a great job with it..I can't believe it wasn't a hit before Bette Midler in 1989

  • The song is impossible to find...Hallmark sold a CD with the song on it about 5 or 6 years ago...It has been long out of print...This is the best version of this song.

  • I found a copy of the Lou Rawls version in a thrift store years ago. Lucky! It's the first version I heard and still my favorite.

  • Wow! The good old original version(at least I think it is, though some say a country version by Garry Morris is the original)!

  • This version has ALWAYS been my favorite

  • I have to have this song!!!! Anyone know where I can buy it????? Seriously---I have to have it!!!

  • just download the video and convert it using a flv converter

  • We all have "someone in our shadow"...it's a glorious feeling to realize it before it's too late. Thank you, M.R.

  • Good to hear these comments....I won't begrudge Midler's success, but the Rawls version brings tears to my eyes---I think of my late dad hearing this.

  • same here. My sister thought I was crying for Bette Midler when we both heard it on the radio but I was thinking about Lou's version. I remember hearing it on those baseball legends shows with Tim McCarver. They were playing when they showed the highlights of Willie McCovey through the years.

  • I have been looking for this forever--like someone said, no CDs or whatever. I love Bette Midler but this is still the BEST

  • this is the best version. and i bet nobody knows nows about it. what a shame! can't find this on any sownloads or cd's. Lou rawls voice was incredible!

  • That is true!

  • I knew about it when it came out in '83 and later had mixed feelings about Bette Midler's version ecplipsing this one. At least the song finally became popular, but I never got why Lou Rawls didn't become much better known afterwards.

If the song is not on any compilations, you can find his 1983 LP "When the Night Comes" through GEMM (and pretty much anything else that's ever been released.)

  • Excellent..
