The replacement drummers have no soul like Bill. They just sit there like 'tap tap' whereas Bill beat the drums so hard I thought they would explode. My absolute favorite number one favorite REM song EVER!! I always thought this song was about Jesus 'barking in the street' or telling the gospel plus he was a carpenter!
I always thought that this was a song that only REM could have written. (I also saw this tour, and thought Stipe was crazy, but in the coolest way possible. Became an instant full-fledged fan.)
@severrian Actually I disagree. Bill Rieflin is the best next thing. Perfect drummer for R.E.M. Very Bill Berry-like and he listenend a lot to Berry's drumming. :) Check out some new material, he's perfect for R.E.M.
It seems like Michael has too much energy here floating in his body, and he doesn't know how to deal with it. Great performance though, from one of my favorite R.E.M. songs.
Michael's energy and moves in his early days gave the band a more dynamic live presence, that's for sure. His moves accented those fast songs like this, Harborcoat, 1,000,000, etc. so well. Michael's gotten older and slower, like all of us. They're still great, but I remember THAT R.E.M. and those 2 hour live shows so well.
I saw this tour, too. Saint Paul, MN. Didn't The 3 O'clock open for them? Wow, looking back, those stage mannerisms seem so contrived and pretentious. I was pretty wrapped up in this band at that time, though. I think I cried at their show... geez.
Sorry, not meaning to insult, but: These Germans don't have a clue (or they were tired by this point). Imagine you are on a pogo stick, and you're getting some serious airtime. The WHOLE AUDIENCE on the floor that night was jumping up and down the entire length of the song. Several songs. We were young, it was FUN !
Colleen introduced me to REM in 84/85. I've worn out both sides of that cassette over the years. In 85 I drove up 300 miles to bring her back from New York, drove 300 miles down to see the band at Georgetown University in the gym. (Worlds' biggest mosh pit) Drove her back the next afternoon. Magic.
he had hair:D

the carpenter should rest so that when he tires of one side the other serves him best

The greatest college band of all time. To be an undergrad in the 80's was awesome after these guys came along.

@ullehat
hmmm his performance makes me think more Ian Dury & the blockheads somehow...
Its possibley an intentional mimic as flettery... Kurt Cobain supposedly sang like John Lydon for an entire year before they recorded bleach.

when i saw them open for english beat in north carolina, berry had a teeny, tiny drum kit that roared. he sounded like keith moon.

Listen to Bill Berry swinging on the drums-the new guy doesn't swing.

While this is really cool to watch, I much prefer Michael Stipe's cool, laid back style that he has now.

This is exactly the kind of manic energy that has been missed of late with REM. I sure hope that Accelerate brings it back, at least a little bit.
