  • he had hair:D

  • The replacement drummers have no soul like Bill. They just sit there like 'tap tap' whereas Bill beat the drums so hard I thought they would explode. My absolute favorite number one favorite REM song EVER!! I always thought this song was about Jesus 'barking in the street' or telling the gospel plus he was a carpenter!

  • the carpenter should rest so that when he tires of one side the other serves him best

  • The greatest college band of all time. To be an undergrad in the 80's was awesome after these guys came along.

  • 1:07- 1:12 white dude in the front row...LMAO. WHITE GUY DANCE!

  • @Schimmoller well said, true for me as well

  • Don't be retard, ullehat.

What have his looks got to do with Ian Curtis?

  • What does Michael Stipe pick up and stuff in his pants in the beginning?

  • great dancers in the audience lol

  • I always thought that this was a song that only REM could have written. (I also saw this tour, and thought Stipe was crazy, but in the coolest way possible. Became an instant full-fledged fan.)

No one touched these guys back then . . .

  • Berry looked always supercool behind the drums

  • Very much missed!

  • r.e.m. nebezpecny frajeri!!!

  • I dunno he's kinda rockin it but he's really over doing it.

  • strange he try to sound and look like Ian Curtis from Joy Devision

  • @ullehat

hmmm his performance makes me think more Ian Dury & the blockheads somehow...

Its possibley an intentional mimic as flettery... Kurt Cobain supposedly sang like John Lydon for an entire year before they recorded bleach.

  • when i saw them open for english beat in north carolina, berry had a teeny, tiny drum kit that roared. he sounded like keith moon.

  • Listen to Bill Berry swinging on the drums-the new guy doesn't swing.

  • yeah that is probably why he's got arthritis so bad, you are right. Those WERE the days! Peace out bro.

  • @severrian Actually I disagree. Bill Rieflin is the best next thing. Perfect drummer for R.E.M. Very Bill Berry-like and he listenend a lot to Berry's drumming. :) Check out some new material, he's perfect for R.E.M.

  • @severrian .... i could not agree more strongly ..... I still love REM but I miss Bill and his incredible feel so much

  • Frickin' awesome. Mike Mills one of the great rock bass players - underrated!

  • Mikey Mills is the shit...one of the best! As a bass player I say thanks man for hearing that!

  • @MTBbeer WORD! The guy is beyond...always has been - major asset to this band. And not to mention, harmony singing! Thanks for hearing that! :-)

  • Easily one of REMs most underated songs. What ever happened to guitar based rock, anyway?

  • Wow, look at Stipe move.

  • nice video! xD m

  • This the version between anyone giving two shits about him and the band. He got it after driver 8

  • The version of this song on their 2006 greatest hits CD is worth the price alone.

  • Where he tells the story about what the song is about?

06 - REM - Life And How To Live It [Live At The Muzik Centrum Utrecht Holland 9-14-87]

Yes, that is my favorite ...

  • hes totally lost it !!! (stipe)

  • The scream of the final i remember to Kurt Cobain...this song is my favourite of fables

  • While this is really cool to watch, I much prefer Michael Stipe's cool, laid back style that he has now.

  • This is exactly the kind of manic energy that has been missed of late with REM. I sure hope that Accelerate brings it back, at least a little bit.

  • his hair is blond because he putted mustard in it, i'm not joking;)

  • ROCKS! :D

  • It seems like Michael has too much energy here floating in his body, and he doesn't know how to deal with it. Great performance though, from one of my favorite R.E.M. songs.

  • Does he look like a combination of elvis and bily idol?

  • he played with his image all the time ,might have been done on purpose

  • Michael's energy and moves in his early days gave the band a more dynamic live presence, that's for sure. His moves accented those fast songs like this, Harborcoat, 1,000,000, etc. so well. Michael's gotten older and slower, like all of us. They're still great, but I remember THAT R.E.M. and those 2 hour live shows so well.

  • That is one screaming freaking rave-up.

  • This was 5 days after the Rockpalast show I just put up!

  • I saw this tour, too. Saint Paul, MN. Didn't The 3 O'clock open for them? Wow, looking back, those stage mannerisms seem so contrived and pretentious. I was pretty wrapped up in this band at that time, though. I think I cried at their show... geez.

  • AWESOME

  • God damn this ROCKS! Thanks for a quality version of this performance!

    My rating:

    *****

    Awesome!

  • One of my faves.

  • wow. what energy....I wish they could still pull this off every once in a while

  • I miss these days....I saw them so many times before they became huge....What great memories....

  • Sorry, not meaning to insult, but: These Germans don't have a clue (or they were tired by this point). Imagine you are on a pogo stick, and you're getting some serious airtime. The WHOLE AUDIENCE on the floor that night was jumping up and down the entire length of the song. Several songs. We were young, it was FUN !

  • Colleen introduced me to REM in 84/85. I've worn out both sides of that cassette over the years. In 85 I drove up 300 miles to bring her back from New York, drove 300 miles down to see the band at Georgetown University in the gym. (Worlds' biggest mosh pit) Drove her back the next afternoon. Magic.

  • My favorite song off of Fables!

  • his eyes go right through you in the beggining when he looks up, amazing

  • What the fuck is Michael doing? Haha.

  • haha. I love how he just screams "ahhhhhhh"

  • awesome!!! thank you. if you have anymore please post.

  • fantastic! precious! THANK YOU!!!

  • one of the best REM songs ever

  • i saw them about a week or a two after this was filmed...i saw them in champaign illinois...and then went backstage and met them....it was great....

  • god i love 85 REM!! love 05 rem too, but 85 wow!

  • That's the REM we all fell in love with

  • Yeah! That'd be awesome to see more of this!

  • Wow! If you have the rest of this show, please post it! Fantastic early REM!
