  • Mr billy is so good on the drums.

  • billy grooves his ass off

  • I watch this video at least 1 times a month.. it has everything I strive for in drumming.

  • THE MAN !!

  • 6:43 - Yeah maan your hands are like wind... :DDD

  • A living legend!!!!!!!

  • the snare gods play.......hubba hubba

  • that's the way to play drums! GROOVE AND PASSION (and a little bit of madness like in the end of the video!) :D

  • oh man, that snare....godly

  • 2:40 i love how the congas got him wound up

  • 4 dislikes? Get your arrogant, ignorant asses out of here! lol

  • Billy Cobham has been a huge influence with my style of playing, along with Buddy and Peart. He's a bloody legend.

  • it's a jazz snare

  • @Zammy1794 its his signature snare

  • @Zammy1794 How do you figure? It looks like a yamaha brass to me. With wood hoops.

  • im so lucky to have stood in front of him for an hour while he played a solo at womad 2 years ago, it was great

  • 6:50 saaaaaamba

  • sada3333 had cobham

  • OMG! he got the music in his vains, just flawless

  • does somebody knows , what is the name of the song, and the name of the band ? thanks a lot!

  • sounds like it could be asere, the band he's been touring with recently, not sure which track though.

  • I love the run he did at6:44

  • lol at 1:38. Billy is awesome!

  • a Master. for sure....

  • I saw a clinic he did at a Guitar Center in Dallas years ago. Amazing work!

  • And the reason why he's so dang good is that he was in the blue devils drumcore. Those technique's are a monster!!!!

  • Wish I was that good open handed.

    Whoo Cobham!

  • lool yeah "this guy" is "pretty good"^^

  • the kids will get it when it is time. :)

  • Love the turn up of the glasses at 2.32.. quality

  • this guy came to my school this year for a Jazz exchange concert. He's pretty good.

  • LOL yea he's "pretty good"

  • @Nicar526 Just Pretty Good?..........Billy Cobham issa legend

  • What do you view as "Really good"??

  • Bc I met in '89 at solan beach CA. He uses uses a slight grip hold that uses the stick kicking back in the tip grip between the thumb and 1st finger. The stick bounce is hardly noticable. However the strength in the single stroke bounce is acute from practice and ligament dexterity. Acurate stick bounce comes from practice in over the rim single bounce. Double stroke practice on pillows!

  • Nice to see Bill still at it after all these years. I suddenly feel lazy and worthless, although inspired. I will have to start with some Merengue and Samba lessons as I have two left feet.

  • A monster drummer. For me the snare is too dry though.

  • Billy is King!!!!

  • the great Cobham has gone mad!!

  • interesting setup.....incredible playing and also i have to mention the great snare!

  • Yeah, what snare is that?

  • Try telling him " estan cruzao!" Sounds right, I mean left to me...Haha! Go Billy.

  • Gesh. BC never seems to use the moeller technique, and only relies on stick bounce with the hi-hat and cymbals. It almost looks like him and Tony W mastered the art of "mimicking stick bounce" in their playing style itself! Look how far back he holds the sticks. The end is in the palm of his hand! That makes the fulcrum about 3/4 up from the tip, meaning that he has to be using his wrist to do any bouncing at all! That's friggin' amazing when you think about how fast and cleanly he plays :-)

  • very good observation, my friend

seems chad smith does the same thing, probably why his signature stick is back sticked, ot back weighted.

I find this technique more comfortable, myself....maybe cause of my prior hand and wrist breaks from bmx

    cheers

  • It's why he has those big ass forearms LOL

  • Good golly!

    Golly gee!

    Hot dog!

    Wowie-zowie!

    Mahavishnarameous!

    dgulf

  • Billy Cobham is the father of all black drummers who plays R&B, Soul and pop since 70'. Dennis Chambers, Carter Beauford, John Blackwell and others are sons of Billy on the drums. Billy is the MASTER!!

  • now that IS grO_Ove *drools*

  • billy cobham is such a good drummer and his skill is amazing also that snare drum sounds incredible

  • Billy Cobham is such a powerful drummer with single stroke rolls from hell!! yet he plays with so much finesse and melodic approach! amazing!

  • Absolutely amazing. What touch and style! He's not really hitting all that hard but that touch just makes those drums sing.

I guess this is why he's one of the legends then!

  • what kinda snare drum is this and skin too

  • Probably an evans G1 coated with an internal ring. The snare is Yamaha's billy Cobham model

  • a god

  • With those singles the guy doesn´t need doubles or pressrolls..

  • anyone know what snare hes using!????

  • i really wonder how (with 2 bass drums), does he get his highhat so close to the snare. anyone know? i use a cable hat to get it as close as i can in a 2 bass drumset up but it doesnt feel the same as a regular highhat stand. too much tension

  • They often take the legs off the hi-hat, I´m not sure what Cobham does.

  • I think what he did in this video if he didn't take the legs off that hat was.

Using a two legged stand and angle the legs toward the right, and put the bass drum on the left of the pedal. that way he can move outward and not inward to switch from single to double bass.

  • omg that snare is like sex!!!

  • Hahah man, you got the best camera angle possible.

  • fantastic drummer.. love the snare drum sound

  • oh my god me too

  • pitticcu puru!!

  • I've never seen or heard trap drums played like this, in Latin

music, not even in Carlos Santan's band, who routinely uses trap drums, congas, timbales, and bongos (no disrespect_I love Carlos' work too and him as an artist and person). I think here (especially), Billy is just too awesome and formiddable. I told him so last night, when I saw him and his Spectrum Band at The Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC. Last night was a great show too by the way. I think Billy is just the best!

  • who is he playing with here?

  • Don't say that you didn't bang your head at 3:40!

  • i didnt

  • theres nothing to bang your head to at 3:40

    other than a snare roll

  • Simply the best, Still! Awesome, inspiring and frightening in equal measure for all tub thumpers out in cyberspace!

  • yamaha drums are killer. So is billy's playing

  • omg this guy is out this world. wow.

  • Amazing. Simplicity and creativity... Thats the way :) WOW

  • i love the way he's set a second ride cymbal on his left hand side

  • It's because he plays open handed. he doesn't have a ride cymbal on his right side.

  • I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEE IT TOOOO !!! Vive Billy et la "salsa" !!!!!

  • i love this video

  • Does anyone know what type of snare that is? It sounds beautiful.

  • Looks like his Yamaha signature model.

  • It's no mistake that he feels this music. He was born in Panama.

  • Amazing! The Best! This is my cousin's group "Asere" from Cuba with Billy Cobham, my cousin and musical director is Michel Padron (trumpet and arrangements) Kisses to everybody! Alejandro, Luz brillante! I love everybody!

  • It's nice to see a top notch drum vid that's GROOVY! Not just abstract soloing and technique. Isn't that what drums are all about? Rhythm?

  • look at dis dudes arms

  • How many righty's do you know can ride with their left hand? Open handed drumming at its best!!!!

  • he is really a lefty look how the toms go from small to large...

  • good eye, I didn't notice it

  • why would he have the hi hatt on his left then?

  • Because he's right footed

  • Because he's right footed

  • God Billy is amazing. How does he move so quickly, i mean he's a BIG guy. Awesome!

  • who is he playing with? And what song?

  • This is my cousin's group "Asere" from Cuba with Billy Cobham, my cousin and musical director is Michel Padron (trumpet and arrangements)

  • at about mark 2:30 billy scratches his nose and plays the beat with one hand, and it looke effortless

  • yeah, its normal for a drummer.

  • billy has such incredible technique, and you can finally see it upclose

  • que groove que tiene éste tipo y como se divierte!!

    arriba Billy!!

  • awesome...had the pleasure of seeing this fantastic man @ womadelaide 2007

  • From 7 minutes on it gets really awesome. Billy having so much fun out there

  • just perfect,period.

  • ...he has the same amazing attitude like max roach had.....they play with everybody!!! Marvelous!!!!

  • Sabian endorser Billy Cobham, the greatest drummer alive, during the recent Drumfest 2006 UK tour of Brentwood, Northampton and Birmingham.

SabianVault needs to get his facts straight...

    ;)

  • I could watch this all day... great to see him enjoying himself..(he could play this in his sleep)

  • just wanted to add this to my reply to megaman: Not saying they are better, just saying you should have an array of snares... if it were up to me I would have all sorts of wooden snares in all sorts of sizes and all kinds of metal snares in different sizes. The different sizes and materials all produce different sounds. I mean , unfortunately I don't know of any one snare that does it all.

  • This fellow aint half bad ;)

  • What Kind of wood is billoy's snare drum made out of in this video

  • i think it's his signature maple drum from yamaha.

  • who is the group he is playing with?

  • yeah its a wooden snare

  • alright thanks. I heard wooden snares sound the best and are way better than steel snares. Not to say that steel snares are whack or anything

  • The thing with wooden snares that I dont like. is that they are not as sensitive as thin shelled metal snares. Like metal snares can easily be made 1-3 mm thick ( I prefer 1 or 1.2 mm); the ghost notes really stand out and the dynamic range is just overall better.

  • I meant to say think

  • Does anyone know what heads billy cobham is using for the snare drum and is that a steel snare or wood. I thin it's wood but I'm not sure

  • i think its the evans coated EC2. idk if he switched to evans when this video came out tho

  • At 3:37 he crashes on 2 after the fill...anyone know what cymbal that is next to the left-side ride? It sounds fantastic.

  • its either a HH dark chinese or a terry bozzio radia chinese. I have a radia myself. beautiful cymbals.

  • I think is a splash

  • this video is fuckin ridiculous.

  • true.

  • one word... CONTROL

  • I love the sound of the snare

  • I wanted to see him hit the little drum at least once. :(

  • if you listen and look closely you will realize that he plays it several times. Enjoy! :-)

  • Best seat in the house

  • quadrant 4 with tommy bolin was nice too

  • cospe e sai nadando...

  • this guys is soo minted

  • I was here ^_^

  • I was on his Cuban Band gig in Leeds and the show was hot!!

  • 100% perfection and feeling, Billy's the absolute master of drums

  • perfect
