The reasons are know actually. To achieve his vision of a agrarian communist utopia all people regarded as intellectual, former members of or associated with the former government, non-ethnic Khmers (like Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese) and eventually anyone who they called economic saboteurs (those who could work properly.) A lot of also people died from starvation or overworking. Pol Pot envisioned that only 2 million people were needed for his utopia.
