Of course there's a cigarette in the scene. I WISH I could go back in time and yell at her and say "Ciggs Are Filthy and UnHealthy!!! Chew GUM!" -__- <3 RIP LUCY.
After an uncredited stint as one of the Goldwyn Girls in Roman Scandals (1933) she permanently moved to Hollywood to appear in films. She appeared in many small movie roles in the 1930s as a contract player for RKO Radio Pictures, including a two-reel comedy short with the Three Stooges (Three Little Pigskins, 1934) and a movie with the Marx Brothers (Room Service, 1938).
she is GORGEOUS! the hair the make up. she looks classy...not like what we have today...i think they all put their make up on usin the shotgun method. :/
if i find this movie online or where u borrow movies then i'll watch it, they never had any bad things in old movies. I think they started putting bad stuff in movies in the 60s
What's wrong w/her having a high voice in I Love Lucy? Her high voice in I Love Lucy was her real voice, she had the same voice in The Long Long Trailer & Forever Darling, i liked her high voice, it fit her perfectly.
@zacefronswife100, that wasn't her real voice in I LOVE LUCY. She had a deeper voice during the I LOVE LUCY years, but pushed her voice higher when performing in order to make herself sound younger. That practice is hard on the vocal chords and, ironically, is one of several reasons her voice got deeper in later years. In the following clip from 1954, at 7 minutes and 36 seconds in, you can hear what her real voice sounded like during the I LOVE LUCY years: /watch?v=FiUPVQAmWLI&feature=related
@zacefronswife100, I'm talking about the one where I gave you the link, at the end when she's being interviewed. In the movies you mention, like I LOVE LUCY, she was performing. It's common knowledge that during those years she was raised her pitch when she performed. She had a high voice in her early years and Katharine Hepburn told her it was too high and would be an impediment, so she did screaming exercises to deepen it. Smoking also contributed. But for ILL, she needed a high pitch.
Lucille Ball is like my favorite actress & my idol. Desi Arnaz is my favorite actor & my idol too. And u know what's so good about old movies? They never had sex or swearing or that bad stuff.
Her voice is different than when she did I Love Lucy, she was 40 in I Love Lucy & 20s here. She had a high voice when she was young & in I Love Lucy, but when she got old her voice got deeper.
Lucille Ball was really beautiful when she was young & in I Love Lucy, she must've been 27 in this movie, she was one of the most beautiful actresses back then. Anything w/her must be good, she was one of the best actresses.
This movie is awesome! Just watched it last night. Almost didn't recognize her at first. Such a beautiful young actress! Always beautiful of course ;)
@rachelazw You're right I saw lured a few weeks ago on TCM, I'm not familiar with Two Smart People. Lured was not that good. The Dark Corner is far more superior.
Wow....I can't believe this is the same woman who played Lucy. It really shows how diverse she is as an actress. I never knew she had a range like that.

@cestlaverite OK, I forgot about Stone Pillow which she did well. Maybe it was the B material/writing Ball had to work with. Burnett had some juicier stuff....Pete n' Tille, Friendly Fire, Four Seasons.....
After having watched I Love Lucy so much, it was very strange for me to see Lucille Ball in 1940s dress and hair... But she was stunningly beautiful!!! I'll have to find more clips of her younger days.
wow she sounds so different, she sounds, "normal" i guess, she isnt doing that lucy "oooo!" type of whiny high pitched voice. wow, lucille sure was a looker back in the day, i mean absoljutly stunning.
@StillWalkTWH well i can explain why. because hollywood and the loss of the hays ;production code. men and women werent allowed to curse and say horrible things at each other in movies and people of the time dressed up more when they went out. no "ghetto" styles or hip hop or grunge or bell bottom jeans, it was skirts and dresses for women, and suits and hats for men. that is the hollywood i miss, the hollywood of the golden age.
Great clip. Nowadays we are very used to method actors that whenever you see old movies, it feels kind of awkward the way they act. Things such as the kiss she gave him, the poses when he speaks...Obviously I am not critizicing, just find it an interesting detail. Imagine people acting like this on nowadays movies. She looks beautiful here.
@lalbruiz Wow, I wasn´t aware of my terrible grammar in the first line on this comment, I will blame it on the fact that it is late and I am falling asleep, LOL. Apologies for the bad grammar, but hope the idea gets through.
Yes, she was very pretty here, but I think she looked even better later on. The way her eyes were made up during the 'I Love Lucy' period really emphasized her enormous eyes.
@KrisHesse Usually yes, even though "Mame" got a bad review after she was famous 4 that film back in 1974. But maybe back in '74, it got a good review. I enjoyed watching Lucy in the famous reruns of "I Love Lucy", "The Lucy Show", and "Here's Lucy" since the 70's. But now, I became more interested in her dramatic entertainment such as this beautiful film of hers from 1938. Ever c 1 of Lucy's other serious films like "The Dark Corner"? Except 4 1 scene, it was very nice and good.
"Well, go on. This isn't very easy, either." what a classic line; and Lucy pulls it off perfectly! What a great (totally underated, at the time) movie actress! And a real doll, too!
wow, lucille was always beautiful...but the thing is im so use to seeing her as a comedian and expecting to make me laugh, that its hard for me to see her act dramatic......but she's good doing both =)
In her early show-biz days, she was seen more as a "hottie" than a "funny lady". She even appeared (uncredited) as a chorus girl in "Big Production Numbers".
good show to Lucy!! the acting was a little old, but for her timed style movie she did brilliantly... i only say for her time is because movies now the women would be like< "aww hell no, you said that you've been cheating on me?" this is when women had to take whatever men did to them
OK, stop. Both side are way too carried away. She looks great. No, she was not Rita Hayworth or Ava Gardner, but she was easy on the eyes. And this was a great clip. She nailed what it was like to be dropped and hold herself together.
I love the line she says... you're not going to be one of those hubands. I thought of Desi. He thought through everything. Was credited with the 3 camera thing, but he knew who the star was and was not intimdated in the least
@orangr She was a great actress any way you slice it. What do you mean carried away? Lucy was more than Hayworth or Gardner ever could be. Looks are subjective but Lucille Ball was dreamy and cute and some pictures (alot) of her are just stunning. She has Two stars on the Hollywood walk of fame. One for Film and One for T.V. She was the very first female televison Executive. She was Crowned by Hollywood itself as the First lady of Television and the Queen of Comedy. She will always be a STAR!
@licxstar You've kind of cherry picked through my post. I've known several people close to Lucille Ball. I have been a fan of hers since I first saw her on TV (about 50 years ago). I believe she is easily among the VERY TOP performing artists of the 20th Century.
@oranger2525 My appologies if you feel I have cherry picked...I was just wondering what you meant by your comment "Ok, stop. Both sides are way two carred away" I am assuming you were reffering to the previous comentary stating how stunning she was. Please elaborate if you don't mind. I also have been a fan for about 40 years and am a Cuban american entertainer.
@licxstar several posters were not kind regarding Lucy's looks. others were saying she was nearly Marilyn Monroe. i was just saying get real. she looks great and I she is one of the most talented people in show biz history.
GORGEOUS LUCILLE! I'm picturing the 3 of these characters on The Jerry Springer Show..."I've Got A Secret To Reveal" At the end of the clip, they'd all be on the floor hitting each other and being pulled apart by the bouncers LOL
wow! I saw The Big Street and she was great in that. I never think of her as beautiful, just because when I watch Lucy the adjectives that come to mind our "funny" "crazy" and other humorous stuff..but when I stop to just look at her and not think of other words she really is stunning. So beautiful!
@webkinzrocks300 , Carol Burnett has commented that Lucy's background as a dramatic actress is why her comedy worked so well: it gave her a base to make her comedy believable.
wow I'm used to her I love lucy voice, she seems so much different here. She really is a diverse actress, and like a lot of people are saying beautiful. I never noticed until now. I never found her unattractive, but her beauty thrives here.
She really was multi-talented. It's a different experience watching her in drama instead of comedy.. It's lovely to see that she posses so much skill, that she could easily play into two different genres =)
@TheMikejones87... Apparently she was beautiful becuase all the people watching this think she was, And she was BEAUTIFUL and TALENTED... So shut up....she was just as beautiful as Elizabeth Taylor, Dorothy Dandridge, Ava Gardener and Marilyn Monron.. And apparently a lot more popular becuase the I Love Lucy product is still popular and people still talk about Lucille Ball.. I dont hear people talking about other people like that...
@TheMikejones87... Apparently she was beautiful becuase all the people watching this think she was, And she was BEAUTIFUL and TALENTED... @hachie7189027 Typical response I never questioned Lucille Ball's talent I love her as well she is one of my all time favorite stars. The fact remains Lucille Ball was not a beauty queen. She was pretty and attractive but she was not someone who was beautiful. Again Her talent is not in question here I said she was not a beauty and she was not.
@princesssassy19 Alot of you people do not know what real beauty is, Elizabeth taylor, Dorothy Dandridge, Ava Gardener and marilyn monroe were beautiful. No one would describe Lucille Ball as a beautiful woman. She was attractive but no beauty!!!!
@TheMikejones87 , um, she was beautiful. How can you look at her and say differently? Her early career as a top model certainly didn't happen because she was homely. And MGM didn't showcase actresses in glamor roles if they didn't have the looks. You have an "interesting" take on beauty.
@rachelazw Top models are not necessarily beauty queens Lucille Ball never really made it in movies because she was not a Jean Harlow, or Ava Gardener. Lucille Ball made B-movies she was a top MGM model but she was not a beautiful woman. Joan Crawford was another attractive woman at mgm and she was Queen of the lot but she was not a beauty sorry those are the facts.
The Facts!?!? Who r u? Joe Friday? "These are the facts Ma'am!'
She was more than beautiful! She was stunning! Tons of what we know now as curly red hair. Huge blue eyes. Tall long-legged and shapely. And I'm a straight "say it loud I'm a beautiful black and proud woman!"What I'm saying (and THESE ARE THE FACTS) Lucille Ball was is will always be beautiful!!!!
@early60srcool No one is denying Lucille Ball was an attractive woman but being pretty and or attractive is not the same thing as being beautiful. Lucille Ball was pretty but she was not beautiful. Dorothy Dandridge is someone you can call beautiful, Elizabeth Taylor was beautiful, Ava Gardener another beauty. Lucy was a very attractive woman but she was not beautiful.
@TheMikejones87 , you're a moron. Lucille Ball was a beautiful woman. She was also successful in movies. Movies did not make her a superstar, but she was still a star. Search Google News and see the kind of press she was getting back in the days BEFORE I Love Lucy. She had a solid career, certainly as successful as Dorothy Dandridge, and was still getting top-billing as she approached 40, but I Love Lucy was such a phenomenon that it completely overshadowed her earlier career.
@vidayverdad2 There is no need to call me names and I do not give a goddamn what you say Lucille Ball was a attractive woman and I would say she was pretty but she was no beauty. Dorothy Dandridge's career would've been much better if hollywood was not so damn racist back in the day. Anyway I am over this you people can clearly look at Ball and say she was attractive but beautiful get the fuck outta here lol.
@TheMikejones87 , she modeled for Hattie Carnegie, the top fashion designer in those days, whose models were the cream of the crop. Then she got brought out to Hollywood as a Goldwyn Girl, purely on the basis of her looks. By the 1940s, she was being dubbed Technicolor Tessie. And if you think a studio like MGM (the premiere studio back then) would star her in some of it's most glamorous roles if she weren't beautiful, then you know nothing about movies . . . or beauty for that matter.
@TheMikejones87 , yeah, it's strange how Lucille Ball ended up on a popular pin-up poster during WWII when she wasn't even beautiful. Give me an f'n break! Go to the website moviemaidens. They have lists of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood by decade. And right smack dab in the middle of the list for the most beautiful actresses of the 1940s, Lucille Ball.
@rachelazw Just because someone made onto a pin-up poster does not mean they are beautiful Lucille Ball was an attractive woman she was not beautiful I dont care what moviemaiden says Lucy was pretty but not beautiful so stop it.
Lucille Ball was selected for the pin-up poster because she was beautiful, moron. MGM gave her glamorous starring roles because she was beautiful, moron. Goldwyn brought her out to Hollywood as a Goldwyn Girl because she was beautiful. BEAUTY(!!!) magazines featured her because she was beautiful. Hattie Carnegie signed her as a model because she was beautiful. Get your head out of your ass.
@rachelazw The opinion of a few obsessed fans on this board is the opinion of the majority so shut the fuck up there is and was nothing beautiful about Lucille Ball bitch.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@vidayverdad2 You people are nuts if you think Lucille Ball was beatiful she has never been referred to as a sex symbol or beauty. I do not give a shit about her old mgm days as a model there are models who are unattractive. I love Lucille Ball god knows I do but she was not beautiful and thats thats. Its your opinion she is beautiful she did make it as a full fledge sex siren because she was not a beauty.
@TheMikejones87, you're ignorant. Yes, her image at one point was as a screen siren. But she chose not to limit herself to that. Still she was a great beauty. For me, blue eyes are the best, and her eyes were the biggest, bluest, & brightest. She had a perfect nose that was amazing in profile. And she had the most amazing cheekbones of any actress I know. And great legs to top it off. She was dubbed Technicolor Tessie because she was considered to have the most perfect features for color movies.
@TheMikejones87 ok I try not to get involved in this kind of drama but... GET THE HELL OVER YOURSELF! Because she wasn't a green m&m she wasn't beautiful?! You're the one who's "nuts"! If the beauty standard was Sarah Jessica Parker you might think Catherine Zeta-Jones was unattractive. Beauty is subjective, so don't say "because she was not a beauty" like it was a fact, it is your opinion and in MY opinion, she's gorgeous.
@TheMikejones87 Okay?? Are you just trolling or what? Lucy was a red-haired Marilyn Monroe in many ways back in her MGM days before I Love Lucy. I still think she was beautiful in I Love Lucy. After that she seemed to really age, no doubt due to years of heavy smoking and by that time she was over 50.
@TheMikejones87 , for at least the first decade of her movie career, in practically every film she was in, she was cast as the woman all the men were after and that the women were jealous of. In the movie Best Foot Forward, she played herself, Lucille Ball, Movie Star. And the whole plot of that movie revolved around her image at the time as a beautiful and sexy movie star. That was 1943 and that WAS her image then -- not as a comedienne, but as a gorgeous actress.
@TheMikejones87, and just because you have a head on your shoulders doesn't mean there's a brain inside it. People put facts in front of you but you stupidly stick with this "Lucille Ball was not beautiful" nonsense with no facts on your side. Obviously you have a hard time admitting you're wrong. And the more you continue down this path, the more stupid you make yourself look. You may have an opinion, but that's all it is: an opinion. And your opinion is out of touch with the vast majority.
@TheMikejones87 Lucille Ball was stunning! Hardly compared to 99% of the hootchie-mamma 'hoes you see on tv/movies today. The Golden Age of Film had it all. You will not see that anywhere on screen today.
I like it when lady's are suppose to wear dresses before..but now lady's wear clothes that i don't know..half naked??? i think women are not that feminin and sweer anymore..no offense..i'm a girl too...
If you look at young actresses back then, they were all much more pretty than girls today. I think it was because of the lack of chemicals in food such as there are in fast food.
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that she's not playing "Lucy." We're so used to that Lucy character, who has certain mannerisms and carries herself in a certain way, talks in a certain way, expresses herself in a certain way with her face and movements, and none of those "Lucyisms" that make her TV character unique are present here.
@vieetverite That's true. Her voice in general became so raspy in the 1960's though... it's interesting to hear it when it was still really really young.
to Foxx988, Lucille Ball was not only an actress & a comical genius but she also owed & was head of RKO Studios for several years. As any women today in such a position can tell you, she was called a "bitch" for the same behavior her male counterparts were called "savvy businessmen."
Of course there's a cigarette in the scene. I WISH I could go back in time and yell at her and say "Ciggs Are Filthy and UnHealthy!!! Chew GUM!" -__- <3 RIP LUCY.

Things such as the kiss she gave him, the poses when he speaks...Obviously I am not critizicing, just find it an interesting detail. Imagine people acting like this on nowadays movies. She looks beautiful here.

In her early show-biz days, she was seen more as a "hottie" than a "funny lady". She even appeared (uncredited) as a chorus girl in "Big Production Numbers".

good show to Lucy!! the acting was a little old, but for her timed style movie she did brilliantly... i only say for her time is because movies now the women would be like< "aww hell no, you said that you've been cheating on me?" this is when women had to take whatever men did to them

awarren92 1 year ago
She was a genius on I Love Lucy.
oranger2525 1 year ago

I believe she is easily among the VERY TOP performing artists of the 20th Century.
oranger2525 1 year ago
@oranger2525 My appologies if you feel I have cherry picked...I was just wondering what you meant by your comment "Ok, stop. Both sides are way two carred away" I am assuming you were reffering to the previous comentary stating how stunning she was. Please elaborate if you don't mind. I also have been a fan for about 40 years and am a Cuban american entertainer.

@licxstar several posters were not kind regarding Lucy's looks. others were saying she was nearly Marilyn Monroe. i was just saying get real. she looks great and I she is one of the most talented people in show biz history.

TheMikejones87 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87 I think the masses would disagree with that. Lucille Ball was stunningly beautiful. She was among the top beauties of her time.

princesssassy19 1 year ago
@princesssassy19 Alot of you people do not know what real beauty is, Elizabeth taylor, Dorothy Dandridge, Ava Gardener and marilyn monroe were beautiful. No one would describe Lucille Ball as a beautiful woman. She was attractive but no beauty!!!!
TheMikejones87 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87 , um, she was beautiful. How can you look at her and say differently? Her early career as a top model certainly didn't happen because she was homely. And MGM didn't showcase actresses in glamor roles if they didn't have the looks. You have an "interesting" take on beauty.
rachelazw 1 year ago
@rachelazw Top models are not necessarily beauty queens Lucille Ball never really made it in movies because she was not a Jean Harlow, or Ava Gardener. Lucille Ball made B-movies she was a top MGM model but she was not a beautiful woman. Joan Crawford was another attractive woman at mgm and she was Queen of the lot but she was not a beauty sorry those are the facts.
TheMikejones87 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87
The Facts!?!? Who r u? Joe Friday? "These are the facts Ma'am!'
She was more than beautiful! She was stunning! Tons of what we know now as curly red hair. Huge blue eyes. Tall long-legged and shapely. And I'm a straight "say it loud I'm a beautiful black and proud woman!"What I'm saying (and THESE ARE THE FACTS) Lucille Ball was is will always be beautiful!!!!
early60srcool 1 year ago
@early60srcool No one is denying Lucille Ball was an attractive woman but being pretty and or attractive is not the same thing as being beautiful. Lucille Ball was pretty but she was not beautiful. Dorothy Dandridge is someone you can call beautiful, Elizabeth Taylor was beautiful, Ava Gardener another beauty. Lucy was a very attractive woman but she was not beautiful.
TheMikejones87 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87 , you're a moron. Lucille Ball was a beautiful woman. She was also successful in movies. Movies did not make her a superstar, but she was still a star. Search Google News and see the kind of press she was getting back in the days BEFORE I Love Lucy. She had a solid career, certainly as successful as Dorothy Dandridge, and was still getting top-billing as she approached 40, but I Love Lucy was such a phenomenon that it completely overshadowed her earlier career.
vidayverdad2 1 year ago 2
@vidayverdad2 There is no need to call me names and I do not give a goddamn what you say Lucille Ball was a attractive woman and I would say she was pretty but she was no beauty. Dorothy Dandridge's career would've been much better if hollywood was not so damn racist back in the day. Anyway I am over this you people can clearly look at Ball and say she was attractive but beautiful get the fuck outta here lol.
TheMikejones87 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87 you have an opinion and that's fine, what's your opinion on some one being beautiful?
julie11061 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87 , she modeled for Hattie Carnegie, the top fashion designer in those days, whose models were the cream of the crop. Then she got brought out to Hollywood as a Goldwyn Girl, purely on the basis of her looks. By the 1940s, she was being dubbed Technicolor Tessie. And if you think a studio like MGM (the premiere studio back then) would star her in some of it's most glamorous roles if she weren't beautiful, then you know nothing about movies . . . or beauty for that matter.
vidayverdad2 1 year ago 2
@TheMikejones87 , yeah, it's strange how Lucille Ball ended up on a popular pin-up poster during WWII when she wasn't even beautiful. Give me an f'n break! Go to the website moviemaidens. They have lists of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood by decade. And right smack dab in the middle of the list for the most beautiful actresses of the 1940s, Lucille Ball.
rachelazw 1 year ago
@rachelazw Just because someone made onto a pin-up poster does not mean they are beautiful Lucille Ball was an attractive woman she was not beautiful I dont care what moviemaiden says Lucy was pretty but not beautiful so stop it.
TheMikejones87 1 year ago
Lucille Ball was selected for the pin-up poster because she was beautiful, moron. MGM gave her glamorous starring roles because she was beautiful, moron. Goldwyn brought her out to Hollywood as a Goldwyn Girl because she was beautiful. BEAUTY(!!!) magazines featured her because she was beautiful. Hattie Carnegie signed her as a model because she was beautiful. Get your head out of your ass.
rachelazw 1 year ago 2
@rachelazw The opinion of a few obsessed fans on this board is the opinion of the majority so shut the fuck up there is and was nothing beautiful about Lucille Ball bitch.

TheMikejones87 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87 "Its your opinion she is beautiful she did make it as a full fledge sex siren because she was not a beauty."
Any chance you could translate into normal, standard English?
TroyOi 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87, you're ignorant. Yes, her image at one point was as a screen siren. But she chose not to limit herself to that. Still she was a great beauty. For me, blue eyes are the best, and her eyes were the biggest, bluest, & brightest. She had a perfect nose that was amazing in profile. And she had the most amazing cheekbones of any actress I know. And great legs to top it off. She was dubbed Technicolor Tessie because she was considered to have the most perfect features for color movies.
Beejjjjjj 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87
I must say I disagree with you. In my eyes Lucille is a great beauty (lovely face, eyes and mouth + slim figure).
- Who, in your opinion, is beautiful - Jennifer Garner, with irregular features and a gummy smile?
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
ullaforsman 1 year ago 2
@TheMikejones87 ok I try not to get involved in this kind of drama but... GET THE HELL OVER YOURSELF! Because she wasn't a green m&m she wasn't beautiful?! You're the one who's "nuts"! If the beauty standard was Sarah Jessica Parker you might think Catherine Zeta-Jones was unattractive. Beauty is subjective, so don't say "because she was not a beauty" like it was a fact, it is your opinion and in MY opinion, she's gorgeous.
TheatreFanatic4eva 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87 Okay?? Are you just trolling or what? Lucy was a red-haired Marilyn Monroe in many ways back in her MGM days before I Love Lucy. I still think she was beautiful in I Love Lucy. After that she seemed to really age, no doubt due to years of heavy smoking and by that time she was over 50.
bjoh249 1 year ago
@TheMikejones87 , for at least the first decade of her movie career, in practically every film she was in, she was cast as the woman all the men were after and that the women were jealous of. In the movie Best Foot Forward, she played herself, Lucille Ball, Movie Star. And the whole plot of that movie revolved around her image at the time as a beautiful and sexy movie star. That was 1943 and that WAS her image then -- not as a comedienne, but as a gorgeous actress.
Beejjjjjj 1 year ago 2
@TheMikejones87, and just because you have a head on your shoulders doesn't mean there's a brain inside it. People put facts in front of you but you stupidly stick with this "Lucille Ball was not beautiful" nonsense with no facts on your side. Obviously you have a hard time admitting you're wrong. And the more you continue down this path, the more stupid you make yourself look. You may have an opinion, but that's all it is: an opinion. And your opinion is out of touch with the vast majority.
rachelazw 1 year ago 2
@TheMikejones87 everyone is beautiful, if u think someone is not beautiful, then get over it u dont have to make a huge deal about it.

@TheMikejones87 Lucille Ball was stunning! Hardly compared to 99% of the hootchie-mamma 'hoes you see on tv/movies today. The Golden Age of Film had it all. You will not see that anywhere on screen today.
