True, but there are a lot of nice additions in Mother 2, and there's a lot more direction. I got lost quite often in the original Mother.

Actually, yes, it does in fact have the same theme. You know how it sounds similar to "Battle with a Dangerous Foe" (or whatever it's called)? That's because they because they both have that same melody which makes it a theme.
