@irocurpolkadotsox Shaving them is actually okay. But it's a good idea to brush them while their fur is growing back to make sure it doesn't grow back matted or clumped. We've shaved my samoyed every year and his fur hasn't grown back matted or clumped yet because we brush it while it's growing. It's also a smart idea to use a mixture of cutting and shaving rather than just using one or the other. And DON'T shave it too close to the skin as they have fair skin that can get burnt easily.

I can't tell you if one dog will get along with another, without knowing the dogs involved. Both my sams play well with other dogs. They have a loving, happy personality. All dogs can be chewers if they are bored, or don't have other outlets for their chewing needs. My dogs only chew their chew-toys, or bullsticks, or bones. Sam females weigh between 38 and 50 pounds, and stand as small as 16" at the shoulder to 20" at the shoulder. I've seen bigger, but it isn't typical.

Yes, samoyeds are quite the chewers at around 1-1/2 to 2 yrs of age, possibly even earlier. This is from my experience owning one. He is now almost 12 years old, but once you get through that stage where they chew everything it is much better. We decided to make our Samoyed an indoor dog, so as you can imagine, we had a lot of furniture and miscellaneous items damaged (dinner table legs, etc.)
P.S. We had a male, and he is a medium sized dog. Very friendly, very sweet

You do not hit a Samoyed (mutual respect. a must) You cannot tie them up in the yard use a kennel. They are domesticated wolves and if they are in a group dog sled team they form the wolf structure head dog head bitch..The Dog at about 2 years becomes aloof and regal and is the ruler.

My guess is that it depends on the individual. Of course, I am no dog expert so perhaps my dog is just the exception to the rule ^^

@mcf7021 Samoyeds are hypoallergenic. Yes they shed a lot, but its more like hair. They don't have the dander that is attached to the fur of most dogs. I had a samoyed for years, never had an allergic reaction to her, but I'm allergic to every other dog I've encountered. Especially my aunt's Syberian Husky. Very dense, thick fur that everything sticks to, lots of dander!

Samoyeds like to be with the family, and not left alone in the back yard to bark at the back door. They were bred to herd reindeer and to keep the kids warm at night, and take care of the family. They like exercise. I walk mine every day.
When I get out of college I probably want to get a samoyed. I already have a chow chow and a gloden retriever, I don't think I'm ready for three dogs. XD
Yes, crate training any puppy is a great idea. My dogs like their crate. We only used them overnight for a couple of months, and then we still use the crate if we are going to be gone for more than half an hour - will finally stop when they are totally out of the puppy (chewing) stage. They like their crates. The often go in there on their own during the day for a nap... we just always have the door open.
would you recommend crate training a samoyed? we are getting a samoyed puppy in a few weeks and by that time he will be about 9 weeks. I dont know if I should crate train. Can you give me any advice
They "blow" their coat once a year for boys, and 2x a year for girls. They are a double-coated breed, and they rid themselves of the undercoat and grow a new one. Hope that helps.

Sams are family dogs - meaning you can't get one and have it live outside. It wants to be with its peeps. For hair, sams "blow" their coat 2x a year for girls, and once a year for boys. They are a double-coated breed.
Before buying a Samoyed pup ask if the breeders smoke. Those toxins can possibly cause or add to genetic damage. Also it's unfair to subject these most special of canines to any avoidable fire hazard. People who set themselves up as morally superior and "keepers of the flame" in a breed, if known to be smokers, should be disregarded and not accorded any respect. Please don't smoke if you have pets, it's a disservice to these innocent trusting creatures. Going outside to smoke isn't enough.
Please go to your local pharmacy and get some urine test strips. Check your dog for glucose in his urine. It's common for older samoyeds to develope diabetes. If he's passing glucose...you'll need to get a freestyle meter...test him...and give him insulin shots. This may help slow down the progression of cataracts...if that's what's causing it. I could just be old age though.
Try benfotiamine instead of insulin it's safer AND more powerful. In aged Samoyed with walking/standing issue, suspect gout crystals in lower spine (NOT hips NO Rimadyl). Shave hair on back where tail curls apply roll on DMSO it CURED that problem in my older dog NOTHING else worked or came close as usual pharma prostitute veterinarians said NOTHING about DMSO. Try giving dog taurine & riboflavin & ginkgo for retinal support

Samoyeds are some of the most well-natured dogs I have ever seen, almost uncanny is their instinctive empathy twoards humans. Probably from many generations of close work with us.
Attack cats? Hardy chases our cat sometimes, but he also plays with her. Look for the video of them together on the bed. Taylor likes to chase Taylor, but has never really got up close to her. I can't really imagine a sam attacking a cat, but they will definitely want to play.
Do samoyeds attack cats? I wanted to get a huskey but I cant since I heard they attack cats. And these dogs are just as awesome. But again, I can't get one if it will attack my cats.
No dog will attack your kitties if you get them as a puppy and raise them with the cats. They will come to see the cats as family if you raise them together correctly. Try an alaskan malamute if you want a dog that looks a lot like a husky.
Well I've had a samoyed called Lexie for a bout 2 months now. And yes she chases my cats, but otherwise she is pretty much perfect. Thanks for the info anyway.
Sams are reliable good natured. We got our first before we had kids, because we knew they were all of the things you described. Hardy is our 4th, and smart, playful, friendly,loyal. They are the best breed :)
I used to have a samoyed, he was the best dog I've ever had... Very smart, playful, friendly, picked up tricks very fast (commands to sit etc), never bitten me or anyone else, loyal. I wonder if all samoyeds have these traits, or we were so lucky with ours.

Samoyeds are terrible beggars in the kitchen! Mine taught his best friend, a Persian cat, to beg with him. The two of them would stand around in the kitchen waiting for a tidbit. I'd throw one to the dog, who would instantly eat it, and give one to the cat, who would never eat it but guard it with his front paws. Eventually he would leave and the waiting dog would eat it.
Wil got a degenerative nerve condition in his spine. We fought the fight for over 6 months, but nothing worked. It was so so sad, and so awful. David wanted another boy and I couldn't find him an adolescent, so we went with a puppy.

would you recommend crate training a samoyed? we are getting a samoyed puppy in a few weeks and by that time he will be about 9 weeks. I dont know if I should crate train. Can you give me any advice

They "blow" their coat once a year for boys, and 2x a year for girls. They are a double-coated breed, and they rid themselves of the undercoat and grow a new one. Hope that helps.

Sams are family dogs - meaning you can't get one and have it live outside. It wants to be with its peeps. For hair, sams "blow" their coat 2x a year for girls, and once a year for boys. They are a double-coated breed.

Before buying a Samoyed pup ask if the breeders smoke. Those toxins can possibly cause or add to genetic damage. Also it's unfair to subject these most special of canines to any avoidable fire hazard. People who set themselves up as morally superior and "keepers of the flame" in a breed, if known to be smokers, should be disregarded and not accorded any respect. Please don't smoke if you have pets, it's a disservice to these innocent trusting creatures. Going outside to smoke isn't enough.

I got a samoyed.
He is 10-11 years old and howls at me to say good morning or good afternoon.
He is very kind,but the poor fellah has eye problems right now.
I hope there is a way to prevent him from going blind

Please go to your local pharmacy and get some urine test strips. Check your dog for glucose in his urine. It's common for older samoyeds to develope diabetes. If he's passing glucose...you'll need to get a freestyle meter...test him...and give him insulin shots. This may help slow down the progression of cataracts...if that's what's causing it. I could just be old age though.

Try benfotiamine instead of insulin it's safer AND more powerful. In aged Samoyed with walking/standing issue, suspect gout crystals in lower spine (NOT hips NO Rimadyl). Shave hair on back where tail curls apply roll on DMSO it CURED that problem in my older dog NOTHING else worked or came close as usual pharma prostitute veterinarians said NOTHING about DMSO. Try giving dog taurine & riboflavin & ginkgo for retinal support

So cute, I have two females Natasha and Nicole (mother and daughter respectively) one of Nicole's puppies wich I called 'cody' used to do the same thing.
It's a shame that they grown very fast by the time they're 5 or 6 months are huge!

Many are meant to be show dogs so most people get them from breeders which might make them more expensive but they are worth it!
I still miss my Samoyed so much, stubborn little guy but definitely the best pet Ive ever had.

Samoyeds are some of the most well-natured dogs I have ever seen, almost uncanny is their instinctive empathy twoards humans. Probably from many generations of close work with us.

Attack cats? Hardy chases our cat sometimes, but he also plays with her. Look for the video of them together on the bed. Taylor likes to chase Taylor, but has never really got up close to her. I can't really imagine a sam attacking a cat, but they will definitely want to play.

Do samoyeds attack cats? I wanted to get a huskey but I cant since I heard they attack cats. And these dogs are just as awesome. But again, I can't get one if it will attack my cats.

No dog will attack your kitties if you get them as a puppy and raise them with the cats. They will come to see the cats as family if you raise them together correctly. Try an alaskan malamute if you want a dog that looks a lot like a husky.

Well I've had a samoyed called Lexie for a bout 2 months now. And yes she chases my cats, but otherwise she is pretty much perfect. Thanks for the info anyway.

Sams are reliable good natured. We got our first before we had kids, because we knew they were all of the things you described. Hardy is our 4th, and smart, playful, friendly,loyal. They are the best breed :)

I used to have a samoyed, he was the best dog I've ever had... Very smart, playful, friendly, picked up tricks very fast (commands to sit etc), never bitten me or anyone else, loyal. I wonder if all samoyeds have these traits, or we were so lucky with ours.

He was right around 4 months when this video was taken. His mother talks, so some of the talking must be hereditary!

Samoyeds are terrible beggars in the kitchen! Mine taught his best friend, a Persian cat, to beg with him. The two of them would stand around in the kitchen waiting for a tidbit. I'd throw one to the dog, who would instantly eat it, and give one to the cat, who would never eat it but guard it with his front paws. Eventually he would leave and the waiting dog would eat it.

Wil got a degenerative nerve condition in his spine. We fought the fight for over 6 months, but nothing worked. It was so so sad, and so awful. David wanted another boy and I couldn't find him an adolescent, so we went with a puppy.
