Just because its not as magnetic as the other one does not mean that its not a meteorite. Have they been trained in meteorite detection. There should be a 4 step process to determine if its of meteorite quality. This is the reason we started our meteorite testing facility in Kansas.
you can also send them to the kansas meteorite association for testing, you can find them here, kansasmeteoriteassociation(dot)weebly(dot)com good luck
Just because there is no fusion crust doesnt mean its not a meteorite, maybe its been on the earth a long time and the fusion crust wore off, and if it has more stone content, than iron, it wont stick to a magnet as well as a solid iron meteorite.
Okay i walked my dog, i turned around, and when i looked again i saw that little pile of fuming matter that smelled really bad and had to have felled down from the sky so i picked it up and I'm gonna send it to you guys for analysis in a brown envelope.
We have some rock in our house that might be a meteorite. We aren't quite sure though. It's very heavy, has some funky rust-like spots, and seems to have crater-like holes. We haven't tested for any magnetic strength though.
if you did find one and sent it to them for testing and they knew it was a meteorite, would they let you keep it? Or would they just say forget you and send you back a lump of coal or soemthing?
A highly doubt they do it for free just out of the goodness of thier hearts and that we pay taxes. most likely the collect data from them and record them.
well yeah, I don't think they would do it for free if it didn't benifit them at all. Thats valuable information that can be put to good use. So it's free on our part, but they also gain from it by recording the data and sending it back. They also do the same thing with fossils.
The iron meteorite is what I have then! I have always wondered if it was and the textures, luster, and looks of theirs looks almost exactly like mine but they have a smaller one. My rock ahs a blackish material marking to. I'm pretty glad that I have it now. :3
do they return the meteorite/rock back?

It HAS to be a meteorite, i can see no other explanation that it came from outer space.
I hope it ends up in a museum with my name under it.

maybe it's poo eject from a plane...
yougotpwned123123 3 years ago
You're right, maybe some pilot opened the window and took a dump.
But what if it was a UFO pilot, AHA!
I'm gonna send it anyway for analysis.

Well, I don't think it's worth quite that much. =D But if it was a meteorite, it would definitely be worth some money

Lol, they'll probably stop this. People could just easily send in all kinds of crap just to annoy these scientists. This is still cool though.
