It is a real shame that kid had to drop out of high school in his senior year to find work to help out his family. A wonderful thought and act, but without a high school diploma, work is not easy to find. I feel sorry for him and his family.

@jahabdank Levels of poverty differ from culture to culture, so I'm not going to push the issue, but they were living in a van before the motel. The kids were washing in a department store bathroom before school. This is poverty by American standards, but still better than the extreme conditions for people in third world countries who can't even find clean water with which to wash or drink. If that's the point, then I agree.

It's a good sign that people notice things like that early and have higher standards of what they consider poverty compared to other countries because it means higher chances of getting out of the mess before the country is flushed down you know what and becomes the few halves and a LOT have-nots. Terminology is the last thing to worry about in these situations
@jahabdank OH please, just because in some countries it's not "bad" or "homeless" until you're on the streets doesn't mean US has to do the same. So what they're used to being "rich"? They are less likely to take the lies from everyone who gets rich at their expense and more likely to demand that all those in power quit stealing and getting corrupted. They are a lot likely to get to a solution faster than those that wait until conditions REALLY go down then suddenly say "what happened?"

Americans have a different point of view of what is poverty. There, a poor guy earns 24,000 a year, have a house (or at least pay rent) with heat and a car, even if it lacks gas or tax payments. In 3rd world countries, the poor is the one that makes 5k a year, lives in a slum and goes to work in subways twice as crowded and 10 times more dangerous than ny ones. Forgot to mention nutrition problems.

you know i can realate. we were the same in my family vactions and such, when the ecomony went bad my dad got his pay cut. and my mom couldnt work due to some medical issues. we ended up loosing our home. we went to food banks to get help. we still have money issues but were getting ready to rent a house this summer a pretty nice home. and also were nolonger going to food banks. we now shop at walmart aldi and even sams club.

There are many jobs available, such as washing dishes, janitorial, working construction, Wal-Mart, working at McDonald's as there is no such thing as no jobs available! @annahudson76 I have been without food and know first hand what it's like. And I don't mean complaining that I'm having cereal for dinner, I mean not knowing if I'm going to have dinner period. So I know what going hungry is like. And I'm not judging, I'm stating a fact based on what I see with my own eyes. But I didn't go on welfare or food stamps, I toughed through it and did what I had to do to get back on my feet. I work hard and I live modestly.
@vtorialyn well i think a lot of people are learning how to live within theyre means. but the bad thing is if you have sick kids like i did its hard to work and get them to the doctor and to pay medical bill. some people have had such high medical bills its hard to pay. I work hard too rnd Im very lucky to have a job I work in the medical field but in the small town i live in everything has closed down and there just arnt jobs.almost everyone I know itheyre unemploument has run out.
@annahudson76 Yeah, this country is in serious need of some help that's for sure. I have no medical insurance and most the people I know have none. I see so many people that are in pain and can't afford to go to the doctor, or get the prescribed medications they need.

I am from the UK & a nurse.The NHS is not perfect but anyone who is ill can get help, you pay one price for your prescriptions & we even have NHS dentist. I could not imagine living in a country where you can not afford to fall ill. Also from some of these comments is it true that employers will not employ anyone who is out of work or as bad credit. My eyes have been open to the US, i am shocked.

Most the people I know can not afford health care and their jobs don't provide it either. It's really gotten bad. I pray for it to get better for everyone here. I haven't heard of someone not getting a job because they have bad credit, but then I'm not sure about the higher paying jobs. Maybe I should move to the UK.
@vtorialyn The UK is far from perfect, we have alot of our own problems to deal with but the NHS is still there for people. Cameron has tried to introduce private schemes but all the medical field from nurses to GP to leading consultants have stood by the NHS. I remember treating a young american who had broke his leg, he waited nearly 4 days to get treatment as he thought we did not have "real" hospital. I think he was shocked that we did not hit him over the head.

I watched a programme on the BBC which shown people lining up for days for free health service, this man had cancer & the dr told him to go to hospital but he said he had no insurance & he could not afford the bill, his wife & kids were so upset. I lived in Lakeland FL from 2004 to 2008. Moved from VA to work the Kerry/Edwards campaign. I found Lakeland was 50% of the kids going to public schools in 2008 were homeless (I'm sure it is higher now), only 30% of the kids graduated from HS and only 14% of the population had SOME college.
I TRIED to wake people up when I was there about what was coming. They weren't interested in listening. As they lose their jobs, homes and hope I wonder if they ever think of me and what I said.

The kids were washing in a department store bathroom before school. This is poverty by American standards, but still better than the extreme conditions for people in third world countries who can't even find clean water with which to wash or drink. Americans have a different point of view of what is poverty. There, a poor guy earns 24,000 a year, have a house (or at least pay rent) with heat and a car, even if it lacks gas or tax payments. In 3rd world countries, the poor is the one that makes 5k a year, lives in a slum and goes to work in subways twice as crowded and 10 times more dangerous than ny ones. you know i can realate. we were the same in my family vactions and such, when the ecomony went bad my dad got his pay cut. and my mom couldnt work due to some medical issues. we ended up loosing our home. we went to food banks to get help. we still have money issues but were getting ready to rent a house this summer a pretty nice home. and also were nolonger going to food banks. we now shop at walmart aldi and even sams club.

So I know what going hungry is like. And I'm not judging, I'm stating a fact based on what I see with my own eyes. @vtorialyn The UK is far from perfect, we have alot of our own problems to deal with but the NHS is still there for people. Cameron has tried to introduce private schemes but all the medical field from nurses to GP to leading consultants have stood by the NHS. I remember treating a young american who had broke his leg, he waited nearly 4 days to get treatment as he thought we did not have "real" hospital. I think he was shocked that we did not hit him over the head.

The rich can have all the money they want but i would rather have a loving family & peace of mind. The US have made a big impact on the world & given us many of wondeful things. I am sure that the people will still have the fire in their hearts like they did when they kicked us out, LOL

The rich are getting richer, the poor getting poorer, and wiping out the middle class all together. All I know is I'd like to have some health insurance! I lived in Lakeland FL from 2004 to 2008. Moved from VA to work the Kerry/Edwards campaign. I found Lakeland was 50% of the kids going to public schools in 2008 were homeless (I'm sure it is higher now), only 30% of the kids graduated from HS and only 14% of the population had SOME college.
I TRIED to wake people up when I was there about what was coming. They weren't interested in listening. As they lose their jobs, homes and hope I wonder if they ever think of me and what I said.

I used to get pissed because my friends all had cars and I rode a bike everywhere. But some of their parents went to jail for financial fraud, so I'm counting my fortunes.
