Having watched Bondiplus tonight it finally transpires that Piano is the least person to blame in all this controversy.
The underlying problem is that while the citizens are asking for an Opera House, the Members of Parliament (both sides?) are pushing for a brand new Parliament. So this highlights the evident conflict of interest of our parliamentarians. This is a self-served gift at the taxpayers' expense.
This was not a fair game, because in reality, the citizens never stood a chance!
Lack of space is a very laboured argument for shying away from re-building the Opera House. In fact very few of us are buying it.
If the new parliament were not at the very top of the PM's agenda, then, perhaps, there would be enough space to build the equivalent of New York's Metropolitan Opera house! Let alone!
So lack of space appears to be a lame excuse for lack of will! At any rate I would suggest not touching the ROH site at all and letting Trevisan or England complete the job.
He is a great architect and he is entitled to his technical assement of the site. But the tragic fact remains that his proposal is overwhelmingly disliked by the Maltese.
Piano did a great job at harmonizing the Theater with his inner ideals. He just dismisses the importance to harmonize it with the people who have to live with it and who are ultimately paying or it!
Of all the possible designs that Renzo Piano could come up with, it's the lack of a building that offends me most. :-(
