  • Retailed $200.00 in the U.S. in 1986

Bought on Craigslist for $5.00 in 2012

    God I Love Sega!

  • I have looked for Mortal Kombat for a while all I can find is the PAL version, did they make a NTSC version? or will PAL work in a NTSC console?

  • @RetroGam3Nerd well PAL has a different frames per second speed than NSTC so no, it wont work

  • Did you say the built in sonic master system 2 was the more rare version john? as i purchased the sonic version of eBay with 6 other games for just £17 which i thought was an excellent deal, even more now if this version is the rarer version?

  • @nutbag258 The Sonic model is indeed quite rare, usually the European Master System came with Alex Kidd built-in and for £17 you did bag yourself a bargain.

  • You forgot to mention the hidden game in the master system. It was like a maze game or something. I think you had to start it without a game installed and press a button. Not sure. that was like 23 years ago.

  • I would've loved to have a master system, but i don't remember any stores selling them. I got my NES at sears for $80 and didn't know about the master system until the mid 90s.

  • I still have the Sega Master System.

  • What do u like better model 1 or 2?

  • @jacksaints1: The first model is better. I still have it and it still works My dad bought it for me back in 1987. The reason I kept it is because it has sentimental values.

  • What does it mean when they say Nintendo had control of 96% of the market?? I know the easy answer is it means nes could make more games than the competition but WHY were they able to??

  • i love my master system and im 13

  • @HolyNoob98: I'm 32 years old, my dad bought the Sega Master System when I was like about 7 or 8 years old. Action Fighter and Space Harrier are my 2 favorite Sega Master System video games.

  • Yo la tube, tenia juegos 3D.. buenisima!!

  • Too bad that sega master system III was only in japan

  • Did the Sega Master System II also exclude the advanced sound engine chip that the original Mark III had or was it a direct successor to the Master System released in the states? Cool video, by the way... it's the first time I've ever seen that follow up version of the console.

  • i went from nintendo to sega to playstation.lol

  • i pick on up four $1 but it did not come with the ac or av but the sega master takes the sega mod1 ac,av hook ups an it works

  • @keith81081 i had one master system when i was a kid, i used to think snail maze was this big secret. god i miss those days as a trouble free kid sat in my room with my master system

  • the us sms2 looks different to the eu model

  • my first sega master system still works, played today sonic 1

  • i bought one for 6 bucks back in 99....what a degen system the pause buttons on the machine

  • Hello , i dont have an RF SWITCH for my sms 2 so if i buy an NES RF SWITCH is this work for my sms or not ? Please answer .

  • @anassgame Yes it works I have used a Nes RF switch on a SMS 2.

  • @anassgame

An RF switch from many other game consoles will work (Atari 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, NES, Genesis, Turbografx, SNES, N64, etc. will all work!)

  • ok but i dont know how to Replace that RF in SMS 2 ?

  • Ugh, that pause button. Seeing that brought back some annoying childhood memories of accidentally hitting reset instead of pause when playing in a poorly lit room. What sadistic bastard thought that it would be a good idea to have pause and reset buttons right next to each other?

Other than that, I loved the master system though. What really stood out for me as a kid was how much more colorful the graphics were over the NES.

  • Actually TurboGrafx ripped off Sega. The card games came out years before the Turbo system.

  • @TwistedSpeech

Other way around. Hudson (that designed the Turbo) was first with their Bee Cards on the MSX was years before the Sega Cards.

  • @Firebomber7 What year?

  • @TwistedSpeech

Hudson- 1983- MSX Bomberman, on Bee Card, came out in 1983.

Sega- 1984- Sega first released MyCard games in 1984 on the SG-1000 (the Mark II had a MyCard add-on)

FYI, Hudson is the company behind the Turbografx-16. NEC produced the system.

And yes, Sega was releasing add-ons for their consoles before the Master System even hit North American or European shores!!! The Sega CD, off the top of my head, was Sega's FOURTH console add-on in their history.

  • @Firebomber7 Oh I know about the add-ons. The Master System had a laser gun and 3D glasses long before Sega CD or the 32X for the Genesis. Technically though the Magnavox Odyssey had cards first back in 1972. They were numbered and basically were the same game with some slight alterations.

  • Mini tripod for any digital camera, 10 bucks. Not having to set the entire weight of a Master System onto your vintage cart, priceless.

But seriously, keep up the reviews, informative and fun.

  • @CYLLICYBIN: I had the SMS1 back in the day and the version I got, which obviously was prior to yours, didn't have the games Hang on/Safari Hunt built in, but were rather included as a cartridge in the system bundle.

  • anybody watched the regular show where the dudes played with master system? :D

  • @davidofchinkov41 Watched it and I saw it.

  • Nice review. Is this system worth getting. I found one at a local store for about 40 dollars. What if I have a Atari 7800 already. Also have all the other sega systems except for this and the GameGear.

  • Man Phantasy Star was so freaking epic back in the day. I got in on the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection and it was just as good, if not better, as RPG's today. Man... good old times...

  • The Disney games on the Master System were fantastic. Really worth your time if you ever find them. I got a MS version II a few years back along with some games and let me tell you, it is worth to own it.

  • this was the first videogame console i have ever played and it would be really awesome to get my hands on one of these someday to pay homage to my "baptism" for video games. i assume they are quite rare though

  • You seem to be speaking like there's someone sleeping and you don't want to wake them.

  • Lack of 3rd party support is the only thing that killed the Master System. It was far superior to the NES in pretty much every single aspect, but unfortunately it didn't have the 3rd party support, thus the library of games, to really be competitive.

  • looks like the system from regular show

  • @RandyRocksfull1 It is. I noticed that the first time I watched the show. I was really pleased!

  • *puts game*

    system:di-di-di-di-di-di-dig champs

  • to get that maze game, if i remember correctly when u switch the system on and the sega logo comes up, hold up on the directional pad plus both buttons at the same time and the maze should start........

  • watching this again for the thousandth time lol It seems Sega kinda took the hu card route lol

  • I loved this system, it had more processing power than the NES but it did not have the games, its too bad because this console could have gave us so much more than it ended up giving, if you took all the classic NES games and programmed them the right way on the MASTER SYSTEM those games would have looked better and some may have played better but i did not like the controllers at all, but sega came back with THE GENESIS and redeemed themselves,

  • i just love the shape, colour and the little diagram on the sms..it looks so 80's futuristic...my friend used to lend me his with psycho fox and outrun and i thought it was great..recently found a master system 2 and loads of games left outside a house that was being renovated and the guy painting outside said it was cool to take em.it got a budget re-design to help keep sales going alongside the megadrive i think. I really want a sms 1 though even if just to have on display.

  • "Now the downfall about the controls, is I don't like the controls." LOL

  • did you actually play the sms 1? one thing you failed to mention was the sms 1 had hang on and safari hunt built into them which you could play depending on which button you pressed on the sega logo screen. but there was also a maze game built in. you had to know the button combination to play it. i always forgot what to hold. so 3 games built in? you dont get that kind of service nowdays.

  • You should remade the video in higher resolution. The kids deserve to know that Master System stood for. Keep it up!

  • Well, at least it became a collector's item.

    Always love retro stuff.

  • I've always felt that the Sega Master System was little more than a slightly upgraded Colecovision. That's not to knock it in any way -- this was much of the same basic hardware that powered many arcade machines back in the day.

  • I like the master system but WHAT WERE THEY THINKING PUTTING THE PAUSE BUTTON ON THE SYSTEM!?

  • oh man! I had the sega master system 2 when I was a kid with built in sonic the hedgehog! Then my mum sold it without telling me a few years ago! Oh man i was pissed haha.... How much can you sell them for these days?

  • I bought sega 1 system just to have something different. Everyone I knew had a Nintendo and we mostly played sports games. The master system had a really good baseball but the Walter Payton football was a huge disappointment. There were a few other games I liked but by the time I bought it they didn't make many more games for it and it went into the dust binds of history for me.

  • I never owned one of these, but my friend owned the original version and we use to stay up all night playing Zillion! SMS was a great system and very under rated!

  • @ittelgimaf i had one, i couldnt wait to get my speccy back!

  • @ittelgimaf Same here. I used to play Wonder Boy in Monster Land at my buddy's for hours. I never had a Sega system myself other than a used Dreamcast.

  • @phobos2k2 i borrowed dragons trap from my cousin and he never saw it again lol

  • Great video.I still have the model 1 SMS and i usually play with this more than the PS2 and the Dreamcast. One thing that you forgot is that when it first came out,it had a built in game that was actually a maze game.Man what did you remind me.When i brought it from Canada to Greece in 1988,no one ever heard about it untill it came in 1990 and a year later came the Mega Drive.

  • Dude I never played a real master system in those days myself and friends had NES. I agree the games on the master system were cooler than Nintendo but when NES had a Saturday morning cartoon and breakfast cereal that tasted like crap sega didn't stand a chance. Glad to be a kid of that generation enjoyed the video thanks bro!

  • didnt sell that much mainly cause of the price compared to a brand new NES for 80 bux with 2 controllers a zapper a rob robot and mario/duck hunt

  • Comment removed

  • @coolhandremy fag

  • I love the master system controller.. ....it was not "unresponsive" at all in my opinion...the fatal flaw WAS the lack of the pause button on the controller it's self however.

  • @MMZen No biggie... well, that's the problem with the 1st model - the pause and reset buttons are exactly the same size, shape and colour! I drew a diagram/pictogram on a sticky label, numbered it to help me remember which button was which and then stuck it onto the console :) Hope that helps.

  • in Brazil, Master system I and II are basically the same, even the design, the one you showed in this video as Master System 2, in Brazil it is actually the Master System 3... Weird. hahaha

  • Holy ffffuuuuuuuuuu shit! A sega master system. I respectfully bow to you...

  • Are you holding a flathead screwdriver at 0:49 - 0:51

  • Thanks for the enjoyable video(s). I only had a Master System briefly man years ago, and have never really thought of getting one till now for my collection.

  • Master 1 much better.

  • Europe is full with the Master System and the US is full with the NES ...

that's not cool ... I want many games for both systems ...^^ (without paying 10 euros each ...)

  • This I explains a lot because I live in the U.S and don't recall EVER seeing a Sega Master System Commercial.

  • I recently reviewed the model 2. I'd kill for a model 1 though ¬_¬

  • You sound like you had a bad day

  • @pat20105 I agree, it just sounds like his heart's not really in it. It's pretty thorough review as far as technical specs and historical notes are concerned, but just kinda like well i'll pump this out before going to bed, get it done with.

  • Can you speak a bit louder next time? I can hardly hear you and the lack of excitement in your voice makes this video seem very boring, even though I searched for Sega Master System to hear all about it, you are making me regret it.

  • shoulda talked about the power base converter for the Genesis as well. :)The power base converter could do the 3D glasses as well if I'm not mistaken.

  • The SMS processor is actually the processor in the earlier model 1 Genesis/Mega Drive consoles, it's how the power base converter worked, it rerouted the game to run off the sound chip. Smart thinking.

  • Did you mean the SMS with Sonic built in was a little harder to find?

I have this one boxed with instructions, and in pretty excelltent condition i put it on ebay a while back but it didnt get any attention really, except some weird people wanting serial numbers and asking about buying the box and instructions.

  • Let's play some happy, little games... Way to go, Bob!... I mean Gamster81.

  • Nice review! My fav system! I got this in '86 (I was 12) and loved it until I replaced it with a bass guitar in '90. As for it being rare: I was one out of 2 kids who owned this in middle school out of a class of over 500 with almost each of them owning an NES. As for the controllers, I never had any issues except for playing Space Harrier. I used an Atari 2600 joystick instead and it worked! Thanks!

  • @KEWLSTEWIEGUY Master system model I is taller And the master system model II Is smaller.

  • are you herb mellnick from two and a half men?

  • Definitely Model 1 is the way to go I think, for the added features sure but Model 2 looks like a cheap knockoff.

  • sonic wasnt for the regular sega, sonic came out with the sega genesis

  • @JOKAWILD26 Right, but they went back and made Sonic for the Master System also.

  • is till got mine, and all the games, it works like a charge unlike my NES that is till ahve. I love that it also had altered beast and jungle hunt on MAster System 1

  • beef and cheese baby, beef and cheese

  • Fuck I miss mine

  • I love the MasterSystem. You're right John, it's totally underrated. I always thought it looked like a really high-tech Atari system : )

  • ....i want one...

  • DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN! that thing is old! i remember having sega ms but just barely 8D sooo ooold but so cooool!

  • @Megaprimetron i bought a sega genesis model 1 from goodwill as well. for $10 it came with a controller and no cords but luckily i had them. it was in a storage building for years and was covered in dirt..i cleaned it up and it works! try cleaning the games with windex or rubbing alcohol..thats how i got mine to work!

let me know if it works! :)

  • @DURAMATRIX112 well I found out that the power adapter that I tried it with (the three in one NES, SNES and Genesis M1) dosn't work with genesises or Genesi's or whatever the plural is. I returned the boxed genesis to goodwill and got an unboxed HD model one with boxed copies with manuals of sonic 1and2 for$45. I regret returning it. If it has been awhile since I replied to your reply it is because I hardly check my email. I got a new, non transformer channel. It is called Davisguy64

  • @DavisGuy64 oh i see. i use that 3 in 1 adapter as well. wow my sonic 1 is just the box with game.

oh its alright for the late response :)

  • I love SMS... I still have more fun with these games then any PS or Xbox games.

Games back then had more adventure, some SMS games are still hard as hell to finish but you can't help to keep going back for more... Games had more style then, it was not about big graphics, blood and gore, or about sex.... SMS are games that everyone can enjoy... One game super, super hard is Shinobi it's a game that has you on edge until then end... SMS still the best :-D

  • my god mother got me this for my birthday instead of a nintendo... I remember thinking i had to buy my first game . I found out safari hunt and hang on was built in from some one from my elementary school at the time . lol .... I agree very under rated....

  • yap this master system did i think here ah what a miss good times a had beside this videogame it was so good oh gee :-(

  • I love my SMS, I have had it since I was a kid, and I actually own a working phaser gun and 3-D goggles. They give you quite a headache after wearing them for a while and are a pain to keep on your nose, but it's nice at the fact that the game can be played in both 2-D & 3-D. Also, whoever mentioned it, Safari Hunt wasn't the only game that used the gun, I have the system at my parents atm so I can't look, but I did have a different game that used the gun.

  • @xxMerlyxx missle defense 3d and gangster town were phaser games also

    .

  • @xxMerlyxx Rambo 3 uses the gun, and it rules. Also Marksman/trap shooting, Rescue mission (or whatever it's called) and Gangster Town use the gun.

  • SMS was fun.

  • i still have my SMS from when i was a kid.

its the model 2 with alex kidd built in

  • hey i just bought a boxed master system 1 with light gun, arcade stick, controller, and five games for £29.99 thats about $46.00 was it a good deal?

  • I just got a Sega Master System 1 at the Salvation Army after years of looking for one. I got it along with a Genesis Model 1 and an 8 track case filled with 35 Atari 2600 games for 25 dollars. It was one of my better finds in quite some time, and I absolutely love my Master System.

  • I have a Master System III wich was only released in Brazil. I will announce on ebay. Its the same model as II but with sonic pre installed.

  • That original Master System also has a built-in game - "Snail Maze" (not sure of the title).

It can accessed by pressing the d-pad in various directions while simultaneously pressing button I and then button II during the boot-up "SEGA Logo" screen when no cartridges were inserted.

Other than the poor placement of the pause button, I found the Master System to be superior to the Famicom/NES in every way possible.

  • model 1 was built in with hang on a 'motorcycle game' and safari hunt witch was a light phaser gun game it was way better then duck hunt for nes there was even a built in extra easter egg game that you had to hold left and B @ the sega logo it was a maze game

  • The SMS had a peculiar period of popularity here in the UK. Generally, our interest in consoles only took off at the time of the 16-bits. Before that, us UK 80's kids were more into computer systems such as the C64, mainly due to the very low cost of software.

The SMS1 was advertised heavily but, despite it's cool image, sales never really took off. But the launch of the MegaDrive created a brief but huge surge in uptake of the SMS2. It was seen as an affordable way to enter into the Sega arena.

  • @jamak42 As far as I know, the Snail Maze game was an easter egg game built in to all SMS versions. You hold down the two controller buttons and press UP, as I recall.

  • Got a Master System II with Sonic 1 built-in. Came with a controller, and 4 more games all for £5. Good deal methinks.

  • so is the sms and smsII like different in any ways apart from its looks and features. I mean has the smsII got more enhanced graphics and hardware, or is it like the ps1 and ps1 slim? the same console but just different casing?

  • do u have the sega saturn

  • I had my master system in the lat 80s / early 90s, that was the time for the MS. Never had a NES. After SMS I got Mega Drive, then Super Nintendo. 8bit/16bit rules!

  • I got a SMS 2 for free but it came with no cords or games but since theres a built in game ill just try a bunch or RF and AC adapters from other consoles since my turbo grafix 16 is using a Nintendo RF and a Sega Genesis AC adapter so somethings bound to work. Ive always wanted a SMS i would of preferred a model 1 but a model 2 is just fine.

  • I need to get another SEGA Master System, the controller ports in mine are burned out and don't work at all.

  • I got my SMS for 2$ at a thrift store, also 14 games at .50$ each including Phantasy Star : ) It did not include any controllers so i tested it out with the genesis controller. Many games worked perfectly but a few did not. Wonder Boy in Monster Land is one example that needs the SMS controller, the buttons would work but you cant move with the genesis's D-Pad. I can't believe people waste so much money on ebay or playntrade when they can find gems like this at a thrift store for 90% less money

  • You got a great deal.

I go to thrift stores quite often but they hardly get any video game systems or video games in.

My local thrift store had a SNES in a few days ago.

  • Do you have the Sega-Gemini it was Atari clone and played all the games it was also called the coleco-gemini.

  • I bought SMS 1 + 2 games + lightgun & controller for 10£ + 7£ shipping :)

  • sweet review tehre buddy, nice to see some love for the master system, just one thing, and dont get it wrong, but I cant hear shit, you speak like too low, it's kinda quiet, but still, it's nice to see someone puts some research on it's reviews, so, good work, kudos for that =P

  • I chose the SMS over NES. I loved it, but after a while I got jealous of my friends having NES. So I later bought an NES as well.

  • I really want one of these, but the system is always between $50-$70 and I can never afford one. I got a saturn for $35 back in 07, and now the place I got it from wants $70 for them, this is rediculous, Sega systems cost way too much now.

  • i never knew the commodore 64 av cable was the same as sms

  • i remember the maze game you can play when the system had no game in it

  • I've got the one with Sonic the Hedgehog built in to it lol. That was my first games console.

  • I had both Master Systems (3 is sold in South America I think only) - this is the first time I see that small card size game though... I always wondered what they looked like since I had only regular cartridges for it. Also, I had a light gun for it and Gangster Town for it!

  • there was a floppy disk expansion system that coonects to the bottom of the master system. google it sega master system floppy disk system

  • just like to make a couple commnets and a question or 3 my sms actually came with 2 built in games hang on and some shooting game safari hunt i beleive? anyways is this a normal thing? and also ive noticed sms2 is a rare find in the us (at least on ebay) could i buy one from another country or would i run in to issues using ntsc japan or pal?

  • @92greenz34 I don't know how rare is that version with those 2 games but yeah I've heard about that one, If you buy your SMS2 from Europe, Brazil, Australia and almos any other country except Mexico Yeah, you're going to have problems, first you will have to get an AC Adaptor which matches US MAINS of 110~125 then you will have to get a converter for the video since European And Brazilian models are PAL.

  • @Ryoga2K thanks a lot really appreciate it

  • An upgrade version of an regular Nintendo.

  • I just bought a sega master system 2 with the in built sonic game for £2.00 GBP..It has the original boxing and packaging and is in very good condition.Did i get a bargain?.

  • @Naomi0111 Yeah great deal.

  • @Gamester81 Damn $200 in 1986 was a hell of alotta money !

  • @Naomi0111 They cost like, $60 online.

  • @Naomi0111 nah sounds pretty high bro

  • @Naomi0111 NICE GLOATING! :D

  • @Naomi0111 bargain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Does the Led turn on without a cartdridge?

  • @gkyy3c if you're talking about the let on the SMS1 yes it turns on and actually plays a game that is in the internal memory of the system.

  • @HELLSEEKER33AD

No it really wasn't, the hardware was a lot better than the NES, but the games were terrible.

  • this wasn't a great system, the master system was crap

  • you should review the genesis add on that played master system games. If you already demoed it i apologize

  • I love how in this video you talk as if there is somebody asleep next to you :o)

  • @RetroGamerVX Actually my wife was asleep in the other room next store. lol

  • @Gamester81 Aha, that would explain it, your very curtious towards her there :o)

  • @Gamester81 I think I heard her @ 3:09

  • your voice is like, pure bass.

  • The model 1 had different games built into it too. Mine has Hang On, and a snail maze game. There was a light gun package where the console had both Hang On and Duck Hunt built in.

One neat feature of the model 1 is that it will play PAL games as well as NTSC. It also has no regional lock-out, so you can play all of those games that came out in Europe and Brazil. It has trouble with some of the PAL 3-D games though.

    STAY AWESOME! :)

  • @xxbox6191 My model 1 has Hang On built into it, as well as a snail maze game (which is the one I think you are refrencing).

    STAY AWESOME! :)

  • I still have my Sega Master System 2 ( with sonic not alex the kid ). My 1st ever console that my parents got me.

  • @ShypkusPIes Yup I have one at home. It's a big Cartridge slot that fits into the Game Gear. Although when you insert the Cartridge slot plus the master system game it makes the Game Gear twice as heavy!

  • did u have a cold recording this.

had to blast my volume to here you.

Sorry My bad for being a dick

    hate mumbling though

  • You sound like Bob Ross dude!

    (and that's a positve thing)

I'm bidding on an e-bay like site in Holland, it's up to 17,50 (SMS 2), thats like 25 dollars i guess, do you think that price is fair?

    Regards

  • LOL Bob Ross huh? Anyways $25 is a good price for a SMS for sure. Good luck winning it.

  • Damn ! The SMS was already sold (u huh) Anyway, it wasn't even boxed, and very dusty (why the hell would you put photo's of that on a site anyway?)

I will look further for more consoles, today I got my Megadrive (boxed and in great shape), it even got some games. I'm planning to get a big collection.

  • @Gamester81 just to make sure, can't you play sms games on the sms2 and viceversa?

  • have the exact same master system

  • hello, my master system 1 is diferent, have only a big master system name without the sega, and my master system 3 is just like your master system 2... lol, thats funny

  • yes, here in Brazil was a sucess!! the company who sale master system here is Tec Toy

  • Thanks for showing. I want to get a replacement SMS cuzza the bad av port on the back of mine and the model 2 intrigued me but now I think I'll skip it. That's an insult that it won't play my card games or use 3d glassed

  • i bought one of these at a yard sale for 20 dollars with the 3d glasses, light gun, and 7 games in their boxes, i was so stupid because i sold it back for 20 dollars and bought a genisis with 30 games in their boxes, now im thinking of getting a power base converter.

  • Nice video!

I got a litle question: Do you know what power supply the master system 2 uses? You see, I just bought it without the AC adapter.

  • I have 1 MasterSystem and 2 of the Second model :)

Such awesome systems , but didn't have many big companies making games for them , but that's where homebrew comes in :D
