  • i use to much time drowing ,finding proportions than just use paper to copy it .i feel it is more art without a printer. but nice video anyway,

  • looks like my rat terrier Chico! lol

  • I love this! I am in the middle right now. I have two coats, my background, and the first coat of the shape of my dog. This is my very first painting, like, ever. But my boyfriend thinks that I am artistic, so he bought me all the supplies I need for my birthday, so for his birthday (this Sunday) I am painting a picture of his dog, but she is a Mastiff, so very different from the dogs you painted. I am taking pics as I go... Fingers crossed.... :-)

  • tried it milion times, but it just won't trace !!! :(

  • @nataliawasilewska97 make sure your using the right "graphite" pencil

  • @nataliawasilewska97 when you fill in the back with the graphite go beyond the outline of your dog. That worked for me

  • i love how people think shes tracing because she's just better than them at painting.

  • Tracing = cheating

  • Greetings!

Love this, I have wanted to do my cat. tracing is something that has always helped me in learning more about drawing shapes. I hope you will show us more.

I think you can do whatever it takes to learn. I sometimes use coloring book line art to practice.

  • Dear Laura, Thank you so much for a wonderful tutorial for beginners! I am not an artist, but tutorials such as yours give me an opportunity to express myself (yes, even using tracing methods allow you to express yourself. There are many styles of folk art that use this or a similar method. You still have to work with colour, strokes, high-lighting, etc.). Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Like you said "get painting"! :-)

  • I followed your steps and I managed to do it! I can't draw or paint so noone believes me. I don't know how to post the picture so I can't show you it. :( Your videos are so easy to follow and are fun to watch, I love them :D

  • Kiko found this very interesting!!! LOL I'm gonna try this. Idea. Thnx for posting the tutorial. I'm gonna try both. My black and tan will be the detailed and my beagle the block coloring.

  • how is outlining art... i swear if picasso or michelangelo was alive... they would disaprove of this... about 5% of artist are true... the rest just copy.. hell... might as welll fake it till you make it.

  • Tracing in my opinion is not such a bad thing, Okay there are those who have the skills to create works without tracing but unfortunatly not all people are blessed with such skill. By using tracing, the world of painting is opened up to all those who would otherwise pass this beautiful hobby by for fear of not making a decent job.

Some professional artists even project images to get the proportions correct.

  • Hey Emily. Could you send me this picture of Splash ? Because I can't find any good pictures of a Bc.

    my email is nataliawasilewska97@hotmail.co.uk

  • yup, that's cool ! gonna try the both methods

  • Honestly it appears as if my opinion has been spamming the shit out of your video... I wish I had realized sooner. My opinion stands for the older audience, but I don't care if the children trace... have fun with your videos, I'm sorry about this. I honestly never thought it would turn into a heated argument, SO I will stop replying/posting on this video now... sorry again : / really I am =A=

  • please avoid covering a large amount of areas while mixing. you're swishing the paint round and round.

  • i wish i can do that i dont have that stuff

  • @DrawWithLaura i want to tell you if you do not already know that not all artists are the same.....ya you are a great artist but so is emily (kikopup) everyone has their own way of doing things and i actually agree with emily cuz there is NO RULES FOR ART!!!!! and if there was......who are you to decide???

  • I hope you make more videos like this! I'm going to try your technique. I really hope you post more!

  • WOULD OIL PAINT WORK TOO?

    OH...BY THE WAY...LOVE!!!YOUR WORK!!!!!!!

  • @DrawWithLaura If it wasnt clear, this video was for people who have no technical skills, as well as children. I would not scold a child for using a coloring book. You can work on one skill at a time- just like in dog training- you can focus on color mixing with the lower criteria of not having to focus on form- by learning in steps you can build strong behaviors. I also don't like being told what to do as an artist, and I believe in "no rules", the best kind of art is "dishonorable" art

  • @kikopup this video is my "bricks in the Tate" video. I went to the finest art school out there... the Slade School in London, and what I learned to do was rebel from what are the supposed 'rules'. When people start making rules for art, that is when you have to start worrying. I hope that all young budding artists out there learn, that really "there are no rules" I paint portraits without 'tracing" but I also create 80% of the art I do by just fooling around

  • @kikopup so true! your pups are so adorable also!

    1

  • @kikopup Like I said, I completely understand if they're (children) or they have no artistic talent and are never planning on becoming artists.

But your previously made paintings like this appear to of been traced as well, and as we can all see.... your not a child and are old enough to not trace. The fact that your an "artist" and your tracing is... a bad example for anyone who likes your work. And saying "The best kind of art is dishonorable art" you will have to enlighten me on that one...

  • @kikopup

He didn't tell you to do anything.

  • @DrawWithLaura I don't trace (Only a few times, and I fail at tracing), but that's because I am a crappy tracer (I'm not kidding) and I prefer to try to get something accurate as I can, but nothing wrong with it as long as you're not lying. Also, with painting commissions, some artists do trace and clients wouldn't have a problem. It saves time. There is also no such thing as "You're old enough not to trace."

  • @artistcjalos Well you were saying for children and such, so what I was saying was that your not a child, so theres no excuse to trace.

HOWEVER- you make a valid point in what you just said. I agree that as long as its a known fact that you trace (and it's not of other peoples artwork) then it's fine.

But the "commissioners tracing" thing... Honestly I wouldn't want to pay to have somebody trace my pet, I would want the skill, and knowledge of them being able to do it without tracing.

  • @DrawWithLaura - Dear 'Miss' Laura... Not everyone aspires to be a 'technician' like yourself. We have but one life to live. There is NOTHING 'dishonorable' about one enjoying the fruits of life be it music, cooking, writing, singing, photography, woodworking, sewing, or sitting in a chair watching Jerry Springer talking on the phone in your underwear eating cheetos with your thumb stuck up your ass. Who really give's a FF if the one who indulges is enjoying it?

Prudish comment if you ask me.

  • @tazztt1 The ONLY thing that upset me is that this video is teaching people to trace.

Being an artist an actual ARTIST. Doesn't involve tracing... at least it SHOULDN'T.

  • @DrawWithLaura ... hahaha... if you were an 'ACTUAL' artist, then you would know that artist is not definitive. If I wear holey bibs, chew tobacco and play the banjo... I'm STILL an artist.

  • @tazztt1 Excuse me if you will... but you keep straying off topic, I never said you couldn't chew tobacco, as if that has ANYTHING to do with art.

I'm SAYING tracing. Is TRACING. There is no skill in that, and yes for children it's fine blabla, but the older audience is going to take on that tracing is okay, some will even not ADMIT to tracing and thus be stealing art from other people with no remorse for it, BECAUSE people such as yourself make it okay. I don't see how you don't get this.

  • @tazztt1 Try using your pets picture as a REFERENCE, or something like that don't just bluntly trace the entire thing and fill it in, teach the people that watch this video that art can be easy with the right temperament, give them the necicery stepping stones to further themselves in art, once they reference their pet and show it to their family they will be praised which will encourage them to continue the method you teach wether it be referencing-or tracing... and tracing is a nasty habit...

  • @DrawWithLaura ... well, I suppose evryone is entitled to their opinion... even a snob like you

  • @tazztt1 Honestly I haven't been calling names or anything like that, I've been trying to provide a point, I've backed up my opinion, and all you've been doing is going off topic and now being plain rude, I am fulling willing to change my opinion and see the other side but apparently your stuck on your opinion and thats-that. Which is just fine, I would just like the conversation to be a little more civilized : /

  • @DrawWithLaura ... DrawWithLaura says> "I don't trace (Only a few times, and I fail at tracing), but that's because I am a crappy tracer"... THEN says> "Far as I'm concerned tracing the image shows no technical skill"... so we must assume now that Ms. Laura "Has no technical skill"

The 'uncivilized' and 'rude' conversation began when YOU slammed the poster with your infinite wisdom.

Your 'opinion' is welcome. Insistance of what a person should or shouldn't do is not, just sayin'.

  • @tazztt1 Yes if you take a small chunk out of context it can make a person sound like an asshole. Teaching to trace rather teaching to use the skills you will need to further yourself in art are two different things, I was merely saying it's better to teach a person to fish then give them a few.

  • @DrawWithLaura ... not everyone here wants to be an aspiring artist... some of us just want to have some fun! if they wanna trace, they can trace... there's NO shame in that... go on and paint your way... those that want to trace will trace...

    nothing's changed

  • @DrawWithLaura Lol i see what your saying its almost like cheating on a test. I never traced and never will. I still see it as a fun activity for those that just don't have the skill or patience to do it free hand.

  • @DrawWithLaura I agree, I really only understand when the artist is only just beginning their art life. Its always best to copy a good style then morph it to their own style and personality. But if creating a tutorial, I would suggest not actually tracing, maybe try showing people an easy to way draw said animal and color them with flat colors so no real detail is needed. But if someone is seriously bad at art then I guess this should be fine.

  • @DrawWithLaura with all the respect, that is not true at all. who are you that you think you can judge what an artist should or shouldnt do? anyone can use any technic he/she wants if it's inspiring to him/her and making him/her happy

  • @DrawWithLaura After reading your comment, I checked out your channel and see that you do your art with a COMPUTER. Hypocrite I say! HYPOCRITE!

  • @low72 First of all, late reply is late.

Second of all-how is using a computer make me a hypocrite?

  • THANKS :D

  • lol this was aMAzinggg

  • I couldn't follow the graphite stuff. I understand the tracing the outline of the photo but don't know how you ended up with it, without using tracing paper. Generally I find you are talking too fast and going too fast for me. The outline part is crucial since Im a terrible drawer, and even after watching it twice I don't get the steps.

  • ooh i need buy some pencils T-T

  • its almost 3 in the morning but I am sooooo tempted to go to walmart and get supplies LOL I am so going to try this :)

  • I was wondering why you covered it in purple then made the background?

  • Thanx that was kewl and it helped me a lot because I'm a beginning artist ! : )

  • does it work with people?

  • This is so cool! I think I may paint a portrait of our family dog for my parents as a christmas.

  • I Cant Wait To Draw My Dog Duke!!

  • This is really really great! I loved trying this. It didn't turn out perfect but I love it anyways haha I had to use watercolor though because I don't have any acrylics. And you should DEFINITELY post more of this! I loved watching it.

  • awesome tutorial, but with my dog, Spartacus, its hard to trace the outline of him because he is so fuzzy :P I'm going to try again to paint him, but do you have any advice for helping it to be easier to trace/ paint?

    ~Sparky and Hannah :3

  • When I have room to get into acrylic painting, I'm going to try this. I subscribed because I like the way you do the portraits, and will check out other videos.

  • I love your dog behaviour and training videos, but please stick to this and forget the terrible painting classes. Your dog training abilities are your special gift.

  • that is amazing and seems really easy

  • Looks like I'm going to be home recovering from surgery. I am going to get all the supplies together and give this a shot. Thanks for posting.

  • Do you know where I can get all those paints? I can't find any art stores nearby...

What colors would I use to paint an all black dog? want to use different shades.

  • That was a great tutorial, I'm a fan of reptiles as well as dogs and this technique would work great for painting reptile portraits. I really enjoyed this a lot, thanks for making this video.

  • SMART

    but what for?

I prefer to draw witout any other accesorisies, only with my hands free

  • Here's a pic of Aaerro, my Service Dog :) She's the main watercolor pic I have up.---> vampiric-conure(dot)deviantart(dot)com (just replace the 'dots' with the real thing)

  • Here's a pic of Aaerro, my Service Dog :) She's the main watercolor pic I have up.---> vampiric-conure(dot)deviantart(dot)com (just replace the 'dots' with the real thing)

  • very anoying

  • This is a good video for beginner painters, My art teacher taught me this way when I first started painting. Sadly never really got into it, I do like watching your clips though.

  • Im sorry your awesome and this is an awesome idea but ur voice is so annoying after 5 mins

  • THIS IS AN AWESOME IDEA! Thank you soo much!! I will try it..

  • awsome paintings umm is splash a border collie?

  • yeath that transfer method is a great idea......I'll do that..take a look on facebook at some of my work...look for the art of muzz.....nice work

  • How cool....! Thanks for posting this. When I get a block of time I may try this with a picture of the minis! So how about doing a video on water colors :-)

  • thank you so much for generously sharing your knowledge. Will try this and post a pic

  • >u< Splash Is so cute! Exacly the kind of dog I want x3

  • I would love to make my own pet portrait. My problem is choosing who to paint first!

  • I havent tried it yet but your explanatios is very clear, thanks

  • This is sooo damn smart! cant believe i've been learnign to draw the hard way!!!!

  • I will definitely be doing this! I've only made portraits with dry medias, I've found paints to be pretty intimidating. This looks very easy to do!

  • this is sooo cool im soooo going to try this

  • 'Kiko found this very exciting' Lol

Great video I'm defiantly gonna try this!

  • can i send you a photo of my dog and could do that :P ! i'll pay you

  • mediocrity.... plagiarist....

  • What a great simple tutorial. I've been painting pets and got some great ideas. Thanks so much. will look for other videos

    bev

  • i will nevr be able to do that lol

  • I have no video, but I will most certainly try this one day. I should have in my art class, but that class just ended and I only recently watched this. :P My scanner is also not big enough to get them on deviant art. But any dog art videos are nice!

  • have you got some pictures of slash in the internet couse i want to try painting it but i can't find a good photo. please tell me

  • This is pretty neat. I may try it. Actually, I would like to, it's just a matter of the supplies and having the health to do so. Thank you very much for the tutorial you post. I do enjoy them. Ann

  • is bersianer ( or however u spell it) is it just normal brown?? Couse i had birthday yesterday and i got canvas and a set of acrylic paint and i would like to paint a border collie portrait.

  • Great video! I painted a portrait of my friend's dog and I'm giving that to her and her hubby for x-mas. I know they'll love it.

  • 4:59

"Kiko found this very exciting", hehe. :)

  • I like this method!Thank you!

  • i like your method i just found t the way i did mine are simalar

  • Wow! That was alot of fun and very easy! (see my video response)

I love your step by step approach. You might make an artist of me yet! LOL!

  • at 4:14 its looks like a cartoon!

  • you're so good at teaching everything

    thankyou for sharing

i'll get didge to help me out with some painting

  • great idea! I like to paint and have tried techniques like this before but these are great ideas.. i'll be painting my parents a picture of our little cavalier king charles for christmas! thanks

  • Amazing! God I wish I had found your channel when I was still in my high school art class! Would have really helped with the painting! I am so going to try this!

  • do you mean "pen" as in just a normal ball point pen.. or did you mean pen as in micron pen and sharpie pen?

  • Ball point, you want something hard to push the graphite onto the canvas to make the lines.

  • Thank you! I'll try it with my pet!

  • you are really good at showing others how to this easily, even tho I find myself good at drawing and painting, I find it hard to paint animals , and I am for certain gonna try this as soon as I get a printer .

    Thanks for posting this video!

  • i have 2 dogs and i did this it's AMAZING!

  • wow your are an artist and a trainer

  • Absolutely AWESOME!! I love how Splash's painting turned out. Now I have to try this with Jesse =o) Excellent tutorial 5* ~Heather and Jesse~

  • Remarkable. I think you make this look very easy, but I am pretty sure it is not....at least for me. I certainly enjoyed watching it.

  • "Kiko found this very exciting"

    XDD

  • this is neat i think i am going to have to go out and try this. if this works well with my pets maybe i can do one of my kids. thanks

  • Loved this video! i'm going out to by some acrylic paint now! ;)

  • Loved the technique; how in the world do you paint a dog that is totally black?

  • this is amazing

  • I could've sworn my eyes were glued to the computer while the video was playing. x3

I am gonna try it. XD

  • Wow! You paint to Wonderful! I love Splashes Painting, I should definitely give this a try! :D

    Love your Creations! :D

  • I'm definitely going to give this a try... After my end of year exams. Something to look forward to! I was never very good at painting (ceramic artist and photographer instead!), but who cares! It's all about having fun, right?!

  • That was awesome! i'm a photographer... i dont DOO drawing/painting...BUT i was 100% inspired to try. I spent the last 3 days making paintings that i have come to love... they are not quality in terms of skill...but they are totally awesome anyhow! thanks for the video!!!!!!!

  • What a great video! You really inspired me.

As soon as I watched it and read the comments, I decided to try it. I don't have any paint or brushes or canvas, so I used the colored pencils that I do have. I haven't done much in the past with them other than coloring in a few images I stamped. But I LOVE the way it turned out! I posted my short video as a reply. It's just a short video from the photos I took.. Thank-you!

  • Hola !!! Emily!!!

Muy interesante, y lo haces tan bien que se ve muy facil!!!

Se que mucha gente se va a Motivar con tu talento para Intentarlo

    Felicidades!!!

  • Emily, this was fantastic!

I too am an artist, mostly doing ink, pencil and charcoal drawings, but this year I have also started working with paint and watercolor, so thank you very much for this video, it will come in handy for me! :) Beautiful paintings, I love the styles! Keep up the amazing work my friend!

    Lizzy & Sparky

    xxxx

  • That was pretty cool. I will have to try it!

    Thanks!

  • Kikopup, this is such a COOL video idea, I love it! I will definitely try this! I draw/sometimes paint for fun so this is going to be exciting. Very awesome tips and I found the bit where Kiko was snoozing during Splash's painting very funny, heheh. It's very nice of you to share both dog training and art tutorials alike! Thanks for devoting your time so much! -Zander and Brittany

  • I love this idea, and also reading all the comments and ideas from others. I think my grandson would love to try this, too! Please do make more videos like this, showing us how to bring art and our pets together, whether on this channel or another. Just let us know where to find you! azmauigirl

  • thanx for sharing...thats a really good idea...

  • i looove this video! i always wanted to paint my dog but i didn´t know how. now i do...

  • Carino is so cute! What breed of dog is Carino?

  • thanks! I will!

  • @Carinoschatziii I wanted to paint mne to every one in my family says paint me a dog so now i no how

  • Nice job! I really like this tutorial...

One question, why purple? Does it matter?

  • Also... H6? Not 6B?

  • 6H is really light because the lead is hard 5B to 9B are really soft so are good for making a transfer. They sell graphite powder in a jar that would be possible to use for a transfer, but I can tell you, its not worth the mess, that stuff gets EVERYWHERE!!! Art stores sell transfer paper, but that doesnt work as good at this method. Also the finer the paper you print on the better the tracing will be.

  • That's what I figured... I was just confused because at 1:52 you say H6 .

  • whoops! I did a lot of mistakes when recording the voice over, thought i had found them all. THanks, I added an annotation. Gee, I could have totally set someone up to fail with the stencil!

  • Your painting is amazing by the way!

  • :) I soooo wanted to go into color theory but the video would be too long. Purple is the complimentary color of the background which is Yellowish. A lot of masters will use comp. colors that show through, like Gauguin, Van Gogh. If you look up close at a pointillism painting you'll see the mixing of comp. colors.

  • Hey Emily! Thanks for this, I have always been envious of people that can draw or paint because I feel like they always have something to do. Well, now I do!!! When money isn't so tight I am going to give this a try. :)

  • I'm still working on my painting, I already had the idea and then your video set me to work.

I'm doing it a bit different, and without the photo but I'll try to post a video response when I'm done.

When my dog Sam found out you can't eat paint, he wasn't that intrested in painting anymore...

  • Very cool! Thanks for the tutorial. I doubt I'll have time to try it right now, but will favorite this video and hopefully get to give it a try this winter.

    Tammy

  • great tutorial. the only thing is canvas and acrylics are a little expensive and people may hesitate to spend so much on something they're not too sure they can manage.

  • Thats true, you could do this same method with paper and crayons, or recycled materials. You could get as creative as you want.

  • so cute! but istn tracing it sorta cheating? XD sorry but my friend constantly bugs me about that XD i love your dogs though especially splash!

  • Nope! I don't trace the portraits I do because I have a good eye, some people want to have a portrait that looks like the photo but dont want to spend years in art school to learn how to do it- can trace it. A lot of professional artists will actually use a projector to trace an image onto the canvas anyway. The only problem with this technique is you can loose the 'individuality' of your line and it can stop you from experimenting with shape... however that might be in a dif video!

  • these are beautiful, i use to do this stuff as a kid...totally forgot about it!

  • thanks!

  • amazing!! :D

  • Excellent!

  • whoa genius!

I still don't get why you don't smile more often :P

  • haha. because that is my personality. I don't like faking a smile just for the audience!

  • Yeah I guessed as much :(

    You still rock anyway.

  • Thanks for this greatful tutorial

  • Thank you so much for the wonderful video! I love drawing, but I usually just draw in a cartoony style. I've always had trouble with traditional media, especially painting because I didn't know how to start off. But this video was the inspiration that I needed to get out all of my paints again. :)) Would you be able to post videos of different techniques and medias? I've seen your pet portrait website and it is amazing. Do you ever work with chalk or charcoal? Cheers~ :)) Hayley & Indi

  • I might start posting artsy stuff on another channel, so as not to offend 'dog training' subscribers. I dont use chalk and charcoal much, but they are awesome for drawing from a real dog because you can get the lines down so quick (before the dog moves!) My mom is the expert in Chalk though...

  • You've got talent, thx for this.

    I'm doing this! x

  • Awesome!

  • wow! this is so cool! im gonna try it. thanks for sharing!

  • Emily, this video is so cool! I am no good at drawing but I'm going to try this out as I love doing crafts and the method you used makes me think that I have a chance of being able to do this! you made me laugh with the Kiko being excited thing too!

  • Haha, yes Kiko is on her heating pad, thats where she spends about 22 hours of the day sleeping.

  • i cant get canvas' so could i do it on paper? but not do the background?

  • If you use paper, you want to use pretty thick paper with not to much water in the paint or the paper will buckle. You could also use cardboard, or whatever you have around, a wood panel. Whatever! Be creative!

  • This was great!!! I really want to try this sometime!!

  • You make it looks so easy. Nice video!!! 5*s

I love how excited Kiko was! hehe!

  • great vid! 5/5 for sure! i'll give this a shot with my boy and send you a pic of it for sure! but other ideas would be great too! ^_^

  • that is awesome =D

    your very talented

i'm going to try this =)

  • I'm gonna try to paint Kai, though my area of expertise is in drawing. May I post a video of me drawing Kai instead of painting?

    ~~*Harper & Kai*~~

  • Yes! That would be awesome!

  • aww.. that's really cute :)

  • oooh thats so cool

  • fantastically articulated Em, I love the idea of anyone and everyone making a painting of their pet! Plus you've managed to combine two of your passions! Nice.

  • Thanks tracy! I really appreciate it coming from you!

  • This looks so fun. I'm going to have to try it sooner or later! =)

  • so gotta try that! thanks so much for the help :)

  • Amazing job. You inspire me.

I actually have a canvas, paint and everything so thanks soo much! I was wondering how to paint good. xD

  • Oh, this is a great opportunity to use my easel and paint Pixel! (And to use the one peice of canvas that I got with it.)

I'm going to see if I'm allowed to do this soon, and put up a video of me painting. Of course, I'll need to practice beforehand. I haven't painted in ages.
