for pictures just stick a picture in, use teh magic wand tool on the white box part, and erase everything but the picture so its a pic on a checkered background, then just follow the saving instructions and it should work

in gimp, open picture, create an alpha channel (transparency) layer -> Transparency-> Add Alpha Channel.

Then delete the parts of the picture you dont want and you'll notice the 'underneath' is transparent.
