I have a wuaker Lucy and a derbyan parakeet Ellie and Lucy knows how to walk up and down the stairs and tell me when shes on my shoulder when she needs to poop and ill take her to the washroom or have her pop in the garbage can. How did you "Sparx" to do that??
i have two quakers enna(girl)riffraff(boy)enna is very protective over me she chased my friend away and then she(enna)ran back to me and started laughing
How old is your Quaker? Younger birds tend to be more adventuresome and might wander more. Sparx is older and very bonded to me, so she always stays near me. She rarely even sits by herself on her playgym! She always flies to me whenever she is out of her cage.
i feel badd for the quaker it looks so obligated when doing his tricks because ive seen some other videos were the birds do a trick and their owners say yay such and such and the bird says something back and then get their treat
Regardless, the reinforcement is still there. Some birds/animals are motivated purely by verbal reinforcement (praise) and others are motivated purely by treats. My bird happens to only be motivated by treats. My praise does absolutely nothing as far as reinforcing the behavior; that is why I don't often give verbal praise when training my bird tricks.
well yea but its cool at least it listens , what do i have to do so my quaker an talk i just want to be prepared so when hes old enough to understand mine is still a baby
There is no guarantee that your Quaker will talk- It's completely dependent upon the individual bird. All you can do to encourage him to talk is to talk to him a lot. He understands now, too, though.. There is not a certain age that he will begin mimicking you. Parrots mimic the noises their flock mates make in the wild, which is why they mimic us in captivity; they begin learning as soon as they hatch.
I couldn't get Sparx's attention with ANYTHING besides a sunflower seed. What do you feed your Quaker regularly? I had to stop putting nuts & seed ball treats in her foraging toys a few weeks prior to beginning her training so that I could keep her attention.
I've also noticed that Sparx is SO antsy to get her treats that she barely cares what she is doing before she gets them.. Which makes training much harder because she doesn't know what she is getting rewarded for, sometimes. Good Luck!
Great. I have a cockatiel who has mastered quite a few tricks using clicker training! My quaker on the other hand has very short attention span! I still haven't found a treat that he loves enough. What are you using with Sparx? Quakers are so full of personality i just love them!!!
Yes, mine love to break them, too. But when you're training, you need something quick to give them. The bird will forget what they did to get the treat if you sit there are wait a minute for them to crack it open and it eat it. Plus, I only give them half of a sunflower for doing a trick.
Do i smell TALENT :)

COOL! I'll have to get one of those for my Quaker! She has a similar ball and she drops it between the loops of her bungee cord.

wow--smart bird! We have a Quaker but I've never tried to get him to do tricks. What treat are you giving him?
kirbyquilter 2 years ago 2
@kirbyquilter Thanks! :) I use unsalted/unroasted sunflower seeds that are shelled. (Giving in-shell seeds slows down training)

Smart bird. You have a lot of patience teaching him.

My quaker is 6 months old, and I have had my quaker for 2 months. How do you get to bond with them that well?

How do you get sparx to stay with you on the floor? when I put my quaker on the floor, it goes away from me, it's really small, and curious.

what kind of treat did you gave them
timmyphan 3 years ago
Unroasted, unsalted sunflower seeds. I buy them un-shelled, also, so I don't have to waste time breaking them all open
Shocktreat9 3 years ago
my quaker's favorite thing to do is break open the sunflower seeds, so I'd never buy them unshelled.
