when i was working as a flagger in provo utah for the union pacific railroad amtrak train 6 came through my crossing he had to stop and the conducter had to walk the crossing so the train was going slow so i got a good look at the 2 red private cars on the back one was a dome car
i'm seeing those engines in more places then youd think. I've seen them here in topeka, I"ve seen them with the 844, I've seen a few in kansas city, I've seen them dotting chicago, and I've seen them all over caifornia. These engines are not as rare as you think.
The first to locos RP20CD's are supposedly still in use at Roseville. Check out the greenrailnews web site and click Union Pacific (great data on these locos!).
Did anyone catch the Hi-Level Pacific Parlour Car with the Phase IVb color scheme at 2:47 in the video? Appears to be car #39972, the Napa Valley.
I can't seem to find any info online about the first 2 engines in the video...are they some new type of SD unit switchers? I think it's interesting that they have the windows painted over on them or covers on them or something...Very nice collection of shots! All thumbs up!!!
@AMTRAK155: MP15's are slightly longer than SW1500's. Also MP15's use Blomberg trucks, while SW1500's use Flexcoil trucks, as shown in the video, so the subtitle in my video is wrong!
that was very interesting I have not seen the SD40-2 gensets before and that private railcar on the back was the New York Central #3 we passed them just beyond Truckee we had a private car ourself that day on train #6 the Metis going to Oakland
That private car looked really ghetto with it coupled backwards. "The point an observation deck is to be able to look out the back, not stare at a diaphragm all day!"
Maybe you can help me. I live in Truckee and I was going to watch the Amtrak #6 today, but instead an Amtrak train consisting entirely of those private cars. Do you know what that is?
The passenger car between the locomotives and the baggage car is a Amfleet2 passenger car

The RP20CD's are still at Roseville Yard and I believe assigned there for now.

@DJGENEX71: They are Railpower RP20CD's, and I've only seen them at Roseville. Not sure if they are still used there.

@cchan006 If it helps, My friend has seen an RP20CD in Texas
shadowknight227 9 months ago
@DJGENEX71 Actually they're remote control units. They're next general EMD units for Union Pacific.

Whats an amfleet car?
dangerjp 2 years ago
First car behind the P42DC on the 2nd Amtrak train in the video. It's used regularly on the East Coast, like on the Northeast Corridor.

SD40-2 gensets? What are you guys smoking? It's either an SD40-2, or genset unit.
iceman977th 2 years ago
Not true, they actually are rebuilt SD40-2's that UP sent to Railpower to get converted to gensets, so you are wrong.

do the private cars slow down the speed of the amtrak traines and also they a variety of different passenger cars which i find odd, good video ty
currawongee 2 years ago
Usually not, unless the owner specifies what the cars top speed is. Then they respect that speed.
spiritomb 2 years ago
We took the Coast Starlight from LA to Seattle over Easter. There were two private cars attached at least part of the way.
What a fun way to travel. I have no idea what the cost per mile is, or what it takes to maintain the cars, but if I had the money I'd do it!

It was facing normal direction on its way to Reno/Sparks. I guess they never wyed it returning home to San jose. Or the owner was selfish about it.

Thanks. Yes, it is an ex-SP SW1500. I'll try to edit the video...
cchan006 3 years ago
no problem just pointing it out! are the first set of switchers Sd40-2 rebuilds?
Tjsingle14 3 years ago
It's possible. The trucks, at least, look almost identical to those used on the SD40-2's.
