  • Yes,dear Joan had a very acute(and sometimes ribald) sense of humour.

Sadly we only got to see it in Daughter of the Regiment, and (much later) The Merry Widow.

I agree with intelegentable,I wish she had done more comic roles.

  • Dame Joan was very effective as an actress in Traviata, and Lucia, and She gave honest natural portrayals, and never ladled the drama on heavy like Scotto or Dessay but her reactions and emotions were honest, real. it is a pity she did not do more comic operas as she had a real knack for comedy.

  • SueAnn, are you a dude?

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

  • Oh my God! Her australian accent in french is just dreadful... but it's so cute...

And what a voice... She's the one... Nobody was like her...

  • LOL, what a silly production! I love it.

  • @franimalistic

    Hello there,

I think(?) this might be from a TV series that Joan did called "Who's afraid of Opera?".

Which would explain the very strange sets etc.

  • Felicity Lott es maravillosa!!!

  • Teresa Berganza has the best versions of this aria. Specially in the concert in benefit Polio investigation.

  • I was zapping in youtube a while, and I can't find any better version of this aria than this.

  • She is fantastic.

  • this is the first time Joan Sutherland made me think of Julia Child! It's great to hear Sutherland is such fine form, though -- as BiancaRose78 says, it's nice to be reminded of what a good comedian she was.

  • What the fuck is this?

  • @amidoingthis siht

  • Does it exist the complete video recording??

  • she is not the greatest singer of all time, nor is callas, nor is nilsson nor is caballe, nor pons, nor ponselle, nor milanov, nor sills, nor price, nor horne, nor melba, nor patti, nor tetrazzini, nor lehmann, nor freni, nor tebaldi, nor, all the other incredilbe sopranos and mezzo sopranos of the last two centuries, they are all the greatest singers ever!

  • I saw her first LUCIA ....in San Francisoco. Luckily her wife didn't conduct. We were saved THAT!!!

  • Her wife?

  • La Périchole = la perricholi = la perra chola (en español)

  • "on s'est tanné! on s'est tanné!" LOL

  • great acting xD

  • SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A pity that they cut the can-can sequence from an Offenbach finale! Can it be they thought it too "risky" for children?!

  • I'm sure they could adapt anything. they even use puppets.

  • Heheh. Love it.

  • is that monty python's flying circus? :D

  • Comment removed

  • i agree:D i wish i had such a strong jaw:D

  • well ... now that you mention it ....

  • go dig a hole and die in it. she is the greatest singer of all time, show some respect.

  • how can you say that when the analysis of being good singer is all based on opinion? NO doubt she is great, but she definitely isn't my favorite. I prefer Beverly Sills even though her performances were flawed.

  • Dame Joan is a great comedienne!

  • So true! Too bad she didn't get to do more comedy, but it's understandable with that voice.

  • our dear aunty Joanie

  • Great!

  • and she NEVER drank!! maybe it's better to watch others get drunk and then mimic!! Fantastic artist.

  • I only believe in heaven when I listen to her voice... Goodness, what a throat!

  • I always loved La Perichole as I was apart of a college production as Virginella. Dame Joan was great in the scene. One question, what's up with the puppets?

  • It was a programme done for children!

  • Called "Who's Afraid of Opera?"

There's part of her episode about Lucia on here somewhere ... definitely check it out, I was about dying laughing in some parts.

  • couldn't find it - where exactly? Thanks

  • Wow! No kidding! She's an awesome comedian! I didn't know that about her. Thank you.

  • @BiancaRose78 Whoever said she couldn't act!?

  • @eugenelohks She had her strengths in some roles...

  • @eugenelohks I don't know, but if anyone has said that, they haven't seen this video! :0)

  • Funny! But my favourite Périchole is Elisabeth Söderström. I saw her live in this operetta in Stockholm in the 70-ies. And the king of Peru was played/sung by Swedish comedian Hasse Alfredsson! (it would be like putting John Cleese in the part.)

  • This is funny and Joan sings beautifully.

  • indeed the granny looks funny in that role

  • she's a great comedian!
