  • It's not Tim, Brian is singing in most of the song.

  • tim stafells voice in this song is outstanding

  • Look! Look! At 1:36! In the top right hand corner! Brian is sooooooooooooooooooo cute! He kind of looks like a 9th grader that goes to my school! Oh, my god! He was even cute back then, too! But eventually over time, his hair went curly. . . Any way, HE'S STILL HOT! And he always will be, even at age: 64!

  • @amanda2109114 That was from band called 1984. Tim was in that band also. Tho' Brian was like 18 I think by the time.

  • It's not bad....

  • does anyone notice how THE smile for the band Smile and that tongue logo for the Rolling Stones are really alike? well, the stones were first...

  • Tim! You have a gifted voice. Congratulations. =)

  • Oh, and lol @ Brian May with short hair! He looks better with long hair, but he's so innocent and cute with his hair short! xD

  • Freddie was a huge fan of Smile, and it's easy to see why, they were awesome! Tim Staffell actually has an amazing voice, and I think he deserved to be in a big name band himself. I agree with all the people who have said Roger and Brian should have called Tim up and asked him to sing for them again. Either as Queen + Tim Staffell, or reverting back to calling themselves Smile. Nothing against Paul Rogers, but this is the type of voice that is needed to do Queen songs justice.

  • Its not bad just not like amazing more of radio type music u wouldnt turn it off but u dont go out of ur way to listen to it

  • Smile almost sounds like fleedwood macish beatles. i think.

  • smile was a great group but im so happy that freddie mercury appear

  • si pero freddy es otra voz es mejor

  • i think tim is my new favorite singer

  • awe they were so young :( i wish they were still that young :(

  • I love that sg guitar tim's holding lol

  • Yeah, where can I hear more Smile?

  • awesome up

  • Tim Staffel has a good unique voice...but I am SOOOOOO happy that Roger and Brian found Freddie and then John!!

  • @sara1893 - Actually it was Tim who found Freddy. Tim & Freddy became friends while students at Ealing Art College. Brian and Roger were students at Imperial College. Tim, Brian, & Roger were in Smile. All 4 were flatmates.

Freddy & Roger had a used clothing stall at the Kensington Market. After Smile broke up, they remained friends. Roger & Brian were ready to give up music and pursue their professional careers, but it was Freddy who pushed them back into music. The rest is history:)

  • Tim Staffell sounds awesome

  • smile deberia reunirse y dar un concierto...

  • love Staffell's voice, also the oddity of the songs produced by Smile, they were a good band and hard it's hard as hell to find their albums.

  • i like it verry musch =) but it´s not so good as queen.

  • I like it verry musch :) but it´s not so good as queen.

  • smile fue una banda excelente.por algo freddie era fanático de ella! los "chicos"estaban muy inspirados, creo que influyó la época en que se formaron, había mucha música de alto vuelo en ese entonces

  • there is an album called pre ordenained credited to queen with all musics of smile

  • i love Tims voice, shame he didnt make it big with another band!

  • @bluephoenixone But he ended up desighning the trains in a particular children's television series.

  • def a zombies influence here

  • dang 0:56 hits a nice solid high note

  • On the picture in 1:30 Tim is the first one from the left.

  • AWESOME PIC'S !!! Where can I download that pics?

  • Tim had such a GREAT voice... i have to admit that...

  • O hope I don't disappoint anyone but this is Tim Stuffell on lead vocals, he did have an amazing voice just a little worse than that of Freddy, but unfortunately went into almost oblivion.

  • Comment removed

  • Don't say rubbish! The band in 1:30 is called ,,1984" ! A ,,1984" bass player was Dave Dilloway, not Tim Staffel... Tim Staffel was a lead vocalist in ,,1984". On the picture in 1:30 Tim is the first one from the left!

  • What cute lads at 1:28

  • Oh my dear, what a voice ! Really one of the best voices ever in rock music. His medium range is powerful with a smooth nuance, and his high notes are purely incredible. And so natural.

  • Yes I think he has a swell voice. Later one of their fans became their singer, they hired a new bass player and the rest is history.....................

    :o)#

  • He's pretty good

  • Freaken A

  • ive never heard tim staffel b4.....shame on me lol.......and he was awesome...........but freddie is something else ....i think you have to agree that..............and i think id like to see tim sing with queen now instead of paul rodgers

  • i WISH Tim instead of Paul

  • @larrylurex69 omg i never thought of that. Yes! Thats a great idea why the heck didnt they do that!? Paul Rodgers sucks, nothing like freddie, whereas at least Tim has the melodic smooth tone and high pitch that freddie encapsulated with his vocals

  • @larrylurex69 look for Morgan, the band he sang with after Smile. Even better!

  • ok. Freddie was not a baritone that is just bullshit. If he was a baritone he wouldn't have delivered nearly all of his songs in the tenor range bcause that's how you classify vocal range. The most powerful and comfortable part of the voice. This isn't fucking choral class anyways. This is rock music. you force your voice up to w/e note you wanna hit =P.

  • right, im getting a bag of weed and listening to this, this is quality

  • omfg this guy's voice is fuckin better than freddie's lol. It's extremely badass. But then again it's his song so it's probably molded to his vocal chords in a way you know.

  • Search for the band Morgan's first album, "Nova Solis", which was released in 1972. Tim Staffell sings on this album, and he delivers a F***KINGUNBELIEVABLE performance. One of my favourite albums.

  • paste to 2 other videos then go to your channel and see your comment JUST DO IT IT'S SCARY!!

  • What do you know, Brian and Roger started together and now they are by themselves again, i hope they have Queen + Tim Staffel

  • Dave, you're a hardcore Queen fan, i admire that!!

I think Tim should have been Queen's rhytmn guitarist, although he was a bassist, i could not imagine Queen, ever without any of its original members

  • i love the song, but WHERE THE HECK DID YOU FIND THOSE PHOTOS??? THEY ARE SO AMAZING! Man, Roger and Brian look sooooo young and innocent... and hot! I LOVE IT!!!!

  • I love Brian's songs

  • before queen.....

  • wow, just wow!!!!!!!!

  • I think Smile would have made the big time if they hadn't kicked out Tim, there were far less talented bands out at the time who made it big! . Freddie was an exceptional tallent who added a new dimension to Queen, but listening to the early recordings and amazing vocal range of Tim, can you honestly say that he didn't deserve stardome? Agree with the comment that when Qeen looked for a find a singer to fill in they should have gone back to their routs! Perhaps even renamed themselves Smile.

  • they didn't kick out Tim, he went of to persue a career in something else i think.

  • yeah he went to a band called humpy bong

  • I'd definitely rather see Staffel reunited with Roger and Brian, instead of Paul Rodgers.

  • Amazing melody. I really dig this song. Great great one.

  • This is probaly one of my favorite songs ever.

  • I don't care who sings it

    ITS A GOOD SONG

  • wow, Tim Staffell sings pretty similarly to Freddie Mercury!

  • If you can, listen to Morgan Fisher's band (MORGAN)'s first album, called "Nova Solis", recorded in 1972 with Tim Staffell on vocals. It's AMAZING. In 1982 Morgan Fisher became Queen's support musician.

  • Reminds me of Brian too.

  • this video was good

    lets chat O3

  • I think Tim is singing the whole song..

But, it really sounds like Brian at the beginning, that's for sure

  • And I'm guessing Tim comes in at about 2:08

  • Nope, that's Tim's voice at least starting at 0:53

Not sure if that's Brian though

  • BTW is the first verse sung by Bri?

  • I like this version better.

Freddie is a better singer no two ways about it but I like the way Tim Staffell sings this.

Freddie sings in an interesting manner, all in a high pitch/falsetto.

Roger and Bri should call up Tim to come sing for them, that would be nice

  • That would be nice, and he could sing with Paul Rodgers too, that way.

Their voices would match really well :3

  • I like the Queen-version too, but in some way this is a bit better...

Even though my favourite singer ever is Freddie Mercury (a.k.a. Larry Lurex ect.)

  • I guess Tim's voice is better suited for it. Freddie might have sounded better doing it at a little bit later year maybe with proper equipment ;) Either way this version will always be my favorite version

  • Especially on this song Tim's voice is so amazing!!!

But even as I prefer this version to the version sung by Freddie, no man on the planet Earth can match the magical voice of Freddie Mercury! He's sung so many good songs that these few gems by Smile (I like them all by the way) just can't compare.

And by that I mean mainly the original Queen songs. Since usually the original singer suits better. But "I can hear music" is better sung by Freddie (even not with the best equipment!) xp

  • I agree with I Can Hear Music, I prefer Freddie over the Beach Boys :P

  • I like that little acoustic part ;)

and the vocals are awesome at 3:21

  • so so niceeeeeeeeeee !!!!

  • Smile doesn't have any bad songs. So awesome.

Personally I would rather have Tim Staffell with Queen under the name Smile than Queen+Paul Rodgers, mainly because I like Staffell's voice more and because then they would have a bassist as well.

  • i agree with u 500% ;)

  • I was watching this video and when it was done I was like.. 'WOW.. mom could you believe that song?" and she was like "no, who did it?" I was like "Smile.. aka Brian May Roger Taylor and Tim Staffel in like 1969." and she was like "are you serious??! I thought that was a new song."

I adore this song.. adore it.

  • Dont fight each other.. what an incredible and lovely song.. VIVA QUEEN, even SMILE

  • I almost cannot recognise Brian with that haircut!

  • lol

  • Same! Hard to tell.

  • I freaking love this song...

    This version especially...

Tim Staffell's voice is crazy...in the low range he sounds like Brian and in the High he sounds like Freddie (though he's better at the high than Freddie was)

  • Better than freddie at the highs? don't think so.

The March of The Black Queen, My Fairy King, Nevermore. Listen

Anyway this is an excelent song, love it.

  • All of those were either Taylor...or Freddie doing Fallsetto which doesn't really count...

Staffell could sing Polar Bear and Doin' Alright full voiced while Freddie could not (though Freddie was amazingly talented)

  • What is doing Tim while singin "to see him as you see a star"? thats Fallsetto too...

And he loses control on the highs (Love her from where I lie)

Freddie's range was incredible, and that's one of the things that made him a great singer.

  • Actually no it's not it's certainly full voice...The whole song is! (Maybe not that scream in the last prechorus)

And yes he is a bit pitchy in bits but remember...

    1. they barely had any time to record this

    2. Freddie was actually pretty pitchy at times...(Seven Seas of Rhye, Sweet Lady are probably the most Jarring for me)

Stafell definitely has a much larger full voice range than Freddie did...

  • I'm not saying that Freddie wasn't amazing. He was an incredibly emotive and powerful singer. Stafell just has a bigger range. (without fallsetto.)

Now for an ENORMOUS range how about Roger Taylor!! Roger and Brian are such underrated singers. (Especially Brian)

  • They're both amazing. Roger's screams in Lap of The Gods and all of his songs.

Brian could put more power into his voice, but for slow songs he's totally great =D

  • Actually Freddie was a baritone, which is why he often used falsetto to sing high notes

  • His speaking voice was a barritone...

But his singing voice actually falls more into the tenor range.

Freddie certainly was great but Tim was just amazing at the high notes (Roger still is the best at those)

  • brilliant stuff.

rough and ready and a glimpse of what Queen were going to be like.

  • Love this song, and great pictures also!

Where do you keep getting this stuff!? :D

  • Why has this one been spammed?

    Theres nothing wrong with it!

In fact it's a very good comment, thank you very much :)

  • this is my fav song of smile after earth!!!

    rogie is so cute!

  • A great song! love it!

  • Finally old songs of Smile here! I'm surprised to see so many, but if it wasn't Queen, they weren't here, Im sure!

  • so fucking awesome

  • The Pic Of Tim At 00:48, Looks Weirdly Like Freddie :-)
