I saw the show in the first few weeks of its run. It was not a badmusical at all though the book dragged on a bit. The songs, sets, costumes and production values were wonderful ...and of course Angela Lansbury was brilliant as always. The mad women's trio of The Tea Party is a flawless piece of musical theater and if only for this number the show should be revived.
The lyrics are so deliciously horrible, the whole thing such a campy 1960s mess, yet somehow irresistable. Like an accident you can't pass by without looking.
Every moment of your life you are either attracting more of what you want, or more of what you don't want-- based on your thoughts & focus. Change your beliefs & you change your reality. Let the Law of attraction work for you-- And watch as your dreams become your reality.
there's a great show somewhere lurking inside, but the subject matter never was mainstream and it never will be...as for this song : no it isn't a masterpiece but it isn't so terrible either, certainly you can't blame the demise of the show on a song or two that were or were not misplaced...it's a good tune and if the lyrics get a bit reworked it can stay in the revival(if there ever is one) for all I'm concerned...but it DOES need a more intimate production, it isn't Mame or La Cage..
I have a feeling if it were to open today it would have done much better. I remember enjoying it ... although ... really! ... if you listen to these lyrics they're shocking.

Gorgeous music, beautiful singers, lush orchestrations... and terrible lyrics. Still I have a soft spot for this song and the show.

I love that section from 2:35 - 3:00 with the trumpets in the background.
The orchestrations by Phillip j. Lang are phenomenal and the entire recording sounds so beautiful. I'm so glad it didn't go unrecorded.

I can't believe it but this show was a flop despite a Jerry Herman score and the presence of the wonderful Angela Lansbury.

Not a TOTAL flop. Angela won a Tony for her performance.
