Jiu Jitsu is a non-striking sport, in it's competitive form and I'm pretty sure that's what he's teaching. Also, even if it weren't, I would think taking a couple punches to the face from a grounded oppenent would be worth it to transition to full mount
But when pushing his knee down and the guys arm is free, couldn't he get some free punches to the face in? It just seems like if I was on the ground with a half guard on me and the guy is trying to push my knee down to mount me I would would to use less energy trying to prevent him from mounting me and get some hits to the face in.
I'm not an expert or anything I'm just curious. Could you explain?
BJJ for combat and BJJ for training or tournament purposes are very different. He is not executing this pass with the idea that someone is throwing punches. That being said, this is a great pass that works rather well.
I tell you one thing for sure: if you shoot both of your arms under both of his arms you are going to be sweeped, cuz the guy will embrace both of your arms with his and will do an "Upa" for any side.
That's a great point. In fact, I recently taught a class where a smaller student had the EXACT same problem against a larger opponent with longer arms. I told him to do it again, but have his elbows pointed outward while he came underneath, the problem was solved and his opponent could no longer embace him.

during this process (after underhooking) it seems like it would fairly easy to slide your hips out, back in and obtain full guard.

OK, that way it might work! Thanks for explaining! Let me ask you just one more thing: are you from Brazil? I'm just curious!

No, I am not, but I do speak portuguese well.

yeah but if you stay real tight on him it would be harder for him to get the sweep. just depends on the guy I guess
